Yeah I hear you mate...god I hate the Swords and spell ****.

I've been playing EVE-Online for 2+yrs now so it gets my vote, I'm looking forward to SEED:THC however its a way off.

Face of Mankind is in beta atm.
    Matrix Online *shrugs* in beta.
SWG (is pants) but trials are around.
Centia Online is a long way off if they ever get there.
Vendetta Online (no comment *rolls eyes*) free trial avail.

Might have missed a few but hope its of help.

AO and EVE are pretty much THE Sci-Fi mmo's... both of them are equally uber image

SWG is also pretty fun (many will dissagree)

the one im really anticipating is Seed:THC though...

I am looking forward to Face of Mankind.. Its not game for everyone, mainly because of fps combat where real player skill matters, but this is ok with me, i wont become boring like hack and slash + special move sometimes.. and it creates really a great environment for role-play.. and in this game the story is the base building stone.

uh oh u missed out a major sicfi game... neocron, gameplay and fights are best ive seen, but the gfx is really old fashioned and not worth a look :)

i personally played eve online (i hate the skilling system, u simply wait for your skill to come completet, and as i see it u need to wait a year to get a decent guy), project entropia (the game is all nice but its simply to expensive on long term)

AO used to be great, now, sadly it's finally dying.

Neocron was AWESOME in it's day. True post-apocalyptic cyber-punk. Open PvP which induced a constant paranoia and very complex political system between gangs and factions.

But these days, I'm going to say Matrix Online. A lot of people judge this game unfairly due to the state of the beta when they tested, and for some reason seem to theink that they know what the finished game will be like.

The game is fun, even now, still in beta. It's unique, more interactive than most games, especially combat-wise (no hitting the attack key and going afk). And there's already a good community and the promise of a professionally written story that hinges on the actions of the players once the game is released.

Of course, no one really knows what the game will be like when it's released, but if they're only going to build on what they have already, it's going to be freakin' awesome.

Preordering = entrance to beta, and you don't have to pay for the game until it actually ships. You'll need to probablly call teh store after you've ordered and nag them for a key, but Gamestop for example e-mails them every thursday.

With AO dying, and SWG being the POS it is, Mxo is gathering a lot of refugees, and the player-base will be huge. Might want to consider it, m8.

     Best FREE sci-fi MMORPG:

TDZK (Space only browser based MMORPG. Nothing to download. The "poor man's EvE Online" heheh. A NICE game though. You can even loot NPC spacestations! And do many other things.

    http://www.tdzk.net/

Best Pay to play sci-fi MMORPG:

Anarchy Online (Sign up before January 15th, and you get 1 year free of the base game. Still enough to keep anyone busy for one year!). Also arguably the best all around MMORPG. Suffered from a bad game launch years ago. Has PvP for landcontrol, and TONS of other revoutionary features copied by newer, and some older, MMORPGs.

    http://www.anarchy-online.com/

Star Wars Galaxies - As long as you DO NOT play intending to be a Jedi, then this game is loads of fun! The best ever crafting system out of any MMORPG ever made. (Though I've heard Horizons is simular, but HZ is facing bankruptcy.) IMHO Anarchy Online is still a slightly better sci-fi game. Mostly because SWG does not have PvP for landcontrol = there's nothing concrete to fight for. NO way to change the world map or to affect it.

EvE Online - Space only MMORPG. Has many revolutionary features. Like allowing you to level up while you are not online. Many other intresting features!

Anarchy Online for character bashing, normal RPG in future setting.

    EVE for space sim.

Both games are superior to any competitors.

EVE gets special credits for being the most innovative in the MMO scene since... since the invention of bananas.

AO gets special credits for being free for a year, right now... Free download and no monthly fee until December 2005. So... A good time to check it out, if anything.

It should be thrown with great force"

Well it's been said plenty of times, but Anarchy Online and EVE-Online.

Anarchy Online has probably the greatest art team of any MMORPG out right now. I love how gritty the game looks. Shadowlands just blew me away though, they have really pushed the graphics to the limit of its engine. Lotharr i'm not sure how you can say it has bad graphics. Gameplay is great, PVP + Land Control is great. And now player cities that get invaded? Yeah, AO is far from being dead.

EVE-Online I don't want to comment too much on since I haven't given it enough time, but from what i've seen its great. The time based progression really kills it for me though, it just feels like you have nothing to do with how good your character is.

I say Star Wars Galaxies.  Simply because for at least 6 months you will have so much fun, SWG will become your favorite MMORPG of all time!  Cause it's Sci-Fi and has this Fantasy feel to it, just cause you can chose a melee profession using swords and polearms, not to mention you can also battle exotic creatures!!!

Problem is content... in my first 5-6 months I explored pretty much everything.  I was bored and all I did for the last 5-6 months after was grind to become a Jedi.  I never reached it cause of the Jedi revamp and I quit after 1 year of SWG.  But what sucks is that in that 1 year, I found myself really playing for no more than 6 months.  Cause when you grind a Jedi, you do the same thing over and over again in the same damn areas.

But I still suggest SWG to anyone that wants SciFi, and that's because we, the veteran players, have been suffering for over 8 months in SWG!  And it's finally the day that SOE themselves will finally revamp all of Star Wars Galaxies for the combat to be balanced with no more uber template professions, hopefully more content and more!

So any new players that join, like NOW, will live through the revamp and we can just hope SOE won't f*ck up!  They sure hell screwed up in the past 3 updates... will they succeed in screwing up for a 4th time?  I hope not, or else SWG will definatly DIE!

    ___________ ___ __ _ _ _
    Stealth - Ambush - Hemorrhage - Sinister Strike x2 - Cold Blood - Eviscerate - Vanish - Preparation - Cold Blood - Ambush - ... you're dead! :P

Go with eve online fly arround mine, train your skills(minutes at first then hours then days real time) did I mention mine ur buy things blow rats up get blown up mine. Buy a bigger ship mine some more get attacked by 5 other players you go boom lose shiny ship. I had fun playing eve for the first 6 days of my 14 day trial but then got old.

Its probbaly the best sci fi mmorpg out but how many are there? Has a great communtiny, spledid graphics and combat was never repeative. Mindless grinding, I hate the pvp and takes too long to get a skill etc(I think its just a way to get you to stay wait another week or so and pay another subscription)

Let me tell you, the best Sci-Fi MMORPG will be Imperator. This game looks and sounds simply stunning. The people at Mythic are definitely moving in the right direction with this one.

For the ones that are I would Say: EVE-Online (super active and always settled by players) ; Anarchy Online ( yes different type but sci-fi so has to be mentioned) ; Recently Released Saga of Ryzom (very entertaining and fun game set in a very intriguing sci-fi rich world) ; Earth and Beyond (but that is old and long forgotten :( ) ; City of Heroes (nice but its an acquired taste) ; Planetside ( I am not sure how many people still playing this game but it was quite fun in its time).

For those that are to come: Tabula Rasa (I just cant wait for it to come out) ; Matrix Online (easy to figure out ) ; Face of the Humankind (intriguing style of game and I interesting) ; I bet there are more but I just can't remember or havent yet researched.

That is all I had to add :).

    Have fun contemplating!

Life is worth living! Look at all the games that one can create and bring the fun to your computer ;)
