I would seriously like to know. Other than the fact that you can pick your powers from different powersets... I'm seeing a lot of "CO is everything I wished CoX would be." And I don't see it.
Honestly, for me it's the combat. My friend and I just couldn't play CoX due to the 'ok, let me stand still while I do this move...even in midair' way that CoX handled.
I think the dialogue and storyline progression is much better. The mission/questing system doesnt become redundant, CoX mission system is the epitome of redundant. You start off the game and actually feel like a hero, not some wannabe hero. You also get a very nice travel power at level 5. Not to mention you can choose some nice costume pieces right off the bat like wings, capes etc.
The crafting system is also much better, and its not something placed in as an after thought. The PvP system is far beyond what CoX is, and before you mention that you can be a villian in CoX.. can you "really" be a villain? I mean, on the villain side you're doing almost the identicle quests as the heroes are. The mob models, the dialogue..everything is a near mirror image. And again, the PvP system is not something that was just slammed into the game after the fact. They developed the game with crafting and with PvP in mind.
As much as you see people posting about the graphics, I think the graphics as well as the art direction in Champions is far beyond what CoX is. Again, CoX becomes very redundant in its landscapes. Champions feels like an open world, with actual exploration possibilities. CoX just never did.
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
I completely disagree.. it does not feel like an open world it feels like I'm traveling from instance to instance... In CoH I could take the train to wherever.. I could help people and there was stuff to explore other than to just to missions.
I guess in my opinion I would have to say that CoH is better than CO at least in the beginning levels. I even like the creations system in CoH better and I like how the missions are set up ect.
What CO has going for it is the story I guess (and the crafting system)... though again it feels like I'm completing a story in an instant and then going on to the next one.
I do like the art style of CO though, but only at the highest level in which it looks great. Sadly it lags too much for me at that setting. I've decided to get Aion... but my play around with CO throughout the week.
This is my big question at the moment. I have been feeling the "Superhero genre" itch and am between returning to City of Heroes, or giving Champions a try. Everything I have seen and experienced in CO so far makes it seem little more than a slight CoX upgrade without some of the features that were added later. The characater creation is neat and does have more options than CoH, but none of the improvements just floor me, they are nice but not a game maker. P_lus there are several costume bits that CO doesn't have, like coats and skirts, etc. Maybe they come later, or can be found as loot. Having some power customization is nice, although CoH has and is making improvements to that.
Champions doesn't seem to have alternate costume slots that you can store like CoH either, which is a big bit of fun for me, but maybe that comes at a later time. I also wonder if the really neat costume bits will be part of the Micro Transactions.
One thing that concerns me is that there are no superherpo bases at this time. This was something that a lot of people wanted at launch in CoH but wasn't delivered until much later. Seems like history repeating itself when many of the team responsible for CoH in the first place don't put this in. But maybe it is part of the development plan after launch.
Plus that doesn't even get into the Mission Architect system in CoH, something that I have not tried but certainly appeals to me.
So what makes CO different and stand out? Prettier graphics and some improvements to the character creation system? replacing missions with quests? A friend of mine talked to Jack Emerit at GenCon, and that was his big selling point; that CO wasn't repeatitive like CoH. Maybe...but it has been my experience that all MMO's have a degree of repeatition.
So what is the big thing? Keep in mind that I'm not bashing the game by any means. I just am looking for a reason to choose this over CoH.
I would seriously like to know. Other than the fact that you can pick your powers from different powersets... I'm seeing a lot of "CO is everything I wished CoX would be." And I don't see it.
We could say that about a lot of MMOs. How is WoW different from EQ2? How is WAR different fro AoC?
If we break down MMOs, they are essentially the same. It is the minute differences and execution of those differences that make certain MMOs great and others mediocre.
CO and CoH are similar because they are the same genre. But I think you underestimate the ability to choose different powers from different powersets. The combat is a bit different especially with the addition of blocking. The graphics are superior but the art seems to divide folks. CO goes beyond one city. The missions, to me, feel more heroic.
Don't expect revolutionary changes. The question people who are truly interested in the game should be: Is it evolutionary enough for me to play? That question can't be answered by anyone but the specific individual since everyone has a different view of how much evolution a MMO should make.

ya CoX has been a little bit more developed on a few things, although out the gate the game is looking like a very good successor to CoX.
I just wanted to mention that there are jackets and skirts. Just not sure why you havnt found them. You sure you're using the pull-down menu at the top during character customization? Theres all sorts of jackets and skirts etc. Also Im pretty sure there currently is a way to have more than one costume and switch between them. I personally havnt done it, but Im almost certain Ive seen the option pop up by accident.
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
Yea... /shame I was coming here to say that I did find the other options. I definatly am pretty darn amazed at the character creation for the most part now
ya its not really the most intuitive thats for sure. Theres things like scarves placed under back items instead of neck items for instance, and its easy to miss capes. I just think they may have put too many sorting options and made finding certain things a little more difficult than it could have been.
*edit* you'll also notice some options not being available if you've selected something that may conflict with it previously. I hear some of the power armor selections remove the ability to select capes
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
My daughter plays COH regularly. I keep telling her enjoy it, because come November or so, it should empty out pretty quick as people realize this is really an evolution on COX.
Technically and just creatively. I really did feel like a super hero starting out of the box. Thats just beta.
COH didn't launch with near the bells and whistles this one does, so give it time.

I thought the same thing at first. But after playing CO, I have to say it is not the COH2 I thought it would be. While they kept the genera of COH, and some of the aspects that made it popular, they focused too much on 'active combat'. Considering both are made by Cryptic you would expect CO to be CoH2, because Cyrptic sold the IP to CoH. However like I said their focus on 'active combat' (which has been in a lot of new MMOs recentely, despite the general bad reviews about it), and in focusing on being active they removed many features.
Best part is people saying now they don't mash buttons...when the fact is you mash them even more. I did like the auto attack powers though. People won't be flocking to it from CoH in the end, even if at first CoH takes a dip in subs. I think they would have been better off expanding on their original CoH, rather then focus more on a button mashing high damage no defense game.
I suppose the people who think that the new combat system, being used more and more, will love it though. I personally can't stand it though.

That's pretty much it. Instead of "Go into this randomly-generated instance and kill the bad guys," it's "Go into this pre-generated instance and kill the bad guys. It's not as repetitive as CoH, but it's just as repetitive as any other quest-based MMORPG. Think of it as World of Championscraft
"Champions feels like an open world, with actual exploration possibilities"
I sure hope it gets better at higher levels becuse so far at lvl 7 all I have seen are two small zones.
Well, I guess you haven't been following the info about the game OR reading any of the NPC text.
Once you leave the tutorial you find yourself in either the desert crisis zone or the canada crisis zone. Once you complete the crisis the rest of the zone opens up to you. Until you have finished it, you are stuck in a very small area. Expect to finish it around lvl 9/10
That small area you are in is like 1/15th of the size of the zone that the crisis is in, if not smaller... And that is just 1 zone.
1. Open system that allows me to pick the powers I really want to build the hero I really want. This is HUGE. Much superior to the restricted class based system CoX had.
2. Character custimization is incredible at the start.
3. Cell shaded graphics is to my liking
4. Combat system seems a lot different
5. I believe we can drop quests/missions now. Cant recall when/if CoX ever added it
6. you can earn xp from pvp now
7. They at least included pvp at launch this time
8. you can respec out of powers more easily. In CoX, you did not come with respecs when I played. That sucked arse. We were forced to do a mission to earn a respec and it could be tough with wrong team composition. Really, really sucked
9. One server! Now you can play with anyone. Previously, in old CoX if you rolled on a small server like Liberty you might have hard time to find groups. Now we all on one server it should be much easier
10. Many more powerset combos is possible + more refined control over stats
Nuff said, way different. This thread has no point period
I wouldn't really compare this game to Aion... Aion was way more beautiful and thus pulls you in that much more. I can understand you saying that about CoX but not Aion.
Anyway... it's different than CoH of course but there are more similiarity between than two than WoW and any other "WoW clone" as people say. I remember liking CoH betters when it was released but alas. I will go play Aion anyway. Oh well.. maybe DC universe will be more to my liking.. I'd really like to play a superhero type of game.
And again, Champions Online is by no means a bad game. It's very good in fact. Just not to my liking.
Other than the combat, it just feels like an updated and enhanced version of CoX to me. If you liked CoX then you'll probably like CO. If not, well...then you probably won't like it. Oh, and if you don't like Guild Wars' instance system then you really won't like it because its very similar.
Is a man not entitled to the herp of his derp?
Remember, I live in a world where juggalos and yugioh players are real things.

The only thing it has in common w/ CoH is its superheros and you have the best costume & char customization of any MMO.
Combat is different, questing is different, teaming is different, raiding is different, PvP is different, new travel powers, completely different kind of crafting system, has stances, stat advancement, switchable builds, craftable functional items, etc..

Lets put it this way, CO power /class system is like a hydrogen bomb, cox was like a wwI conventional bomb, one destroys an house the other blows up your house and everyone else houses for as far as you can see and then agian.
Really, you cannot be more happy with a class system.
Missions are fast frequent, but still a bit shallow, they usually lead up two and 2 man (recomended) instance. But its rarely just kill x many of this, not sayign pick up x number or rescue x number are much beter but there is some verity. (I person liek geting attacked by flak cannosn and AA missles while flying around it feels better).
How combad works is also very different it much faster pace, you have energy to use move and moves that gian energy back so your contantly switchign between damage and charging modes (but if you have seem reco, or end you proably get a full bar of energy in 1-2 secs using your energy builders) Abilities themselves are often different how you upgrade them, how long you charge them, what abilitys you used before or after them etc.
