But he's right - ALL MMORPGs are different to some extent, and its impossible to make a choice for you until we know what you like... what other games have you played and enjoyed?
I liked the space combat in the star wars movies
I loved x-wing and tie fighter. Still do.
I play eve and love it as its space combat....
I couldn't give a rats-a&#" about being a singer or being a mudstomper.
For me that means eve-online.
Of course, if you like games where you shoot handguns and swing lightsabers, then SWG is probably more your cup of tea.
<shrug> I've never played SWG, and have no real inclination to, it might be a great game for you.
Originally posted by BurningAngel I guess you cant really compare the two but still not sure which is better..Mostly because i like swg but eve is coming out with all the new patches.
BOTH are equally NICE - but for different reasons.
EvE is still FREE to play and try. So why not play it for free and see how you like it.
SWG had another free trial. A computer magazine called Maximum PC had a DVD that had the entire SWG game + JTL expansion all on one DVD. First try EvE and post here again how you liked it (or post in the EvE forums.) After you are done trying EvE, I can hook you up with a free SWG trial.
These games are totally different. It really depends on what you like to do. I myself find EVE to be a far more enjoyable experience. Try the 14 day free trial. If you like i can send you a buddy key. EVE is run by a smaller company who really does care about its game and the games community. 14 days is good enough to get a taste but you wont see the real game for at least 6 months. The real game to EVE is 0.0 space where the players control the regions. It's mostly a PVP game at that level although you always have the option of doing agent missions, mining and manufacturing. One of the great things about EVE is its skill system. To progress in the game it only takes time. You even learn skills while offline. It will take you about 3 months or so to get decent enough skills to really get active in 0.0 space. After that the direction of the game is really up to you. You can either be a pirate or a good guy. In EVE your in your ship 100% of the time. The only penalty for dying is financial in the cost of insurance, clones and loss of implants. You should always keep your ship insured and have a clone that covers your skill points but overall money will never really be an issue. If you do decide to try it join a corporation as soon as you can. EVE players are extremely helpful and most will take the time to help a new player out. Ofcourse if you meet the wrong guy he might just take you to 0.0 space and pod you for giggles but hey them damn pirates are tricky!~
On the SWG side.. I didnt care for the game. I think i played it for 2 hours and deleted it. It was more the interface than the actual game. It seemed kind of clumsy to me. One thing i demand of a game is an interface i'm comfortable with. I also had alot of lag in SWG but since then i've got a new pc so that would probably be gone if i tried it again.
I'd suggest you try project entropia before paying for star wars. It's a "free"sci fi game in so much that you dont have to pay for the software of pay a monthly subscription cost. Granted if you put no money into it the game is very difficult but its doable. $20 will get you a quick start and you'll really be able to develop a feel for the game www.project-entropia.com I actually like this free game a 100x more than swg. You can even have your in game money deposited in your bank account at a 10:1 ratio.. 10 peds = $1 USD so theres an opportunity to make real money off this game. Thats always a nice feature LOL.
Anyway i hope you find what your looking for .. Whats life without a couple games to be addicted to.

It is very intresting you admit that playing EvE for 14 days for free is just a taste, but does not allow one to see the real game. Yet you have the gall to claim you "played" SWG for a whopping t-w-o h-o-u-r-s which allows you to comment on SWG. LOL! The ingame tutorial itself takes 30 mins to 1 hour to complete before you even get to the starting planet/city. Then it is another 30 mins to 1 hour just to get used to the learning curve. Thus you actually played zero of the game SWG. You most definatly are in no position to comment on the real game. Need a more brutal example? Imagine if someone played EvE for 2 hours and attempted to comment on what the real game is like? How much of a solid position would they be in to comment on what EvE is like?
Last, the SWG interface is customizeable. Of course, if you took the time to use the ingame tutorial, you would have found that out.
I'd suggest you try project entropia before paying for star wars.
He asked specifically about EvE Online, and SWG. Not about PE, or DAoC, or AO, or any other game. BTW, PE has many good and bad issues about it too. Just say "I have played EvE and here is what I can say about it. I have not played SWG and thus I cannot say anything about it. Maybe someone else who has recently played SWG will comment on it."
dont hijack this post to freakin flame someone who doesnt like your game fanboy. I admitted that i only played it for a couple hours therefore what can i say about the game other than i hated it and only played it for a couple hours. The interface was horrible. i explained all that. Go back to the SWG forums.
Actually i played SWG for about 20 hours total. Well past the tutorial. I even rented a bike and drove around the country side. It just didnt look all that enticing and the interface was clumsy and difficult. I was really expecting more but then after seeing EQ2 i've come to the conclusion that SOE cant design a game without McQuaid. I gave him/her a free alternative in Project Entropia because there is no board here for the game. I wish mmorpg.com would do something about you flaming/hijacking fanboys who dont wanna do anything but spout the greatness of your games and piss on the people who dont agree with you. Suspend your posting abilities.. remove your account.. its really ruining these forums lately.
Edit yes i only had a taste of SWG and it tasted BAD!
Well, ive played EVE for only 1 month and SWG for about 8 month, EVE is a great game but you will get bored pretty fast.. combat, mining, trading <--- BORING (Except for large scale PVP battles, but thats about it for me) EVE is more a clicking game.. all you do is click and everything goes automatic, and it isn't really that challanging, good part about EVE is the training system, so no grinding SWG though has more possibilities and it's alot more fun then EVE imo, but the grinding part sucks..
dont hijack this post to freakin flame someone who doesnt like your game fanboy. I called you out, using your own words against you. And your response is to resort to name calling LOL! I will leave it to the lurkers to decied what they think - you say 2 weeks is not enough time to get to know the real game in EvE. Yet you claim to know SWG enough to post about it after playing for 2 hours.
Actually i played SWG for about 20 hours total. Well past the tutorial.
Then why didn't you say this before? Why not just admit "Look I made a mistake in saying anyone who has played EvE for 14 days will have a taste, but will not know the real game.... yet I claim to know the real game of SWG after playing for 2 hours."
Instead of digging an even deeper hole. My point still stands. Using your own words and quote as proof. 20 hours, 2 hours, still does not put one in position to comment on any MMORPG - EvE, SWG, DAoC, EQ, WoW, Lin, EQ2, Lin2, any game.
I wish mmorpg.com would do something about you flaming/hijacking fanboys who dont wanna do anything but spout the greatness of your games and piss on the people who dont agree with you. Suspend your posting abilities.. remove your account.. its really ruining these forums lately.
Re-read my first post in this thread. I like both EvE and SWG. And I have far more than 2 hours of game time in both games. Me pointing out you have 2 hours of play time in a game, yet you bash it... is not an attempt to hijack this thread. It is not being a fanboy. It is simply making sure the person who started this thread gets real, true, answers to their question.
Edit yes i only had a taste of SWG and it tasted BAD!
I managed to enjoy myself for 1 year in SWG before I quit cause I was bored of the game. And SWG is lots of fun, while it lasts!
If you're looking for a SciFI RPG style game, where you feel you're in a virtual world and not just in space shooting stuff all the time like in Eve, go with SWG!
Whatever you do when you join SWG, don't start begging people for money and crap like that. If you become too rich too quick, you will buy all the best armor, best weapons, master professions too quickly and you will get bored fast. You gotta take your time, enjoy the game to it's fullest, socialize, etc.
I even suggest you buy SWG but not the Jump to Lightspeed Expansion right away! Cause if you buy the JTL expansion, it's very expensive to buy better ships and components to upgrade your ships! Enjoy fighting on planets, enjoy harvesting ressources, enjoy crafting, enjoy flirting with all the pretty twilek dancers (hehe), then buy the JTL Expansion, go into space, buy ships and components with all the money you've gathered in the previous months, and you will have fun!
Now is the perfect time to join SWG! Cause most people quit and say it sucks, heck even myself, the game sucks after playing for 1 whole year, but since you are new, Sony is gonna be doing the combat balance revamp, they will be adding new stuff since we, veteran players, have been waiting non-stop for new content but SOE was so busy with creating the expansion we had nothing to do for 3 whole months!
nm i'm not even going to leave a rant up here. xplororor you act like a 12 year old. you should really be banned from this site. After reading some of your other posts i've decided i'm done responding to you.
I'd rather play something that is FREE to play online.
My opinion is: buy the game ONCE, play online FREE.
The "Pay to Play" seems to me to be used by too many companies these days to cover for a not quite as good a game that they promise to continually improve. Usually they somewhat do that at a very very slow pace to entice their end-users to continue paying for a while longer.
I'd rather buy a copy of a game and play it free for a while. (up to 2 years perhaps.)
For what one pays for a year for an online game I can buy several games and play them for free.
Personally like to play a game that allows you to learn it in Single Player Mode then play Multiplayer Online.
But swg isnt free to play online if it were i'd play it. it has a monthly charge just like all of the other SOE games. Project Entropia is the free one. No cost to download no monthly charge. You have to pay for Eve-Online as well its only a free trial but you have to pay for the software if you get an account. Project Entropia is the only free 3d fps that i've found so far.. are there others?
EvE Online is 100% FREE to download. And to try out.
SWG is 100% FREE to get. And to try out. The past few months have seen various computer magazines come with free SWG CDs. The most recent one is Maximum PC, December 2004 issue. It has 1 DVD with the SWG game + JTL expansion. The official SWG site at station.com also had a free download. (Not anymore right now.) That is why I told the original poster and creator of this thread, try EvE first since the free download is still available. MMORPG.com still has free EvE accounts.
If he later wants to try SWG for free, I can hook him up with a free download (I'd host it for a few hours until it finnished and he had it. Then I'd take it down.), and free CD-Key from Maximum PC magazine.
I've played both SWG and EVE. They are completely different games but they both lack depth, so I would not recommend either one. EVE is unique, which makes it score a little higher than SWG, IMHO. What I don't like about it is that you only explore the universe from the perspective of your spacecraft. Combat and mining are the two primary activities and neither one is all that compelling. Exploration is something that could be very fun in that game (mapping star systems), but as soon as you pop into a system, you already know everything there is to know about it down to the rendering of the planets, since there is very little variety in the graphics.
SWG has the potential of being a great game, but it falls short at present. It has a good character development system and the universe certainly looks like the universe of the movies. However, the activities that are available are limiting and repetitive. You also do plenty of things that don't fit in with the universe... I never saw Luke running from nest to nest blasting birds, and once you max out your character (there is a cap to the number of skills you can learn) there isn't much left to do. That's why I quit.
If asked to choose between the two games, I'd pick EVE, since it's very different from other games. SWG is very much like all of the fantasy MMOGs.

The one thing EVE does not lack in is Depth lol, and as for limited activities that depends on ones playstyle and no you don't know everything about a system just being in it but I know what you mean.
Yeah leaving the ship might have been cool (may happen one day) but running into furniture and seeing chars dance gets old fast....
Such a shame (still pissed off about it here) about SWG I will never know how SOE could screw it up as much as they did and its a dam shame as it should have been so much better
Just imagine..... you have the SW universe to make a fun game out of and you make a very poor clone of the worst in mmorpgs and then piss on the playerbase??? I mean....wtf really?
["I never saw Luke running from nest to nest blasting birds" lolz]
OK. Explain the "depth" in EVE. Combat is repetitive and mining is too. Being a pirate is OK, but once again, it's repetitive. The skill system is somewhat interesting, but it just let's you do the same repetitive activities against higher level opponents. Big whoop. There's no increase in the VARIETY of activities no matter how you slice it.

Hmm
trying to find the best traderoutes, trying to find cheap producers, outsmart other producer, getting a customer base, building up a corporation, training newbies, building up a alliance, building pos in 0.0 space, defend your space against other players and pirates, manage the industries of your alliance, make deals with provider, politics, finding friends, troll the eve forums, plan player events and execute them, having fun fighting against your corp members, counsel your corpmates, try to find a special nifty ship setup, planning your future skill progression,[everything a human brain can think of], etc ....

OK I will try..... but I will not be able to scratch the surface really..... here goes.....
Combat:
Ship type: Frigates, Cruisers, Destroyers, Battle cruisers, Assault ships, Battleships, Heavy assault ships, Covert ops ships, Logistics ships, all of which are dependant on the characters skills the type, rank and levels in.
Ship weaponry: Rockets, Missiles light heavy and defender, Torpedoes, Cruise missiles, Targeted and untargeted. Projectiles, Rails, Beams, Smart bombs, Drones, a host of Energy and ECM weapons the class/size/type of weapons the quality of, the ammunition and modification of range, damage type of ammunition and missiles Thermal, Kinetic, Explosive, EM all of which are dependant on the characters skills/ship the type, rank and levels in.
Relative ship speeds, signature radius size, directions of flight and modifications of modules. all of which are dependant on the characters skills/ship the type, rank and levels in and not to mention the bonuses from fleet skills/gang.
Ship fittings, Shield recharge modules and resistances modules to damage types (thermal, kinetic, explosive, EM) the class/size/type and armour modules and resistances/repair modules and ECM/ECCM warfare modules all of which are dependant on the characters skills/ship the type, rank and levels in.
Mining: Ship type *see above and add Mining barges and Industrials, mining laser type, class, quality and quantity fitted to ship and mining Drones all of which are dependant on the characters skills the type, rank and levels in.
(basic miner, miner 1, miner 2, cu vapor particle bore stream 1, deep core mining laser 1, dual diode mining laser 1, ep-r argon ion basic excavation pulse, ep-s gaussian i excavation pulse, ice harvester 1, modulated deep core miner 2, modulated strip miner 2, strip miner 1 to name a few)
Method of mining different types of ore, Deep Core, Strip, Ice harvesting and standard (soon to have Gas mining) all of which are dependant on the characters skills the type, rank and levels in.
Some of the available ores are veldspar, scordite, plagioclase, pyroxeres, omber, kernite, gneiss, spodumain, hedbergite, hemorphite, jaspet, mercoxit, bistot, arkonor and ice ore all of which are scattered around 5.000 solar systems usually with several belts per system and better ores in lower security space.
All these ores can be refined into minerals and so on (far too much for me to go into) dependant on the characters skills the type, rank and levels in.
There are also different ways to mine sucking low ores in safe space solo, ninja mining high end ores while dodging PC and NPC pirates and massive fleet Ops that destroy entire belts/systems or asteroid/Ice belts.
With moon harvesting arrays moons (lol) can be mined for raw minerals
Want more eerdigep? I'm sure I could go on and on and on here..... but you asked for combat and mining...sorry I never really went into tactics much but there are far better folk to ask about that than lil old me
Whats kept me playing (apart from a short break atm) is that there is no limits in EVE other than what players impose on themselves and far too many have zero imagination and or courage to take a risk or two and blame the game for being a bore lolz.... glass houses.....rocks anyone?
"Solo is, will always be, the main market. A MMORPG that succeed with little or no solo appeal is doing great considering they are ignoring the main player base.'' - Anofalye
Only played Eve myself. Nice game, and the developpers really care (even made a free expension lateley if i'm not wrong). But Eve requires some time to invest.
About SWG, did not play that game, but from my experience in EQ and what i saw with EQ2 and all the feedback I had, this game sound like a big waste of a fabulous licence (and i'm a star wars fan since return of the jedi came to movie theater when i was a child). And did I say i hate SOE ?

That's my $0.02.

The PvP system is pretty good in eve but not so much in swg
Only played Eve myself. Nice game, and the developpers really care (even made a free expension lateley if i'm not wrong). But Eve requires some time to invest.
About SWG, did not play that game, but from my experience in EQ and what i saw with EQ2 and all the feedback I had, this game sound like a big waste of a fabulous licence (and i'm a star wars fan since return of the jedi came to movie theater when i was a child). And did I say i hate SOE ?
my 2 cents
