So, I have been seeing an insane amount of hype for this game all over this forum for quite a while now. This game seems to already be a huge success in Asia and is gearing up for the same in the west. I looked at their website to see what all of the ruckus was about, but from looking at the site, everything about the game looked very, well, average to me.
So my question is, what is so great about this game? What sets it apart from everyone else, and why is it such a success?
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

It takes what is good about mmo's now and combines them all into something more than half decent.
Plus it's as close as a game is gonna get to DAoC's RvR system.
WAR failed at that due to instanced pvp.
Its working and doesnt seem to be a half finished beta.
Thats great, isnt it?
The reason why there's so much hype is because there is so little about the game to complain about. It certainly isn't buggy, it's well polished and from reports in China and Korea the end game works as intended and classes are fairly balanced. Many games come out unpolished and while that might be what you are used to, logging into a server on release day might feel like it has as many bugs as any MMO that has been out for 3+ years. There won't be any frutration from features not working as intended, or features missing on release that were listed on the game box.
The complaints for the game follow the pattern of things that Aion never intended to be. When you have a post on the Aion forums here where the OP complains the last level in the 1.0 version of Aion (44-45) takes 19 hours of gameplay to achieve you know that problems with this game are far and few between. The problem arises that this game doesn't differ from the rest, it's not unique enough.
The unique factor is really in many factors:
Tactical Flying RvR PvPvE combat.
Uses the acclaimed game engine used in Farcry (2005).
Awesome stability (Never crashes unless Gameguard issue).
Can be played on Medium end systems, don't need to spend more than $500 on a rig to play.
Ability to customize gear looks, not everyone will wear the same look at 50. After level 30 you can put a level 20 gear texture on a level 35 piece of gear if you'd like.
If you are puzzled why so many people are interested in Aion and that it is amazingly popular for a game coming to the West from Korea with no solid IP then try the Open Beta coming up this September.
k so i finish playing beta this night here is the problem abrahmmmm from the look's of it you like to play shooter games so you should stick to those for us other ppl we like the graphics way way better than wow and any other game so far i mean you know if you would of taken the time to play it during beta you would know what we are talking about :P
2 things:
1. Don't make assumptions
2. Punctuation is your friend
Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN
Haven't you already asked this question? Well a word in from a Pre-CU vet to another. Not much. It's like how alot of people like strawberry milkshakes, some more vanilla milkshakes, others like mango milkshakes. What happens when you mix a bunch of different milkshakes together and make it taste good? You get a well implemented milkshake that no mmo is quite like. But at the same time it's not vastly different either.
In my experience from playing 1-30 on CN, you will not be getting a SWG nastalgia or anything close. But this game does draw you to your character like SWG did. The crafting system is also very good. Not quite SWG. But they have very rare odds on crafting that may allow a item crafted to have better stats than any other around. Much like the rare percent of getting a huge bonus on the crafted stats in SWG.
Of course gfx are obvious. The game while very specific in taste. Are very well done. Also, everything is in place for strong tight knit communities on servers. I plan to play this and enjoy the hell out of it, for what it is. Then when SWG"No such emutlation" is complete, I plan to play both maybe. I can tell you 1 thing though. The PVP mechanics in this game kill SWG's, Pre-CU's. Then again that isn't very hard. That was my only gripe I ever had with SWG was when I switched from commando to TK.
When I finally got TKM, the ONLY WAY to fight people would be STUN, KD, HEAD HIT, HEAD HIT, HEAD HIT, rinse repeat. If you where fighting a rifleman or swordsman, all the fights ever where was spamming 1 move constantly on and on and on because it was POINTLESS to target action or health. I wish I could see a complete pre-CU balance where alot of the higher tier'd skills got put into a effective use. But this is one strong point of aion. Just about every skill you have is neccesary for something.
I recomend if you do not want to take any risks at all whatsoever. Then stay far FAR away from aion. If I where you i'd just stick to single player games/online shooters/rpg's untill SWG"What emulation?" comes out. Though I half to commend aion, it was vastly fun enough for me to pre-order it. Something that i've never done for a MMORPG>
Unlike practically every other mmo released in the past 5 years, Aion is ready for release.
It's an enjoyable EQ style game with a few nice touches - really detailed character customisation at creation and you can transfer stats between gear, i.e. if you get some uber gear but don't like the look of it, you can transfer those uber stats to other gear you do like.

Why wouldn't it be ready for release? I mean, hasn't it been released over a year ago?
I liked the milkshake analogy because thats basically what Aion is.
In itself it brings absolutely nothing new to the table. What it does do however is bring the best of many other mmo's refines those systems and polishes them up into a neat tidy bug free package.
What really holds me though being a SWG vet also is the character customiation I know I am not not identical to 10million other people so I personalise to my character more the char creator is second to none and then throw in the many forms of stat customisation of our base template/class then you truly can be unique.
I was also a great fan of DAOC RVR and thought WAR got it horribly wrong with random keeps dotted around that offered nothing of any real gain for holding and only 2 faction's. In respect of RVR Aion nails it by introducing the PVE faction the Balaur keeps etc also have a bearing on wether or not your faction can access certain content so are a must to keep although they lack the feel of you are truly defending your homeland that DAOC had they do offer enough incentive to make it a case of hell is always breaking loose in Atreia.

No not over a year ago, 10months. And even then, it was polished, and was ready for release.
Also, it's extremely easy to discard any game having a good launch by saying "why wouldn't it be ready for release". Had AoC or WAR been ready for release and were polished at launch, a lot of people would have said the same thing: "why wouldn't it be????" etc.
Don't take anything for granted.
For me really nothing. I don t find Aion to be the next great game at all. Will it have alot of subs sure, but to me I find it quite boring. Being my opinion, doesn t make it the right opinion for everyone of course. That said outside some time on the CN servers, the every pther weekend beta thing here actually made me cancel my pre order. It felt WAY to linear. For each their own but I got bored before release.
What makes it unique is that they made it READY to be sold, before actually trying to sell it, unlike it was with AoC and some more other recent games.
It's fun and POLISHED, not as much as blizzard games are after release, but close.

What makes Aion so great? Potiential.
Using the milk shake example.
I like milk shakes.
I haven't had a good milk shake that was made well and had a good after taste in awhile.
I will try Aion's milk shake.

Comparing War's combat failings to Wow, leading on to Aion
I was just discussing this with a friend. We said when we tried War one of the main reasons we couldn't stay was the combat mechanics would never let you excel yourself againts other players or mobs. It was a case of hit this skill hit that skill, movement and timing never really seemed to be apart of combat. For example a mage in wow can excel himself and theres a certain amount of skill compared to War, he can blink, slow the target, crowd control another target and maybe take out all three if the opponent is slow on countering. If you came against 2 ppl in War the outcome would almost always be the same. There just never seem to be enough tools at your finger tips to work with.
Aion has managed to give you the tools like wow but taked the next level your movements also change effects and stats. For example strafting will incrase dodge, backing away will add defense and take away attack power (giving a healer more time to help you). chasing a opponent will increase attack at the cost of defense. Then you got to deal with all this in flight which means a whole new level of challenge in pvp.
The more ways to buy, sell and trade the better
Aion not only has a Auction house equivalent or market place (where all places can put there gear or drops on to sell). You can also open a private shop in quest areas where shops might be miles away. I can tell you a few times i've found some nice gear from players and thier private shops, well needed at the time to boost my dps and down time between mobs. Also you can trade through mail boxes to your own characters and friends and ofc normal walking up to players nad trading. The lack of ways to trade in guild wars was one of the things that killed it for me.
Loads of customization
Lets face it not many players wants to look the same, Aion has a great character creation setup. Also loads of different armour and rewards throughout the game. If that wasn't enough theres craftable gear and also dyes so even if someone got the same chest piece as you you can change the colour. Theres also vendors that can change the design of your gear at a price a believe (correct me if am wrong). And ofc socketing. Another thing that was lacking alot in guild wars which killed it for me.
I could go on but i wanna go back into the beta. But yeah its just about improved everything that current mmos have right now and added its own style and features on top. Thats what makes Aion so great imo.
The ability that I can go "hack hack" with my sword and jump into the air and "swoosh" through the air with wings and also launch magic that goes "kabooom" but also if you want you can take out your bow and go "pew pew"
It just adds alot that you dont expect from this game, really have to try it to understand it.
Truth be told, Aion's Milkshake brings all the boys to the yard. Plain and simple.

ditto..
can't explain it but, it just felt same ol to me.
What makes it so great?
It's...fun? I...enjoy playing it?
I've never understood the logic of feeling the need to justify choices to perfect strangers on the internet. Hell, even my friends IRL. Not once has one of my friends come over to our home and said "Seriously, what makes your grill so great?". "Why should I buy a couch like yours?". "Give me 10 reasons why you think your TV is the best one you could have chosen." If they did, I'd think they were insane. Yet for some reason, this behavior is acceptable when hiding behind a keyboard.
It's just all very weird. I mean seriously, if how you spend your money and and what you enjoy can be so easily swayed by the rock-solid opinions of 'L337FaCe1985' on some random forum...save that money and buy a spine.

They really need to change the sounds though. My demon-looking tattoo'd Asassin just doesn't seem right sounding like Bruce Lee when he fights.
Katsma is Lithuanian for 'he who drinks used douche fluid'.
I've had a great time in the last two betas. What they have done isn't new, but what they have done they did RIGHT.
The game is a joy to play. Good story, fantabulous customization, good PVP, great PVE, excellent PvPvE.
Getting to Abyss is enough of a challenge to make it mean something. Depending on your class.
You will get there MUCH easier with certain classes than with others. Getting there with the tough classes means SO much more.
It's fun. Plain and simple.
I do agree that the body types in this game, although can be very customized, keep sharing the same feeling. But one must see that the game presents us 2 races, not 5 or 6, two, this is Aion. And inside this 2 races you can customize you avatar in the way you want and never find anyone the same as you.
Unlike practically every other mmo released in the past 5 years, Aion is ready for release.

Well done, you make his point quite nicely.
I think I see what you're trying to get at... but you're not quite there.
In wow you can blink or slow the target or crowd control... yes.
In war you can silence, disable, root, pull in, and all bunches of other crap. Many complained it was too much cc.
So from your example is not that great. Now if you want to complain and say the skills in WAR were a lot more brainless due to a TON of the cc being insta cast, that's a different story.

Describing WAR is really simple. All of you are overcomplicating the issue.
WAR sucks. See how easy that was?

I don't think I've asked this before.
Thanks for the insight about the game. While I do prefer sandbox gameplay like SWG, I'm open to anything that is a good game and is fun. At this point my complete boredom with the genre may push me to give this game a shot, although I'm not too keen about Game Guard.
