First of all - let me say this
I hope, so very much Fallen Earth will do good commercially (and not fail)
It is developed by true Indy company - dedicated and loving the project. Its both different , and very old school.
Almost a perfect MMO for core MMO player
If you would ask me to describe the game in few words:
I would probably say that the game feels the closest to Anarchy Online and its a first and foremost crafter oriented game.
But also I must say that claiming that FE has FPS combat, or advertising it as FPS game is not good.
While targeting is FPS like , combat (PVE) is almost as bland and boring as classic Everquest
Shame they didnt invest more in gameplay.
And having boringish gameplay, shame they didnt invest in strengths game does have.
And these being : Huge non instanced open space , factions, and crafting
First.
Being able to build a house , village , town - turn it into trading hub , or crafting hub.... this what this game should have been about. But its not
Second.
Huge non instanced world. This should be sandbox. Instead its quest based.
Third.
Factions system is perfect for open PVP. But developers decided against it.
Its hard not to play the game and not feel it took wrong turn on many points.
Still , with good community it could grow and flourish.
Question is will this community come to exist?
Its something we will see after the game release.
As for me.
I feel it could have been great game. But its not
Comments
Some good points
However its still new in the sence that it will be live soon and once a game is out there and the players start to get settled in the new ideas can flow and a game can be expanded on (so many people want it all now and im not aiming that at the poster)
Town building and housing can come later and while i dont think open pvp is the best idea the game has alot of open world to create some big open pvp zones for those who need that fix.
I think its better to let a game grow because its easy to see how these things handle in game with a settled community rather than throw in loads of stuff that might be wanted, liked and hated by the masses
Like you I hope this game makes it and it has a steady flow of subs to help it grow...
It dosnt deserve to fail
One of the basic strategies for sound game developing is not to push all the features in for launch, but insteat to gradually insert them via updates / patches / expansions.
As I too was overly-hyped for the game, closed beta was a harsh disapointment. I soon gave up on ranged weapons as the aiming was awful. Melee was ok as long as you picked the right opponents. Switching weapons is still messy if you're using Ctrl+mousewheel.
My hopes are nevertheless high for this game. Community in closed beta was awesome and the game has huge potential if developers will still be open to suggestions.
Better to be crazy, provided you know what sane is...
/Agreed
With the weapon change I just re-mapped to my num pad keys and changed my auto run key to the End or Home key as not to disable them by accident.
Great potential here hence I will show my support and buy and sub for the game because without it thay will have no funds to expand/patch. I just hope that the people who do like it do the same and not as they say let it cook for another year.
Im trying not to get too into the arguments from the people who want it all right now because it will just generate bad threads.
I cant stand to see people flame somthing just because they dont like this and that feature within the game so i thank you for giving constructive thoughts instead of "This game will fail because its not the game I played 6 months ago wich was way better than this"
I too played in closed beta & im still here in open the community is great and I never had to wait long for replys in chat for help and advise
Still I feel the game deserved to be open PVP
I am really not PVP player,
but game setting just asks for open PVP. I mean postapocalyptic , survival of the fittest , mad max ...
And ganking would be easily prevented by strictly penalizing killing of allied factions, and making town NPC guards and patrols on lookout for foreign factions.
The game as it is now. Is somewhere between.
Its sandbox but not really sandbox
its pvp but not really pvp.
I know it was deliberate decision , in order to make game more appealing.
But you can not make niche game more appealing.
You can either make vanilla game like LOTRO , AION (but you gonna lose to 9 ton gorilla)
or you you aim for your niche 100% like EVE .. and than work your way from there
Agreed on the eve thing and faction wars and open pvp in certain areas like eve's high sec ond low sec space that way pvp player have an area to pvp in and other players dont get aggro they dont want or deserve
I enjoyed eve's corporation wars but 100% pvp anywere in a game like this would put off the none pvp customers
eve did a good job of this maybe it can 1 day be implamented here too
Ive played also close beta and quit rather fast as OP said these flawes he mentioned are true and make me stop playing plus quest are very simple and game is far to easy and take you by the hand this is a themepark for casuals, so not for me im affraid pitty it took indeed the wrong turn:(
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
thanks for the update OP, i thought FE's original idea was to have all these mentioned elements in the game... without them it's just another crappy PvE fest with quasi FPS combat, well i wont be wasting my time with it anyways, i can cross it out from my list now, thanks
Its not by a long shot a sandbox its far more closer to a themepark.

First, I like the game as far as the foundations it has down. I believe that Icarus will continue to build and expand upon in a direction I will enjoy. Housing is coming after launch (no date but it has been addressed as a priority). I see no reason they can't/won't add EvE 0.0 space equivalent Sectors later on. I understand some people want it now now now and can't wait, but I am willing to wait.
As for the highlighted text above, you won't be able to judge an answer to that question from these forums. The official forums are active. The in game New Player channels is overly positive. There is some criticism, yes, but it is constructive in nature for the majority and not constant bashing.
That said, if Icarus continues doing what they are doing, FE will grow that community by word of mouth, much like EvE. I don't have a feeling that these forums will contribute to the success of many games, especially Indy games.

In the sense that people hope it has time to grow before it flops...I doubt it.
It doesn't take terribly long to get to max level. Once you are max level there really isn't much to do. Even if you go through and do all the AP quests, vehicle quests, faction quests...you'll have it done in about a month.
So what do you do with the current end game? Grind faction, harvest or PvP. A lot of people that play the game could give two shakes about PvP. So that leaves...grinding and harvesting. I know that it didn't hold interest for me. I also know there was a pretty decent attrition rate for others that were there to test the end content.
On a positive note..if there were a central hub...people could stand around and do dance emotes for a good week without being bored
Its kind of like saying you will never eat a strawberry or listen to a song because you heard someone say I didnt like them because they have seeds on the outside or the songs lyrics didnt make sense to them.
All I can say is if that was the case for everything so much would be missing from the world today
Give anything a try atleast once in your life or you could miss the 1 thing that will change your life forever
Oh and that is a view on attitude as a whole not FE
Well, the people that would get to max level in a month, in all honesty, I don't really care about them. It's not a personal thing, mind you. It's just that for those people no developer on this earth at current will be able to keep up with satisfying them. They will even eventually burn out on PvP because they consume so much "content" so fast. No, I don't have a "fix" for that, but neither am I interested in thinking up one.
So, looking at the glass half full, it'd be interesting to see what is added to the game 6 months down the road. An additional sector (#4) that allows Clans and/or factions to build their own cities and battle for them? I think that would be a nice addition. And I don't think the devs are adverse to it. I think they just needed/wanted to establish something stable first (in terms of game environment) and then add the "risky business" later on.
Again, what I get, and I may be wrong, from alot of the detractors is that they think "this is it" in terms of how the game will develop. Essentially, they think it won't develop any more than this and add other features. Well, providing they get enough subscriptions to pay the bills (which I believe they will) they can then add new concepts/features/gameplay.
*shrug* No game is all things to everbody, sure. And FE is not as terrible as some folks try to make it out to be.

I agree with your facts 100%.
I feel the EXACT same way.
I don't find combat bland. Maybe its my skill set, and I have a lot of abilities. Really, it feels much better to just shoot a gun, I enjoy those aspects, and the FPS style. Oblivion, Fallout3 are both bland combat games, but appeal to a large majority. Thats my take on it.
I see a lot of Eve talk, and I wonder what Eve's reviews and forums were like when it launched or was in beta, probably the same as this game, because it won't appeal to the masses. I'm glad. I don't want my 14year old brother playing this game. I'm 27 with two kids and have some degree of intellect compared to the large majority of gamers. This game will build a solid base. Its more apparent everyday in beta.
I know some people say that endgame is the slight pvp, crafting and looting. Well that is what made most of my friends and I stick to swg pre-nge. I feel no rush in this game.
As for open pvp, I'm glad they went against it. I think it would of killed the game. I know I wouldn't play it. I have yet to see a succesful open pvp game(Eve is space based bit different). I know earlier UO did it, not sure about it now, and Shadowbane was quite enjoyable, but wears on you after a few months, darkfall not to sure about it as it needs more time to develop.
Not to mention being up PVP would of meant competition with Earthrise, which I see as the PVP post-apoc MMO. Being different can actually work to boths advantages.
This game has a rough feel to it. Some like it others don't, but I liked your review as you state what many have, it has a good chance of being great, it just doesn't appeal to you.
