Ask a beta player!

I figured since so many of us are waiting for the game to finish all it's patching nonsense, we might want something to take our minds off of the wait. So my thought was, ask a beta player. Here we'll have a thread where you can ask questions about the game and those of us who've already had a chance either through closed beta or managed to get patched on open beta will try to answer them.

At least it's something to do, and we could learn some new things. For example, I only recently learned that power effects actually change when you rank them up. Every few levels you get advantage points which you can use to buy a higher rank version of a power you already have. When you get this rank up, not only will the power get better, but its graphic effects will increase, such as an energy shield getting bigger, or adding a glow effect around your body, or other things.

Anyone have any burning questions they'd like to ask?

    Here's my question...

As crazy as this may sound, I like to play MMOs not for the grouping, but mostly for that feeling of actually playing in a "live" world, where I can communicate with live people, and when I do have the time and inclination, group to get some big things done.  That's what I liked about EVE, and about LoTR.

As someone looking at this from a largely solo perspective, will I be able to do most/alot of things minus the group?

I would think so, but it would be harder I believe in some cases.

Primarily, if you plan to solo I think you'll have to gear your character toward soloing. For example, when I got to level 14ish, I had been playing with some of my friends and I was purely focused on DPSing, in offensive stance (bonus to damage, and I believe more damage taken) and everything. When I tried soloing, I got my butt handed to me quite quickly.

What you'll need to probably do is make sure you're in Balanced (no bonuses or weaknesses) or Defensive (bonus to defenses but I think less damage caused, more threat caused) stances. Also, you'll need a defensive power such as Regeneration or Invulnerable or Lightning Reflexes. These powers are passives but they can only be active when you're in Balanced or Defensive stances. They'll help you survive a good amount of damage. That being said, at some points there are quests where it says "Recommended 3 heroes" or stuff like that. So you can solo, but you will have to make sure you keep up your defenses as well as your other powers, and sometimes there will be tough missions that really do require you to pull in a friend.

Think of "stances" like the roles in other MMOs. Defensive = Tank, Offensive = DPS, Balanced = Hybrid, Support = Healer/Crowd Control. You can switch between stances pretty easily (touch of a button), but if you switch to Defensive and you don't have any defensive powers, you won't be as good as someone who does. Balanced presents a good middle of the road for everyone, but I was doing twice as much damage when in Offensive (if I remember correctly).

But short answer: Yes I believe you'll be able to do most of the missions and stuff while solo, if you're properly geared for it.
