How does it work?
How many items are there?
What items have game effects?

The beta had a cash shop on the menu, but it could not be used.
My first question would be "is this game fun?"
I don't think that the cash shop will be open until the game goes live as they will be wiping characters at the end of the Open Beta.
Or, how many Cryptic Bucks does it take to make this game fun?
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
So, the cash shop won't be open until AFTER the lifetime sub offer expires?
Think about that.

Frankly i'm surprised you havn't yet connected the cash shop to the man on the grassy knoll ...... *sigh*
Personally i think the main problem with this game has been the marketing team ..... personally i have em shot, they have left Cryptic open to some fairly obvious lines of attack and have done nothing to stop them before they started or even to counter them.
I honestly think the lifetime sub issue and the cash shop issue has been very badly dealt with, on top of that they have marketed the game in such a way that a lot of people are going to be very dissappointed with it. Not because it's a bad game, there just not going to find anything they expected.
The cash shop is THE most controversial aspect of the game. That people can't tell what it is like until after they decide on the lifetime sub concerns me.

No it won't be the most controversial aspect of the game, it's gonna get lost in the scrum over the next 2 weeks as other problems come to light. It's only gotten so much attention because there has been little else visible for people to complain about, that'll end now with the OB.
Guys seriously calm down about the cash shop, it's not that big a deal. Most MMOs have some sort of microtransaction or another. WoW you can pay to change your name, sex, server, faction, and race even. With WoW you can buy trading cards to get you ingame items like special mounts or pets. Let's all take a breath and say "Microtransactions are okay", now take another breath Ahhhhh, much better.
Okay, so here's how I believe it works. Obviously they haven't let us use the game store yet, but this is all gleaned from what I've been able to gather:
- The currency is called Cryptic Points, this may mean it's used for more than just Champions Online
- One Cryptic Point seems to be equal to about one dollar USD.
- For them to be realistic about people using the store, there needs to be lots of items, 20+ minimum if not 100+
- It will be full of things like action figures (mini pets) and costume parts and power replacers (things that make your powers look cooler in different ways)
- I'm pretty sure there will be packages (for example, buy the "ninja outfit" package and get a bunch of ninja costume pieces)
- The majority of the items will likely be cosmetic only
- Anything that will affect your gameplay WILL be available for free in the game somehow (through a quest or drop or whatever)
- Most, if not all preorder bonuses comes with 5 extra Cryptic Points so you'll have something to try it out with right away.
- The 5 from the preorder also mean if there's only 1 thing you reeeeally want from the store, you should have no problem getting it.
- I have a feeling a number of the things available in the store will also be available through the game's crafting system.
- This isn't a big deal, just learn to accept it, and you'll be fine.
Hope this helps

Isn't the cosmetic part a major feature for this kind of MMOs?
Or, how many Cryptic Bucks does it take to make this game fun?
LOL!
No, they're not.

"1) Microtransactions enable us to have a larger development team
2) Microtransactions are mostly aesthetic (costume pieces, pets, etc.)
3) If a microtransaction does have any sort of in game effect, then it can be also be earned in game."

in same thread some were asking to be able to buy levels.

This will be quick and dirty as i'm halfway through the washing up, my son is still awake and in 48 mins time i'm gonna be playing CO ;-)
PvP, will not be to many peoples tastes ..... i have not tried it in ANY deapth, but from what i have read (and we know how well we can trust forum posts) ... i get the impression that Cryptic decided that they couldn't launch without PvP but didn't want to devote too much dev time to so i get the impression that the current PvP format is a framework, which they will expand at a later date ... can anyone say Villains expansion?
Casuality ...... a lot is being said about this game being solo orientated, it's not it's aimed at casual gamers who have limited time and want a feel good gaming experince in their limited time span. Therefore missions FEEL short and easy ... but if your not watching what your doing you can end up at a respwan point very quickly.
No ingame community .... so the game will appear dead, especially since there is no global channel (Yay!) However this problem will only exsist until the players get organised, which because of the nature of the restricted access CB they were unable to do effectivly. The real problem with this is that to initial reviewers it will seem dead, come back in a couple of weeks or more and this game will be full of life.
Gotta go he's trying toi insert milk bottle in DVD
What was restricted in the closed Beta?
"" Voice acting isn't an RPG element....it's just a production value." - grumpymel2
access to server it wasn't up 24/7 and cash shop ... everything else was active

"Most of them will be for non-gameplay affecting items like costume additions, action figures, and the like. You can also spend money on things like renaming one of your characters. You can also purchase items that do affect gameplay but Cryptic adds, "Any micro-transaction that has a game effect can also be earned in the game through play."

Think about that.
They don't wanna show how the cash shop works until after people sub huh? Shennanigans. I'm gonna wait for the Marvel online game. Good things are worth waiting for, and I'm a patient man.
So all games which support microtransactions are bad? You shouldn't be able to pay to rename your character or swap servers or anything? Most games have microtransactions in some form or another. You can hate all you want but they're here to stay.

No pay to play game should have a cash shop which sells items which give a competitive advantage.
I oppose ANY out of game paid options as well, but they are tolerable. ALL services involved in the game should be covered by the subscription fee.
They are only here to stay IF customers accept them. If the vast majority of players say no, then those games will change or die.
I can certainly see why someone involved in the production or marketing of such games would defend the practice, but why would a player - unless he wanted an unfair advantage over other players?

There is a big difference between account services (server transfer, name changes etc.) and ingame RMT item malls (selling cosmetic items, exp boosters, powers etc.). I have the feeling that you don't understand the difference between the two, thus you assume it's the same thing.
