I guess you've not played one of those 2 games.
no it appears you haven't.
Go look at the website, and L3 which was in production a few years ago disappeared.
The story lines are even somewhat similar with the whole Daeve thing <which you were supposed to become in L2 but it never got implemented>...........
Of course it is. The entire project started as a large expansion to L2, so it naturally feels very much the same in many ways.
"There are two great powers, and they've been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."
John Parry, to his son Will; "The Subtle Knife," by Phillip Pullman
Actually it's not. Aion is its own game itself. It's not the "L3" of NCsoft. There was a project on L3 already but some of the developers left and make BlueHole Studios and got the source code when they left. NC then went into remaking the game from scratch while BlueHole Studios made "Tera" from the work they did in L3. Tera is still in development and will be a kick ass MMO when it comes out.
That's what I heard from a lot of ppl. Not too sure about the sources and the real story behind it.
From my understanding Lineage 3 is still in production. Besides, one is a free for all game, the other is a faction based game. This is no small difference from a design standpoint.
It's not L3. L3 is being published seperately by NCSoft and has already been scrapped and re-worked once.
The original development team of L3 split though after the code was stolen (hence why it was scrapped), and now there will be two L3 type titles comming out.
TERA Online (Old L2 Devs) and Lineage 3 (New L3 Devs).

Don't get me wrong im not flamming or anything, it's just how do ppl not see this especially ppl who call themselves mmo'ers.
I've played everything since Meridian 59 first released and honestly the best games ive played were Meridian 59, Lineage 2, and i hate to say it.....WoW. Every other game that comes out seems to be a fad and only holds my attention for a couple months till i cant deal with the fact that i got ripped off by the company, Literally i feel like games like AoC and War just took my money and laughed all the way to the bank not expecting anyone to play it for a long time. At least Aion seems to be able to hold ppl's attention for longer than a couple months.
This just confirms my post ^ ^
Nice. Thank you for clarifying.
Honestly since Aion came out L3 doesnt exist anywhere that i can find except fanboy sites.......L3 will not come out mark my words....
BTW L3 may have been scrapped once....and turned into Aion is more like it.
COMPARE THE SKILLS IN AIO N AND L2 THERE REALLY ISNT DIFFERENCES.
TIME STAMP for future generations to see
This just confirms my post ^ ^
Nice. Thank you for clarifying.
Precisely. They have already stated many times that Aion is "its own thing".
As I have played a LOT of Lineage 2 and have experienced up to lvl 22 in Aion (with some lower lvl characters as experiments in what I don't waht to be playing) I feel that I can say that Aion does NOT feel like a Lineage 2 or 3 or any other number one might want to put in.
The art design in many places is reminiscent of L2 but I believe it is the same artist (head artist? However they do these things ) that worked on both.
But the gameplay is very different.
L2 is about a lot of grind, open world, ffa pvp and a very harsh crafting mechanic, all the while dealing with clan/alliance/personal warfare.
Aion has significantly less grind (except for those people who come from easier games but that is fodder for many other, already existing threads) And is more quest based. It is RvR fighting and the world, at least up to the point I've experienced, is a bit more linear.
Though it shares similar game mechanics such as trying to enchant an item with the chance the enchanting will fail (in aion the item just goes down one level toward its base level - and never under - and in Lineage 2 your item explodes, you get crsytals and you feel as if someone hit you with a picnic table) I think that these elements are more about what korean games might bring to the table [chance mechanics] as opposed to what L2 brings to the table. Could be wrong about that.
In any case, Aion is NOT L2 or 3 or L pi.

Mark my words... No one really cares.
Yes, this game does have a feel much like that of L2, but to say its L3 is going a little far. I mean, sure its L3 minus the grind, w/o crafting being a pain in the ass, with factions instead of FFA, with an upgrade system that you can't actually break your gear, no pure buffer classes that have no real use, No short term buffs that change fights completely, Power shards are helpful but they are no Soul Shot, i could go on.. But yea, its L3 with everything that made L2 what it is right?
Congrats, you saw two games that were a little alike and tried to say they were the same. You are the kind of person who belives that EQ2 really was a decent follow up to EQ1 weren't you?
Nope if you look at it, it's not. Aion has been around the same time as L3 production. The old scrapped L3 is now Tera Online. That is more similar to Lineage if you see the game.
lmao. That's a pretty darn good analogy.

Have to agree that there are elements of the Lineage series in it, but it is not L3.
On it's on Aion is a unique blend and is not a clone of anything i have played so far.
Its a clone of the typical quest grind games that are the norm of the MMO genre since WoW. How is it not a clone? The only unique thing is flying and other MMOs have flying so even that is not that unique.

I think alot of the confusion comes from the similar looks of the two games. There is def. from an outside perspective many similarities what with the korean anime graphics. What i havent really seen touched apon is the gameplay of these 2 games. Havent played aion yet though i prob will, but i hated L2's mechanics. Is aion similar?
even before that, there was an L3 in production. The suits at NCsoft wanted to make some "changes". The original creator of the Lineage series, working on L3 at the time, wasnt digging their change in direction; he left the company.....and "L3" became "Aion". And then from there on.....it is as you described. Anyways, that how I remember it. Theres a timeline somewhere that I read that had all this stuff listed chronologicaly. Fascinating read if you can find it.
Its always been my conjecture that the suits at NCsoft played WoW, were wow'd by it, and decided to make the game rvr and more quest based. That would certainly explain the first 10 shitty levels in aion.

And WoW was a copy of EQ, with some tacked-on lore and cute pop culture references. Your point?

ROFL, I love this thread!
I'd like to say, I thought EQ2 was the sequel to EQ. Further, I was really impressed by it but didn't love it cause my guild of online friends weren't playing it.
I thought Warhammer was basically Dark Age of Camelot II. And, I mean that in a good way; it was a big selling point among my friends.
My friends are describing Aion as DAoC III. And, friends from up to 10 years ago are showing up to take a look at it.
Its definately not DAoC III and not Lineage III. Its not terribly unique although it has a few neat new things like Express Mail and Player flying combat(no, not mounted flying combat).
We feel that there is or will be a game out there that isn't unique(we don't care about unique) but blends other games and computer game abilities in a manner that makes the game "FUN" for the majority of my friends. We thought Warhammer was going to be the answer but it wasn't. We like what we've seen so far and hope Aion will be the answer. It'll be a good year after release before we know if Aion is what we've been looking for but the guild, Reunion, plans to turn it on and take it for a spin.
Yup.. agreed with that. The char movemtn and interaction feels the same, the models art is close etc etc, even the flash and some moves do look the same.
The npc disposition / AI looks the same aswel, quest system alike too.
But hey.. they got wings and some new 'boobs' in the female models and decided to call it a new whole game.. wich it isnt.. its really a Lineage 2 evolution..
And y.. i played both games, was co_founder of Thor on Bartz and been in Aion closed betas aswel.
PS: I like AION but it should have been called Lineage 3 imo.

My point is that it is not a "unique blend" and "not a clone of anything". I was correcting the poster I quoted

Actually, they stated in a press interview on this site that the idea for Aion began as a large expansion to Lineage II. I don't care to go sift through things to find it for you. It was not part of the Lineage III project. Lineage III was scrapped long ago. This made it out into the world after some massive retooling. Thus, this is a spiritual L3 in my, and many others', books. And that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Yes, Aion is a terrible game and I'm not going to be playing it any more, but its idea began as an L2 update. Such a noble thought, gone to waste.

It does seem to take elements from EQ, DAoC, and Lineage.

Brad Pit have 2 legs........ wow, i have 2 legs too, IM A CLONE OF BRAD PIT
Aion isn't L3 but it is clearly the new flagship game of NCsoft so you can forget about L3 altogether imo , a L3 game would only divide their customer base and they don't even have the devs anyway .
