Well, I've just finished my first month of Darkfall, and couldn't get my card quick enough to sign back up and get in. Personally I'm really enjoying it, but I am part of a very active clan, it's pretty big and we do a lot of raiding, village taking, sieging etc. On top of this I found my first large villa deed, and sold it for about 85k too, and have lots of money to do the stuff I want. We have our own hamlet now too, and I've taken part in more than a few sieges since beginning, so it's been pretty lairy. But, it's not for everyone. I'm just waiting for someone to flame my post now haha.
Ponico as an EVE player you will no doubt be well aware of the basic rule that if you don't want to lose something keep it in your bank. As with EVE you have unlimited storage (in practical terms), and the bank is linked everywhere (same bank), so keeping full sets of replacement gear in the bank for when you need them is common.
There are a lot of unsavoury players in Darkfall at the moment who will do things like offer to buy a high value item from you, meet you in a city (next to the bank and guard towers), start the trade to see that you have the item on you, then murder you. The towers will kill him (think CONCORD), but his friends will loot your corpse clean before you revive and make it back to the bank (the clan Shadow Pact on NA do this, although they use a neutral seller/buyer and then declare war on the victim). That level of savagery is a step up from EVE (and perhaps a step too far), but knowing that there are such people allows you to avoid problems - trust and reputation matters in this game (some people you should *never* trust), and you can do things like leave your clan to do high value transactions so that no-one can use the "I declare war on your clan to legitimately kill you" trick. Just re-join your clan once the business is done, or take a lot of friends.
In terms of clans, on NA1 things where I am playing seem to be in a great state of flux. Just working on your own and with people you meet may be a better option for now, until you can get a better picture of what different clans / alliances offer. What we really need on NA1 is a clan dedicated to protecting new players around the elf / human lands: outside your town's guardtower range, you are really on your own at the moment. That's both good and bad - I love the risk, but if we want Darkfall to thrive and keep on adding content (there is a lot missing atm) then we need to help new players actually survive their first weeks without any prospect of support, without having to join a clan before they know what that means.

Do you know FFA PvP does not exist in any real life society? Because without a little bit of safety or trust, nobody will produce anything more than immediate consumption. There will be no trade.
When designing a game, take this into account. Even as stupid as Diablo 1 was during the first battlenet days, they have full safety in the town. People trade in town knowing its safe, well until the townkill hack comes. That is when Diablo 1 goes under.
Full FFA PvP is not hard to implement, fact is, it is the easily, least responsible and least imaginative design. Praising a designer who did not even care to add "rules" to balance risk to rewards is sheer stupidity.
Yeah Flute, I've found it similar to EVE but in much less hardcore way. I got to say, I still think EVE is much much much more hardcore and less forgiving than Darkfall. It's perhaps more frustrating in Darkfall since people can really be annoying at times though but meh, it's internet lol. I do find it rather stupid for high end characters to go spend an entire night ganking a few hours old players but again... it's internet.
Right now, i'm ignoring combat a bit and just doing it to grind some cash when I need it but I'm concentrating on crafting. I am trying to be self sufficient (to a certain degree) and there's a huge market hole in certain needed items so I'm quickly trying to corner it while I still can.
So far, the community is extremely nice and I've been chatting with pretty much anyone. Many have helped me with tips and questions so that's also a big plus for me.
I've been ganked quite a few times but I've also been able to run away in several occassions. In EVE, I'm an interceptor pilot or a 250KM Navy Magathron Sniper. I'm used to know when it's time to run just by paying attention to my surroundings... interceptor = insta pop, sniper mega = MONTHS of grinding down the drain when killed....

What clan/alliance are you in?
