Does Aion bring anything NEW to the table?
They have the class based system with the tank / healer / DPS paradigm. There's levels to grind in a fantasy setting with some dungeons to explore. PvP is thrown into the mix. You can craft an item or ten. The UI looks very familiar. Their big selling point seems to be aerial combat.
What does it have to avoid that "been there, done that" feeling?

In my opinion absolutely nothing. Just my opinion mnind you. LOL! Wait for it, wait for it....they will come and you'll hear different...but the reality is - absolutely nothing.
The Baluar. NPC race that in the Abyss might help or hinder you at any given time.
Dungeons that require a controlled keep to activate (not really "new" but it isn't as common as to give everyone a "been there done that" feel for most).
While crafting isn't new, the ability to crit a craft and get something better is fairly new plus most crafted items become a requirement for the next one (eliminates the massive garbage crafts) which is good.
In short, not many things are groundbreakingly new, but they are reworked as to be "better".
Has any MMO brought anything new? Every MMO will basically be the same, its whether or not you enjoy the game or not

They don't bring anything new to the table but they took a lot of good things from other games and put it all in one. Also if a game had a new interface and new way to play you would hate it because you would have to find out how to use all of the new stuff why change something that has always been fine.
The NPC race does sound interesting depending on how it's done. They have to be smart enough and difficult enough to actually alter the course of a fight. Also I'm hoping it's more complicated then a bunch of mobs spawning near a PvP fight and them attacking the nearest player.

pretty much no.
That being said, people are excited about it because there hasnt been a very sucessful pvp focused MMO for several years. Also the fact that is has been released for several months aleviate concerns of a buggy and unfinished product, so people can judge the game based on gameplay, rather than bugs and stability.
WAR and AoC didnt resonate with alot of people so we all moved on to Aion with our dreams of RvR sucess. Aion doesnt need anything new to be a sucess, it just needs to do RvR, its main selling point, well, which WAR failed to imo.
If you really want to try something different, then may i suggest looking into one of the mmofps games, such as global agenda or possibly space mmos such as jumpgate or Star trek online. Although these have been done in mmo form before as well (EvE and Planetside), but they arent mainstream.

I agree, I hope the NPC race is a big challange. But we could always try to find a video of it from Kaion or Caion, in fact I might go do that now haha.
Thank you someone who knows what they are saying. I mean i have been looking at Aion stuff for the past year so i have seen mostly everything there is to see on it so before you say thing about it look up information.

That's new and exciting right?
Aion in my opinion, still needs some depth. It is polished, game play is smooth (accept when getting up from sitting down to combat is a bit slow), but that's it. Is the game a failure? Absolutely not. It'll be interesting to see where Aion goes and what it does. But if you're looking for something new and innovative, Aion is not. Arial PvPvE is interesting. I could live without the flight timer. However, the game is worth checking out while in beta and you can form your own opinion.

Ease to get into - WOW
Hard to master - EQ2
Art Style - L2
Char creation - SWG
Sense of community - EQ
So NO absolutely nothing new but what it does bring is the best from other MMO's refines it and polishes it and spits it out in one neat tidy package.
Throw in PVPVE which IMO has never been done well and the flight and theres some extra tidbits there.
Lots of players will jump into this game as it launch and will probably be able to enjoy the game right away instead of waiting for some more updates to fix things out...
But yeah, the game doesn't bring a whole lot of new things, but I think NCsoft managed to bring (almost) everything everyone loves about MMOs and put it in one package.
As of any other games, the best for you would be to give it a shot and see if it fits you. Until launch, it's still just speculations but you must admit that there's a lot of positive comments on these boards about this game from several different players...

Ummm...other mmo's. AoC, Eve online, etc. Aion gfx fail hard.

Good question.. But I think you can't really compare a game from another... Different art style can't be compared. Champions Online have that really cartoon feel, AoC went on a more realistic way on the visuals... It all comes down to what one individual like or not...
Graphics, in my opinion, should come after gameplay anyway... I prefer being able to do some massive pvp without framerate drops (WAR anyone ?).. All in all, I still think Aion's graphic look really nice.

Its not being launched with a 1,000 bugs to mess up the gameplay :-) I would say thats pretty new....especially with how recent mmos have launched ;-)

Cryptic made CoH, but ya the Character creation is one of the best to date
