There are just too many factions in the present game (i.e., Argent-this, Argent-that, Argent-the other thing), that I think a consolidation of factions and reduction to a more reasonable and identifiable number would help.
I hope the new expansion (revision) works this in.

More factions = more reps to grind = more epics = more money for blizz.
then its just more easymode for noobs to get epics no thanks
Earning rep is easier than its ever been with the tabard system, any one who grinded for timbermaw rep way back will agree.
Rep needs to be in the game to award players and give them goals. Take that away or make it a trivial task then whats the point?
Faction Rep is the timesink Blizzard loves it not only keeps a player online and busy it also gives them a direction to work in .This however from my point of view as a casual gamer means I'm left with only a few hours a week to grind rep up through instance running and dailies (depending who you are grinding for). They won't change this system anytime soon if they make it easier then hardcore gamers which play a important part of the WoW makeup will complain that its too short & easy.
With Cataclysm coming and no new continent to explore, the area they will focus on is faction rep now I'm not going to be too cynical here but my two cents are they will make it longer and hard with juciy gear at the end of it ,probally better than what we can get now with WoW but still longer and more complicated. I agree with you on consolidation & reduction but from a marketing viewpoint this would be a disaster and cause more bigger problems as they have to rush out more content once people grinded up the rep & content.
Any case best area they can focus in regards to rep is the mission layout, If i worked for blizzard the one idea i think could really make faction rep fun is introducing scripted story lines and puzzles. Hell if i have to grind it I would want to see that some progress is been made other than seeing 15000/20000 [Insert Faction Rep here] everyday I log in.
The entire game of WoW was designed to be easymode for newbs, compared to it's competitors. It is why it is still the most popular MMO after nearly 5 years.
If you are truely not a noob yourself, you can always stay 1 step ahead of them. Blizzard always has a few things that only the hardest (most playtime) player can achieve. And you can still keep that E Peen BIG and HARD.
I think my point is not about grinding for epics, but just keeping track of all the frickin' factions. 30 to 40 factions is too many. They start to blend in or be confused with one another after awhile.
Maybe the answers is less factions, but with higher levels of faction achievement that can only be unlocked with expansions, etc...
Yes... because epics take considerable skill to achieve.... and not a huge amount of time due to a lack of real life commitments.
Oh wait.
Killing mobs 20 levels lower than you for hundreds of hours for 1 rep hit per mob is only hardmode for retards.
Reputations are just one choice for players to chose from as a means of advancing their character. They are completely optional and can be ignored if so desired.
I agree with the original poster that it would be nice to clean them up into smaller groups somehow or at least change the faction window to display the current factions based by level. 1-60 old world factions listed first, 61-70, BC factions listed first, 71+ wotlk factions listed first. The odds of a level 80 character needing to see factions from 1-70 before the current expansion levels is pretty slim in comparison.
The faction window does have some filting facilities, you can only show WOTLK factions for example and theres only about 6 of those from memory, so not sure what the fuss is about TBH.
no one could have said it better.. qft brother

Replace factions with quests, dailies, raids of various flavors, battlegrounds of various flavors, arenas, dungeons, events, crafting, vehicles, mounts, etc. More content, more options, more business. It is a pretty basic concept that seems to have worked so far.
In WOW, faction is mostly tied to being able to buy special items.
But what faction used to be in older MMO's (ex. EQ), was something that determined whether or not you could enter a town, buy from vendors, aggro or be protected (or maybe just ignored) by NPC guards. It was about being neutral and passing freely through towns, or choosing sides and gaining advantages in one place while being outlawed in another.
Balancing and working towards factions in this manner was meaningful and fun. I would like to see a return to this sort of thing. Of course, WOW is designed as a once-through amusement park, so factions can never mean that much, especially as your character quickly outgrows a certain area and moves on.
No.
Factions represent different stages of WoW. They partially represent what that expansion (or original WoW) was about. Factions are much like a history book of WoW.
I believe the OP was asking for factions from earlier parts of WoW to be rolled up into the latest factions rather than easier epics. I'm proud of my Brood of Nozdormu exalted rep. I spent many a night wiping on c'thun and c'thun trash and dont see why that should be removed just because some kid thinks there too many faction on his page when he hits U on his keyboard.
If you dont like theres so many factions put them on inactive.
Blizzard does not make you grind any rep from any previous stage of the game. You dont feel like doing the 20 clears of MC after you hit reverred with Hydraxian waterlords? (you get no rep from mobs after reverred, only bosses and its 1050 rep per clear for non humans). Then dont do it.
Other than getting reverred with Kirin Tor for the head enchant and exatled with the sons of hodir for shoulder what other rep are you forced to do in WotLK?
