So, we finally have some confirmation that a new EverQuest title is in development.
Taken from the recently published 'EverQuest 10th Anniversary' book by EverQuest creative director Rich Waters.
"So you can see there's a lot to wrestle with as we begin laying the foundation for EverQuest 'Next.' As I write this, we have concept artists and game designers working hard in our studio-taking the lessons of the past, the best parts of the present and the most promising ideas for the future-to bring the world of Norrath to a new generation of players, as well as the dedicated legions of fans who made the EverQuest franchise timeless. I hope we'll see you there."
Personally, i would guess its going to be a few years off and a console/PC release.
But, technical stuff aside, what type of gameplay do YOu want to see and what do you not? What do you expect to see in EQ3?
Comments
You know it wont ever been like what Everquest was before Luclin and all the other bullshit SOE added. Probably be free to play with MT guild wars like game or something lol. When he says to bring Everquest to a new generation you know things are changing and all he means by and for the old fans it'll have the lore.
Tbh though new players don't care about Everquest it's a generic geeky fantasy setting in the eyes of the post WoW generation. Everquest just has a bad name and it wont get over that anytime soon. I mean 20 years in the future is time to revive it but not now.
Here is what I would like to see:
I have bo doubt that SOE will just screw this and use the EQ brand to launch a ultra casual lite ez mode solo quest grinder dominated by a cash shop.
Basically, all I see it being is a virtual market space for the gulliable to prance around in and buy pretty virtual armour with real money for their paper dolls. I don't have much faith in the true spirit of EQ ever being seen again from this company.
IF they had a flash of sanity though, I would like to see, amongst other things;
All they need to do is remake EQ before Luclin and they win. Also, maybe try not to have all of the characters look like playdough. Maybe SOE should take a tip from LOTR, Aion, and I'd hate to say it but WoW too. Even though I dislike cartoony graphics, at least everything in WoW flowed well together. In EQ2 it felt like every person, tree, and building belonged in a completely different game. Really they just need to learn how to have their graphics flow well together. If they can do these two things, I'm in.
I hope this indeed we be a follow up on EQ2 and not something for a console.
But the things i would like to see:
1. Smoother graphics design (you now have completely different zones/places/areas where the difference,
is so huge you get shacken right awake out of the game.)
2. Good support for the current sytems as well as a posibility for low systems to stiull see a good game,
"dont make the mistake again by having the graphics scaling so mis-based where no-one was realy happy.
3. in game support for creating alliances, planning events/raids with guilds.
4. in game forum/message system for communicating with the guild.
Ortahr.
They didnt even do this when given the chance that a fresh server offered in the original EQ... I can't see them investing time and money to make it happen from here on.
Classic EQ is dead and gone, time to just face it.
There is no way SOE are interested in making a game like this now, if they were Vanguard would get some love.
Yes they should just remake classical Everquest with a kickass engine and then dominate the world. :P
Like I say, won't ever happen as long as SOE own the brand.
I would expect to see something closer to The Agency, rather then classic EQ, in terms of gameplay when this comes out.
I have absolutely no faith in this company and it's obvious derision for what made classic EQ so great.
Yeah i completelly agree.... i played eq from quite an early stage of the game and watched it be destroyed over time by sony it was such a shame. In that light i have a lack of faith in sony too, some of their updates for games are ok like they fixed planetside a bit and they did some nice updates here and there on eq2 but damn they know how to completelly screw a game up too. lol
These are the kinds of threads I like to bookmark for posterity reasons, LOL. After doing a little Googling there seems to be a consensus that Everquest Next could possibly be a console game (or cross platform), which would be very disappointing, if it were just a console game.
There is so little information I'm not even sure I care to speculate. Perhaps a little more information will come out soon.

I honestly doubt it will go to the way of the console, but it's hard to tell with Sony....lol. It would be very disappointing to say the least.

See, I see this exactly the other way... I honestly doubt that it WONT go the way of the console...
Tbh, the console issue isnt that bigga deal to me- I love my 360 and have no hangups about using them to play games (though I seriously doubt SOE would release this on the eggbox). It's all the other things SOE would do to the brand in order to make it more 'modern' that scares me.
Either way, I honestly expect this to be the only EQ I won't ever play, and that makes me a little sad.
graphic are insane in this game very few even today can say the same ,they upgraded this game i think it hasnt been 12 month ago, they plan to add new graphic feature on their next release, the problem with this game is if you want good graphic and fairly low system req you got to do it custom ,adjust it your self by hand and let me tell you,its not an easy job
im not sure if there are computer even in 2009 that can run everything at max ,and then you get the bandwith issue
if you max everything and pvp you ll probably get 20 second lagspike ,we tried an event in wow just 4000 player wanted to be gnome at same time lvl1 ,lol it just coundnt handle it and wow use way less ressource then eq2
yes your right wow use cartoon style while eq2 looks soo real once properly adjusted its scary
in the past computer used to be able to adjust the screen heartz to say 32 hz like playstation 3 do to trick people in to thinking its better then it really is but now i dont believe you can go lower then 59 hz nowaday in computer
if you got a 2 year old computer with an 8800gt you can safly put graphic to a fair setting ,but the fact remain is the pre-set way will look fair in most computer but you will need to custom adjust to look the best
but in my view it is worth the 2 hour set-up time once your satisfied the game remember it just remember the toon name and on your next toon build it will offer that setting .
but your right it would be nice if it could be auto-adjusted ,auto-detect but i bet there are too many system out there to be do-able
so my suggestion is to either use the pre-set eq2 give or custom adjust wich will take a while
but i can say once done it look insanelly good
I honestly doubt it will go to the way of the console, but it's hard to tell with Sony....lol. It would be very disappointing to say the least.

mm wow did say they wont go in the console market ,eq2 would be a good game to test ps3 since it is sure they ll sell a lot before chrismas ,300 kwid is a fair price and ps3 would be a good place for mmo.not everybody can afford computer but most can afford 300 kwid console

You want a death penalty but no pvp at all? I hate to be the bearer of unfortunate news, but I highly doubt that in the MMO market that exists today, you'll find SOE making a game with absolutely NO pvp.
That would be a recipe for sinking the EQ flagship even further, and SOE knows that.

Well, with all due respect, and not flaming you, but your wrong imo.
I don't see where the relationship necessarily exists between PvP and a DP that you seem to have picked up on? Why are they even connected? The vast majority of servers of classic EQ had exactly that... co-op based game play, no PvP, harsh DP. I'm not getting your point here really.
Listen, I am of the personal opinion that the MMO market 'that exists today' is pretty crap... Something is missing and what we are being offered isnt what a LOT of people want. We only play it because thats all there is. While I agree that SOE will only continue to make it more crap, thus they will never make the EQ that I and many other PvE preferred MMOers want to see, it dosent mean that people out there don't want this kind of game. I believe the potentiol market of Play to Achieve challenging PvE MMORPGs is massive and pretty much untapped.
There is a huge section of gamers that don't want to deal with the grief and general culture that comes with PvP games.
EQ was built on socialisers, achievers, explorers... Not PvPers, and many still hold the game dear in their hearts. Sure, PvP servers existed, I played on Vallon myself, but they wernt the body of the game. After 10 years, people still talk about classic EQ. People still want it, and it's not just about nostalgia... A lot of people want what it offered, because they arnt being offered it in modern MMORPGs and they miss it.
I have no idea where this myth has come from that all MMORPG players want PvP... I can't even think of many MMORPGs that do PvP well even... I don't get the attraction personally. I would rather play a FPS for my PvP and a MMORPG for PvE.
The only reason, imo, that a challenging co-op non-linear PvE MMORPG isnt huge is simply probably because noone is actually making them beacuse of this lazy fasion led thinking of PvP being required in all games. The market exists, it just isnt being catered for.

Was that the event that Athene has the video about on YouTube? They kept crashing servers, moving on to another... crashing that one, etc? That was pretty hilarious heheh.
As for what direction they'll take with another EQ... All I'll say is, if there's one thing SOE is wide-open and unapologetic about, it's their desire to anything and everything they can to squeeze every last cent out of their players. They've proven this in many ways, big and small, and there's no need to go into detail because we all know the situations I refer to.
So... in that light.. whatever it ends up being, I think the least possible outcome is anything resembling old EQ. As was said, if they really wanted to make something work in that direction, they've got a game primed for it already under their umbrella - Vanguard.
I expect it'll be something more in the direction they started taking EQ2 after WoW's launch... except now they'll have a game built from the ground-up with that in mind.
and the cash shop selling asphalt..." - Mimzel on F2P/Cash Shops
The keys to the next-next-next generation of MMOs could include:
EQ "Next" could have any or none of these. I just hope they look for ways to make the game more fun without the forced group content they had at launch.
I agree with these points in general, but the Raids one?
100% with you. I love co-op social play, groups to me are great, but raids need to be done away with imo.
It's sad but true. I would love for a remake of EQ, but Sony will probably screw it up anyway, but one can always hope they get it right (for once.) When Sony took over EQ it's was just a downward spiral of unfinished expansions. It still amazes me how unfinished those expansions were. Planes of Power was the worst for me. Couldn't even raid within the first few months of release because half of it wasn't even done.
Too bad Verant is gone.

yeah, too right they would.
Notice how he dosent even call it 'EverQuest III'?
SOE are already distancing the original game from the brand. It's tragic to watch.
What I want...
Real character customization. Animations choices (hmm, did WoW ever get those new dances? haha), visual effect choices, serious character appearance customization (and I don't mean 1 million hair colors and nose sizes) probably through equipment. I want to make my character itself really my character and not ranger number #10012321 that happens to be controlled by me.
Stereotype breaking classes. How about a tank mage? No, not the jack and master of all trades some other games created but a clothy caster style tank. How about some pet classes that aren't messed up? Maybe a tank pet that can actually tank? How about healer pets?
Die grind die. I want the power curve for time spent playing flatted so much that there is very little difference between a "casual" and a "hardcore" (try not to read too much into those two words) at any given level/tier. Removal of the fetch and fedex quests that are really just there for exp. Does the merchant really need to have a special order for panther pelts when I've already been killing panthers and selling the pelts to the merchant? Quests should always be relevant to the story if the game will be story driven like EQ 1 and 2.
I want the tank/dps/heal/etc permenant roles for a given character (class) to be eliminated. If I want to swap to a healer for a few months I should be able to do that. If my class gets nerfed into the ground for a year(s) (don't say this has never happened) I want to be able to switch without having to redo the potential mountains of content to get back to where I was on another class.
These suggestions are for a game similar to the current EQ games.
Forever looking for employment. Life is rather dull without it.
Also...
I'd like to see a game that is quite a bit structurally different as there are already two very similar everquest titles out there. I'd like to see a more player driven game in the EQ world. Take something like velious (three npcs factions: dragon, giant, dwarf) and let the players fund/whatever the side of their choosing and the npcs battle it out accordingly effecting greatly what is seen in the world.
