I mean... there's no chance they did this intentionally to put stress on the patch servers and test the patch process in general. Who do they think they are testing the F'ing game!?!
Well then I have even less repect for them. Most MMO's have some kind of beta and many people who plan on playing will just have a small update on the day of release. This makes it smoother for the people who load and fully patch the game on release day. This isn't 10 years ago, we are not waiting for the store to open on release day to get our copy of the game anymore.
Let me let you in on a little tip here: If you really are DL'ing 3+ GB of stuff, i would put good money on the guess that a majority of those are art/music/etc assets. All of those can be easily included or excluded from an MMO download and simlpy patched in (like you are seeing). Come launch day, anyone who DL's the full version of the game or installs via CD will likely not have to DL this same patch that you are currently crying about, as they will be included.
As well, the above stated is a theory of mine, not concrete fact. It does make sense to me, though, as open beta is generally for stress testing/working out last minute bugs. As much as you dont want it to be, open beta is still for testing and is not your free preview. If you treat it as such and expect things to work flawlessly, you need to begin a strict regiment of meds that alter your state of mind somewhere closer to reality.
This is my first beta (but not my first MMO - seen several launches over the years, good and bad) but so far am unimpressed with this situation. I hope they fix it otherwise I wont be able to experience the beta at all :-(
I am in the UK on a fairly slow connection (though average for the UK - 1500 - 2000 kbps). So far it hasn't stopped but at my current rate of progress, the patch will finish in 28 hours... and it doesn't look as though you can pause/resume patching between starting the client. Given that Cryptic are planning on shutting the servers every 22 hours (will that include the patch server?) I won't be able to play at all at this rate.
I didn't expect a smooth ride with the beta and was prepared for hefty patches / downtime as they stressed the system but they have implemented a patching methodology at the moment that has been poorly thought through and definitely offputting - I presume the live system will be similar to other mmos?. I was considering the lifetime subscription sub - but am not prepared to put that sort of money down until I have actually played it to get a flavour for the game.
I like cryptic (I was a great fan of COH) so I'm crossing my fingers that they will sort this out... but its such a shame that my first real expereince of Champions has been a letdown without even getting to play it.
I myself am very dissapointed, I had the pre-load and have been waiting patiently thinking, well, its a pre-load and I followed all the directions. Now I get shafted with this horridly slow updated of cryptics downloading a monster patch.
I prepaid for this partly because of the beta and early access, I just hope this isn't a sign of things to come.
Sry for double. I'm in the same boat as nicols(with the lifetime sub idea) big fan of CoH and cryptics overall work with it, and how it grew. I'm looking forward to this very much. The only difference is, I'm in america and my connection is crazy fast, yet, my download is still crazy slow.
It seems to be picking up pace the longer it goes, but, thats probobly just potential beta players dropping it . The speed just dropped again. This patcher is garbage.
It is telling me I have 3623 MB to patch... I got to 19.0mb and the server crashed now I am back to 12.0mb, wondering if I really want to beta this that much... not saying I won't play on release but I am playing a good character in Elder Scrolls Oblivion and this looks like it MAY be done sometime tomorrow when I won't be home. As far as patching it before now - it was locked and would not let me till this afternoon.
I mean... there's no chance they did this intentionally to put stress on the patch servers and test the patch process in general. Who do they think they are testing the F'ing game!?!

So what does this have to do with the fact that Fileplanet subscribers PRELOADED the client (which was LOCKED and could not be patched until a few hours ago ) and then today, have another 3.5 gig to download?
Sounds like you might want to check your meds and make sure you took them today... because your response had nothing to do with what you were replying to.

Believe it or not, you don't have to sit and stare at your screen. Go do something else--try downloading it overnight when it's likely to be less busy.
Was this the ideal situation? No. So are you going to sit there and cry about it or go on with your lives?

Repeating this like for hundredth time: Patch is not 3.6 GB big, do not worry. That is the overall size of game data to be modified by the compressed patch, that is significantly less in this case. Actual patch size for people from CB since Friday (Gold Master that is also hosted by Fileplanet) was 400 + 70 + 32 Megs Cryptic has made an huge error how they represent the data. It confuses a lot of people who can't read various numbers shown.
Wow, what an idiot. its a FRIGGING 3.6 GB PATCH. Yeah yeah, sure, 4 hours later, 17% done, but its compressed...NOT. Idiot, moron...or as my favorite Fred Flintstone alien would say, 'Dumb Dumb'.
I mean... there's no chance they did this intentionally to put stress on the patch servers and test the patch process in general. Who do they think they are testing the F'ing game!?!

Well if we can move past your personal attack on me and get back on to my point, which you seem to have missed. My point is that it seems to be a waste of resources to stress test your patch server, when there are many methods to limit the impact on the patch servers in this day and age. Ok so let's assume that they are stressing the patch severs. It doesn't look like they are working very well. Pretty sad considering this isn't the first game they have created, you would think they would have been better prepared.
Oh and I understand this is not a "preview", but open betas don't have much impact on the game, they are more of a marketing ploy to sell more units.
Believe it or not, you don't have to sit and stare at your screen. Go do something else--try downloading it overnight when it's likely to be less busy. Was this the ideal situation? No. So are you going to sit there and cry about it or go on with your lives?
uh, my problem isn't sitting there staring at my screen. It was that the damn thing keeps freezing or getting errors requiring me to start over. Doing something else won't help - it will just sit there stuck, which is why I gave up... it is 90+ degrees in my apartment and i have no patience with stuff like this when I am hot(can afford an air conditioner but not the bill to run it). I may try again but will probably wait until sept when my boxed version arrives in the mail. Have fun in the beta, those of you who actually do get in.
If it makes anyone feel better, after about 3% I noticed the patching speed increases dramatically. I went from 4% to 5% in under 4 minutes currently at 6% with the same speeds of 1% every 3-4 minutes. If epic fail occurs I will bbl to let you know.

I could ask you the same question. It's a screwed-up situation, and people are going to voice their opinions. That happens a lot on forums. Believe it or not, you don't have to read it. Go do something else.
So, are you going to sit there and cry about it, or go on with your life?
You guys are complaining because they are patching the game? You guys are a joke.
No matter what game it is your still going to get ppl complaining, it makes it worse that it's an OB for heavens sake, ppl complaining about free entry to a game, bloody ungrateful cretins.
Whether or not we should be sitting here complaining this is a bad omen for the game. We'll see how this patcher issues progresses the rest of the day. I imagine if Cryptic can't get this right then launch will be even worse. The concern is not so much that we can't play the game so much as what this says about the company running the show.
You guys are complaining because they are patching the game? You guys are a joke.
No, people are complaining because the patcher isn't working. This is a pretty fundamantal part of any online game and needs to work properly. Over four hours after starting the patcher the first time, I'm still sitting looking at the thing freezing every few MB's. If you could at least leave it running it wouldn't be so bad but you have to keep restarting the damn thing. I've had 905 MB to patch for the last two hours, it's not good.
It's not a disaster because we have to remember we are still in beta but they really really need to get this sort of fundamental stuff sorted out fast.
I bought the game at release and had a polished and fluid start. Others "needed" the early access at GOA, which didn´t ...work as intended. People even made signatures "Error 404, I was there".

Hah, well, at least you guys have your key. I am still waiting on mine. Hopefully I will get my key when they have the server fixed.
MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.
And Cryptic's response to all this is to take their website down for maintenance...this isn't a good time for site maintenance Cryptic!
