Question about chatting in WoW...

Well I have been having trouble with chatting in WoW. Like I see all these people talking and then when I say something it just says "my name says" whatever I said. All the other people that are talking it says "[1. General] [TheirName] And then what ever they said and they are all talking together but no one ever hears me. So whats the deal? What do I need to do to be able to talk in 1.General or whatever?

Type in /1 then hit the space bar then type what ever you want to type.
Type /<number of channel>. There should be a general channel, trade channel (big cities), and defense channel.
/1 (Insert Text) = gen chat
/2 (Insert Text) = trading
/3 (Insert Text) = local defence
/4 (Insert Text) = looking for party
