I was wondering if SE will keep the the names of FFXI server on FFXIV. I personaly think that its a good idea to keep the same server names as in XI. Most people will choose the same server they played on XI in hopes of meeting friends they played with that they lost contact with. I know that I will because there are quite a few people I wouldn't mind talking to that I haven't heard from since I quit XI. SE might not keep the same names since its a new game, hence new game new server names. Let SE know what you want, keep the same server names or change them.

New ones. It's catered to a much broader playerbase anyway.

I say new ones as long as they are in FF context.
Edit: changed saw to say. >.<

I like swalkers idea. It would be nice for them to keep the same server names, for the exact reason he stated. There is no downside to keeping the same server names so I dont see what it would hurt.

They should name them after World of Warcraft zones.
They will probably keep the same names, but it doesn't matter either way to me as long as they are FF related.
NO!!!
One Fing server. the tech is out there. We dont need this crap of 100 servers droping to 20 and calling the game dead.

Well now there's a thought. What harm would it be for SE to attempt this? What would the pros and cons be?

My pros and cons
Cons
The world will be jammed packed.
There will be no camps to fight for xp(going on XI not sure how the new system will work)
Camping NMs and HNMs will be even harder.
Hard to farm items for gil, mining, harvesting, and any other gathering
Lag(depending on the equipment SE uses for a server)
One server = more noobs shouting stupid stuff in the city
One server = The cgf don't have to separate to different servers they can be jammed packed on one server.
Pros
Probably never have to wait long for a PT invite(unless you just plain ol suck at your class)
Can always find help to do that quest
Since we will probably be playing along side JP and the rest of the world like in XI one server won't work if they seperate servers by country/region it might work depending on huge the game world is. This is all I could come up with atm someone will probably ad more.
The technical aspects would be far to much to overcome. That is if your not willing to part with some serious cash for a monthly sub.
Its not that hard for EvE to pull it off for many different reason which I wont go into. But a fantasy type PvE game where players must rely on the enviroment just isnt feasible to have 1 server. Yet

Yes, the tech is probably there. They can probably dedicate several servers per zone to handle it. Distributed systems aren't anything new. And no it wouldn't cost any extra to SE to accommodate the same number of players.
The reason why they don't is: do you really want 1000 people in Valkurm Dunes? S-E can't just make some magically expanding zone that grows or contracts depending on how many people are online. Each zone, dungeon, city is built for a specific range of number of players. It's simply most practical to set a goal population per server (technically server group), and then make copies to handle all the players.
Edit: and as a side note, your understanding of server logistics is surprisingly poor. Why would you think SE would prepare five times the number of servers than necessary? They run a multi-national company; they're probably not retarded.
As for the OP I agree it's actually a pretty good idea to keep the same names in hopes that old friends might go to the same servers. But also remember that at first people couldn't choose servers in FFXI.

Heh yep, you can't make the zones large enough really. Well, you could, but it'd be weird.

I don't think SE will make that mistake again because later they added the feature to select your server on FFXI. It was confusing times though in the beging, My cousin and I calling each other try to find the other and find out we were on diferent servers.(Yup I was a mmorpg noob then) We can only wait and see what SE will do.

Why? Who says we all have to be in the same instance? For that matter there were Lots of Zones in FFXI. and I havent seen anything to make me think that it will be diffrent this time.
Just make everyone in a linkshell try and auto join the same instance.
The tech is there. It was just used stupidly in games like AOC and Tabula Rasa. As a single server option tho it would probably be accepted.
Heck, Champions Online is one server. and Ther is gana be way more going on there than here with flight and everything else.
So dont tell me it cant be done.

What? That was the greates part of FFXI. No single server was packed to the point of needing server transfers up ect. Hell more games need this at launch.

Odin just about always had free server transfers because it was so packed

The only reason Im worried is because of the Number of games of recent that have had this problem.
Not so mutch because of just SE. Plus the MMO world has changed ALOT since FFXI. Its verry posible to have a CrapTon of people buy and try the game for a month and quit because of their own stupidity in not looking at what the game is.
Proof? Potbs, AoC, War... ect ect.
One server instanced would solve this because it would all be invisable except for the number of instances avalible.

I'd go for new server names. It's a new game, new race names, so new server names would be commensurate. Meeting old friends from the same FFXI servers is good but a Shiva server in FFXI and a Shiva server in FFIV? This will remind me of how Vanadiel looked like and less immersed into Eorzea. This would make me have certain expectations for the FFXIV world. Maybe alongside the new server name can be the old one in FFXI in parentheses. But this makes it pretty confusing...
I detest an instanced world. I hated it in Guild Wars. I'm into feeling fully into the game world. If I alone zoned elsewhere I really wouldn't care that much, it would just look normal and everything. However if my friend zones and is in this specific instance, that means in order to meet up with him I'll have to look up that same instance name/number and choose it. This means that the world I'm playing on isn't a single world, but many dimensions on each zone hooked up together.
An instanced world would also mean at late game when a linkshell wishes to hunt an HNM, when it's not up in this instance, hell, lets hop to the other instance. I really don't like this. Also unless the AH is the same throughout all of the instances, if an item in this AH isn't available I'll have to go to the next instance to check it out. And should we also be able to do /sea and be able to view other players in other instances and be able to whisper them too? This would be fine. But if somebody shouts LFG here or is selling something that isn't on the AH, should players of other instances be able to perceive it? If they can, there will be major spam. If they can't, players would be locked into their own zone which also kills the purpose of having a single server.
Maybe a mix of the two would be good.
They could take the more populated servers (top 5 or something) only and keep those names while using the rest from the new content. It pretty much might be a logjam of vets on the older named ones while most new people would be just guessing which name sounded cooler or something.
Having both would give the vets who wanted to maintain their older communities a place to start without looking for their older friends, as they might naturally sign onto the familiar server names. (I was on Asura)

Oh god no,, not another instancing nightmre. We just had one it was called AoC. I personally hate instances. The main world and main end game content should not be instanced. For me instancing kills an MMO. Why play in a virtual world when you play in instances. If someone camping a mob in one instance switch to another, I am guilty of it, its bogus and BS. IMO FFXI got the instances right. their wasnt to much but enoiugh to where people were not always competing aginst each other.
Yes you could instance the piss out of a game and make it one server but thats not an MMO. MMo's are about dealing with other people not running from them to an instance where your alone.
Thanks again WoW for abusing instances now all these people think it should be the norm. I am sure GW has something to do with it too.
If you like instances fine we will just have to agree to disagree. no point in agruing further.
Edit: I am rather shocked at how many people care so much about a server freaking name. Its a name people. I do not understand what the downside to it is if they are the same as ffxi's. If a server NAME breaks the emersion for you pick a different server then. Thats not brain surgery. swalker brought up a great point about letting old friends try to re-unite on a server. What is the problem with that? Same server names would be the easiest way to do it. If you were a complete asshat and dont want any part of your old server where people might be that would know your MMO name, then pick a new server. The only thing I see here is jealousy from people who wouldnt want to be re-united with fellow gamers. If something as SIMPLE as a server name breaks the emersion for you youll never be emersed, just one OOC chat will kill any all emesion.
Serious blow to my faith in mankind here.
