I am having trouble finding a a good budget graphics card. I came across a radeon 9600 and a geforce fx5700 and i dont know which one to get. Anyone have any suggestions?
Either card is good for a budget card, but personally I find a decent NVidia Card is more reliable ( from personal experience as a computer Tech, Radeon drivers are a pain at times). Look at an Albatron Fx5900 128Mb , they have come down considerably in cost. This may be a little more than a fx5700, but with the demise of AGP cards on its way with the birth of PCIeXpress, the 5900 or 6800 Nvidia cards are going to be the best in AGP that you can get. I hear the new 6600 are even better, but they aren't as good in an AGP card as a PCIX because of bandwidth restrictions. Both the 5900 and 6800 were made for agp, whereas the 6600 was made for PCIX but adapted to the AGP technology. I guess the best advice I can give is to go for a Decent manufacturer once decided on model, cheaper cards tend to be nasty. I find Albatron Cards reliable, and have a 3Yr warranty. That or Leadtek.
God luck, just do allot of research before you decide, most manufacturers have the specs of their cards online for you to check out. Try www.albatron.com.tw
Originally posted by MurtBijani I have a radeon, and I'm going to advise you not to get one. I don't know how the x800's are, but the regular ones (as far as 9800XT's) the drivers are horrible. My next card is going to be an Nvidia.
At the time those two cards were made they were both pretty equal. Newer cards like the 6800 GT and the X800XT show that Nvidia is indeed leading the the special olympics where every card is a winner to some people. The 6800GT is faster and sturdier than the x800xt and i will go out on a limb to say that it is a downright good card. Plus with Radeon cards, you have to deal with catalyst. Not my cup of tea.

Well performance wise the Radeon 9600,9700,9800 family is better than Geforces FX series(5200,5700,5900). However, I would take the 6800 series over the x800 series. But drivers wise, ATI is horrible, the drivers still cannot figure out which card I have.

but hey ya cant beat a free card right murt?
Go with Nvidia.
6600GT is cheap card but beats all other "cheap-o cards" that are in market right now...
I have an Ati Radeon 9800 pro and have had lots of good experience with it. I used to be an Nvidia fanboi, now I like both manufacturers.
I have had no problems with catalyst.
