Windows MMORPG's working on mac without wine or BootCamp!

This method is almost untested (But working without a doubt)

What you need?

  1. Windows 95/98/2000/XP/Vista/7 installer (suggested, CD or DVD)
  2. Apple computer
  3. Internet (check, if you are reading this :D)

First install VirtualBox (from http://www.virtualbox.org/ ). It is FREE virtual-machine-software by Sun microsystems Inc.

After it's done, make a new virtual machine and use dynamic hard-drive. This allows you to use both (mac and win) with dynamic file-sizes.

Open your just created virtual machine

Insert your windows-CD into your CD-drive.

Apply this CD for your virtual-machine by clicking the CD icon from the bottom of the VM-window and choose the CD-drive that you want.

Install your windows normally

After you have installed Windows, press HOST+D (By default left cmd+D). This will begin installing the needed drivers for your VM

After you are done with these, install your game and enjoy :)

DISCLAIMER!! Tested games (help me with this):

  • Mordor II: Darkness Awakening
  • The Chronicles of Spellborn (Testing at the moment)

Interesting - But what kind of performance hit?

Since it would have to be emulating DirectX -  Similar to how VMware Fusion handles it, it would have to run slightly above a snails pace.

I'd like to see you try EQ2 or LOTRO in that method and watch your computer throw itself out a window.

I'm a Mac user as well, so if I get bored later, I'll help in your testing, I'd like to mess w/ Champions on my Mac personally, but if it's anything like previous attempts at making Windows nonsense work in OSX then it's doomed to fail.

More companies need to get on this "Cider" bandwagon.   EA is there, but EA has junk.

And first person to turn this into a "Macs Suck"  or "Macs VS PC" debate is a douchebag.   Thanks... Figured I'd add that since that's how all of these threads go.

Hey TSW Players http://www.unfair.co/ for Mission guides, Lore Locations and stuff....

Agreed. I'm testing, but i made too small Master-hard-drive, so i'm trying to get a working slave.... I'll tell you the performance with 2,4 GhZ MacBook (with integrated graphics) as soon as i get 2TB dynamic drive.

    Bad idea.

You're basically running an operating system on top of an operating system. There's going to be one massive performance hit with this. You're better off just booting to Windows and running your apps native.

Agreed.  Not only that, but graphics acceleration is currently in beta for Virtualbox, and limited to Directdraw, no Direct3D.  I've been playing with it myself, if I can't even get Aero to run in Win7, graphics performance in a game would be lacking to say the least.

    1.  I'm just testing
    2. There is 3D acceleration for VB. You got to try HOST+D
    3. I can't use boot-camp, because my HD is not solid anymore. I'd need to install Mac OS X again and I'm too lazy for that.
