Not really much to think about there. The ships in the movies and TV shows all flew like that. This is why I get such a kick out of the people crying about STO not having true space flight dynamics (Newtonian Physics) in the 3D thread. Star Trek ships have always done things like banking turns which is absurd from a purely Newtonian science viewpoint. This is science fiction and has little to do with real science... no matter how much the die hard Trekkies want to believe otherwise.
On a side note though I was stoked to see The Guardian of Forever in one of the scenes they showed. I was hoping that some of the original series would make it into the game regardless of the time line they are using. This seems to confirm that it has!
::yawn:: When I see the lame animations of the characters and the lame looking combat with phasers I cannot help but think they have totally messed up. Watching what looked like an NPC taking multiple phaser hits to drop it just seems so - sorry to put it this way, but - lame.

Yeah I noticed that also but it is a MMO so I give it a little slack for the sake of MMO mechanics. The one thing I did think was really lame was the way ships blew up in space however. When the Romulan Warbird explodes it just kind of disappears and gets replaced with an explosion animation that was like half the size of the ship. This just looked awful in my opinion and showed that the game lacks damage modeling of any kind. This is the one thing that I took away from the vid that has me a little concerned. I saw numerous other things that weren't exactly stellar also but the damage modeling was the biggest disappointment for me personally. Hopefully these things are just because it's a pre-beta build of the game and will be ironed out later. That may just be wishful thinking on my part however.

I wanna echo that. I realize the devs need some sort of hit point system in place, cause nobody likes to be one hit killed, but it just didn't sit right seeing a phaser blast hit the same character over and over again. That's just not Star Trek.

same here, but i'm holding off final judgement until I know more about the person to person combat or even try it for myself as I don't know what the 'back story' to that part of the clip is. Where the phasers on stun, are they renewing the idea of armour and/or personal shielding or is this the way the ground combat will be?
personally though I like some of the animations for the characters that i've seen but then the vvid isn't very high quality
I think i'm actually worried for the game now, just hearing the guy say they weren't interested in having people go into engineering to push buttons as he calls it, makes me feel like they don't to do anything involving taking care of your ship etc etc.
you know star trek type of stuff that happened on the show, all we see is fighting...so is this a combat mmo sim? because honestly i'm hoping for more then fight fight fight, while i know they aren't making a sim, they still could actually you know, make the game in a way so you feel like your in the Trek universe, not just some lame combat game.

Read the sticky about STO. I agree the game's graphic engine is not up-to-paar, but I also think Old Republic's isn't so great either...and like was said, I can ignore so-so graphics for great gameplay. After reading everything they plan to shove in the game, I feel that trailer they showed was sorely lacking...and I'm worried about even trying it. Though, good thing is that I have FFXIV to save me if its terrible and I still have a beta to see its quality anywho...
The ships seem to move too arcade-y for my taste, I get a really unpleasant 10-inch model vibe from them. And no, I'm not a ST fan by any stretch of the imagination. The artwork itself, though, I found better than I expected.
Oh, and I'm hoping to see what they have in store for exploration in the coming months... After all, isn't Star Trek supposed to be deep into that?
After CCP's big Dust 517 announcement, this kinda looks like a foot note. Maybe they are blowing their wad so much on Champions Online they are cutting corners. Compared to what EVE already has, however, I'm just not sold.
And whoever said that ships moved like that in the movies/series'...no, not capital ships, which is most of what they showed. It was like someone animated a B-52 to do a loop and go into a high-G turn. Not very impressed.
Maybe we can give Cryptic a little more time to share more of what this game is all about. It's just too early in development for me to jump ship so soon. My god they simply showed a trailer from a convention in Germany filmed with a handheld digital cam.
Also I keep hearing (in this thread and the other about the STO trailer) that Cryptic surely has put all their muscle into CO.
Are you completely out of your minds?
Cryptic is quite aware of the IP they have in their hands and have stated so many times.
EDIT: To the above poster.
Great point about the Eve Dust game announcement. Even though I'm a die hard Eve player (since '05), my fear is that
with new features such as Ambulation (oh yaaa!) and now with this new two connected games concept, I honestly don't
know how much of a fighting chance STO, TOR, Jumpgate Evolution, and BP are really going to have in the end.
As much as I will always adore Eve, I'm always looking for a good second mmo to indulge in.

I was not that impressed with the footage I saw taken off the screen at GamesCon. The humanoid models looked plastic and the Spacehip battles not that great. I sure hope they can do better, even if I have to wait another six months for release. This is very special for a lot of people and should be done right.
Yeah if they manage to screw up a huge opportunity like a Star Trek MMO because of a hurry, greed or not enough research done as to what the gaming comunity wants and expects from the game , they might as well close shop.
You don`t want to feel the wrath of angry gamer nerds hehe.

There's some things to keep in mind about this video. The first being this is ALPHA video GAME PLAY footage. The game is not even in Close Beta yet. Personally, I think it looks pretty decent for being still early before release. I'm sure some textures, animations, or effects will be updated or changed still before release.
Another point that's been brought up several times over at the official Star Trek Online Forums is that some of this game video footage has been sped up from the normal game speed. (ex: ships moving and turning faster then they will - phaser fire going off more quickly then they will) This has been confirmed by others who have seen demonstrations of the game at other conventions. I can only imagine they did this to fit as much as possible into the "short" amount of presentation time they had. So, I wouldn't necessarily look for some of that "dog-fighting" feel will not quite translate over in reality.
That being said, overall I think they have a rather solid foundation to the game's space component. I will certainly agree, however, that the ground combat portion can use a LOT more work before it's polished enough to be good. I'm still hopeful for the way this game will turn out. But, only time will tell for sure.
Looks pretty good for alpha to me. Generally alpha tends to be to see if the overall mechanics work, and not to see if something looks pretty yet. Once things are confirmed to work correctly, then better animations, timing, graphics, etc. get put in.
Kind of like building your own car, you don't polish the rims and do a great paint job before even building the rest of the car.
And to those that are so direly afraid that this won't be completely and exactly like the Star trek episodes: Really? I mean, just really? A lot of stuff that would have to be in the game then just wouldn't be fun, there would be a lot of time where you simply had nothing to do, current computer specs couldn't handle everything, and the list goes on.
For now we are stuck with the best that can be done to create a fun ST MMO with current technology. Heck, if things go well enough, expansions could bring new features that we all want, or even a whole new game. It's not unheard of. Everquest has a part 2, most MMOs have expansions that added new features and even new graphics, and some IPs have multiple games now (SWG and SWTOR).
I've played some MMO betas in my day, and I must say, this ALPHA looks better than some Betas I've seen.
Will it be the game YOU invisioned? No. It wont be for ANY of us. Why? Because we aren't making it. Best we can do is hope the people that get in Beta have some influence to ensure what is in now is done in ways we can like, and that the players will have enough influence after launch to get featurees we want put in.

Humm, Starships flying like fighter planes i will have to think about that.

The graphics and especialy the animations (ground fights) look sub-par to what you would expect from a brand new MMO but I`m willing to accept it if:
- The game play is entertaining and fun (gameplay always comes first eye candy is just a bonus)
- There is no lag in big fleet fights.
On the other hand if you get lag anytime there are more then 20 ships on screen there will be no excuse for making sub-par gpx and animations.
Or maybe it`s just the video quality I dunno...
Ground fights did look silly but I`m more interested in the space stuff anyway.

There's a better version of this Trailer available at the link below. Keep in mind there is a short commercial before the video actually starts:
