I guess they wanted more of an action feel to the game. You know most people have the attention span of squirrels, so EVE immediately comes across as boring. Console players are even worse - they'd drop the game without even finishing the tutorial.

I'm interested to see how this turns out. How they're connecting it to EVE is very cool.

You are right about that, I doubt a Halo/GoW player would get past the opening credits of EvE Online.

I doubt anyone who's subscribed to WoW for more than 6months at a time could get through EVE's tutorial.

I don't get why people think consoles are -so- much more inferior for FPS games.  They are EASY to get the hang of, and the only reason they would be difficult for anyone is because those people just don't want to take the very small amount of time it takes to adapt.  I suppose the difference in skill levels is much higher though - those who are good at console FPS tend to be WAY better than those who aren't, where-as PC gamers tend to have a more even curve through skill levels.

Again.. console FPS games are NOT inferior.  So you don't have two dozen buttons at your fingertips - Big whoop.. the actual gameplay is virtually the same.  Aiming with a joystick is not more difficult than aiming with a mouse.  People are simply used to one or the other and have a -preference-.  That preference is just an excuse for why you're not good at one.

People often complain about lack of originalty or innovation, well kids, this is it.

Great idea by CCP.  First, a mmo fps for the consoles done right is a long time coming.  Second, the playerbase on consoles is infinitely higher than PC.  Third, it draws a whole knew audience to the Eve universe.  There are only so many aspiring pilots out there.  However bringing in the fps crowd is tapping a whole new audience.  Not to mention adding actual meaning to the combat as it has ramifications.

Really quite brilliant.  Now they just need the fps to not suck :P

This is fantastic news I've really enjoyed Eve's universe but always wish for something more fast paced with it. Its a real bummer that its console only and is a stand alone game (but somehow influences Eve). I was really hoping when I started reading this article that this game would be somehow integrated into Eve Online and have a more direct influence on the game.

Hope they realize that this isnt like EVE and the barren genre its in.. They have to actually compete against other titles this time round.

  • heartlessheartless Member UncommonPosts: 4,993

While this is a very cool idea, I hope that the game will be released for PC.

There needs to be a PC version of this, FPS's belong with a mouse and keybord and yes iv played FPS on consoles and iv finished them (halo 3 and modern warfare) and i still think that a gamepad for a FPS is a step down.

DUST-514 and EVE-Online will be connected into one single entity. This means, what occurs in EVE will affect Dust and vice versa. I am very sad to see this game being a console exclusive BUT at the same time, I can glimpse at the decision. Just hope a Titan doesn't DD near a planet lol.

It's not impossible but it's much harder to Wallhack and install third party softwares on console. On PC, sky is the limit and if you're smart enough, any FPS can be hacked to it's knees. Huxley, Planetside are prime examples.

Also, console ensures stability since every PS3 or Xbox are the same. On PC, you'll have someone trying to play this game with a 5 year old kit versus a kit of the year... not always the best experience.

Though, I'm glad that CCP is finaly bringing new games and with World of Darkness officially announce, I can only speculate that CCP is pretty much the ID Software of MMOs.

why is CCP not making a disembark option.... then it goes into a 1st person or 3rd person mode for ambualtion or the FPS mode? This would be alot better option.

I would like my WOD game please......

You say this as if any Eve player can hit the side of a barn. Stick with not (Click to move) flying, and not (auto Targeting box) aiming, you will be happier.

While I would rather have the FPS game be on the pc, this is a great idea.  Finally something a little different in this genre.

They'll have to accomplish a hell of a lot more to come close to ID, like create a best selling game for one.  Eve hardly even registers.  Lets not forget that most of the new subscruptions over the past few years are just the same people buying 2 or 3 accounts to level up alts and mules.

CCP would have to learn interface design and how to make an inutitve game to even be considered anything but a niche developer no one one really knows.  How many games sound good on paper or look good in a trailer?

oO where have you been? EvE is a game held in high regard by most MMO players in my experience wether you play it or not. The limiting factor for EvE is mainly the fact that it's Sci-Fi with a ship as an Avatar.  I don't play EvE and likely never will simply because I do not enjoy the Ship thing, I've tried it several times and tried to get into it simply because of the Games rep and the Devs rep. There not the end all be all company but CCP is high up on the list. Niche? Yes, but most MMO players know about EvE and CCP so..............

For all the people that whine for mouse and keyboard, did you ever heard that you can hookup a usb mouse and an usb keyboard to a 360? fascinating isn't it these usb thingys are fantastic  "sarcasm".

My problems with the console idea are:

    1) they are replaced fairly frequently, meaning a "new" version will have to come out for the PS4, XBox 720, etc.

    2) If it involves RTS's at all, console gamers tend to shun them.

    3) The game will be up against stiff competition from action oriented games, and well, Eve Online is fairly SLOW action wise. I know its a different game, but I can forsee a gamer with his clan waiting for an hour to be hired to fight on some sector on some planet... no instant action will be a REAL problem.

    4) Console gamers tend to be less-stick-to-it than PC gamers (especially Eve gamers). Will there be enough people playing Dust 514 to even matter a year after it's released?

  • MindTriggerMindTrigger Member Posts: 2,596

I can't get into it either.  CCP must have simply decided that their current EVE players do not matter when it comes to Dust.  The two types of gamers you are talking about here are completely different for the most part.  How many hardcore PC MMO  (EVE) players give a damn about playing console FPS games?  My 360 is something my kid plays with.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

I actually like this idea but i see it as a stepping stone toward consoles not just being a game machine but more like a standardized gaming platform the PS3 already has harddrive space where you can install on OS.  Could this be a shadow of what is to come with next gen consoles?  Standard hard drives and network connectivity and operating system such as windows along with your standard PS3 OS, USB which has been in consoles for a long time now and other standard "PC" type hardware and software in one package.  I would like to see consoles go more this direction giving you a choice between OS's and control types so you can play standard console games as well as install PC games on it having one box that functions as both would be awsome imo.

Because releasing game like EVE on consoles might not be as easy or successful as you might think.

The obvious restrictions are hardware restrictions. I don't know how big the EVE client is currently, but many Xbox 360 owners only have a small hard drive of 20gb. Having such an old game like EVE, which received many content updates over the years, be released on a system with such a small hard drive might be difficult.

Another obvious one is the fact that EVE was build for a keyboard & mouse setup. Sure you can use a keyboard on a console, but limiting the target audience to people who hook up keyboards, have a 60gb hard drive or more and be interested in paying a monthly fee (something which is very rare on consoles) seriously reduces the target audience.

Another reason is marketing conditions. Space ship flight games, or mmorpgs in general, aren't very popular on consoles. Having such a risky game like EVE go into a very untested market might backfire greatly. There are also patching/update issues. When you want to update something to EVE, CCP can just put it on their servers and there you go. On consoles, it doesn't quite work that way. The patches first have to go through a long certification period before Microsoft or Sony will allow the patch to go up.

First Person Shooter popularity on consoles is at an all time high, entering the market with an MMOFPS is probably the best way for now.
