I don't get it.
If every area has multiple channels that users can manually switch between, why have separate servers instead of just hundreds of channels?
Side Note: When AoC announced channel instancing everyone crapped their pants and yelled about how it kills the open world. Why is it not a big deal in Aion?

Because it's not in every zone. It's only in the 1-10 or 1-20 zones so all the noobs won't overpopulate the area, so everyone has a chance to level up without having to wait to kill mobs.
Because it's different in Aion.
In AoC they tried to make their "channel instancing" work WITH the game. For example, you could walk out of a city, then walk back in and there'd be a completely different set of people in there. If you were PvPing someone, he could run out of the zone, and back in and go to a different "instance" of the zone, which the PKer had a completely random chance of getting into.
It totally killed immersion.
In Aion, you choose which "channel" you want to play in when logging in I believe. Once you're in, you're in. You're not going to walk out of an area, then next time you go back in, everyones gone because it's started a fresh "instance". No no no.
See what I mean? :P The way it's done in Aion, won't kill immersion.

Always hating on instances in MMOs! Open worlds, open PvP, territory control and housing please. More persistence, more fun.
Well that's a relief. I was annoyed at the prospect of every zone having 10 different "channels". It'd be nice if they eventually cut out the channels all together; sometime after the mass influx of noobs, of course.
After level 20 you won't see a channel ever again. That is the difference, even that is a gamebreaker for some people.
Only happens in the first two zones of each faction - Poeta/Ishalgen (1-10) and Verteron/Altgard (10-20).
Reduces the newbie area overcrowding issues.
y o y did they design it like this. could have done different starting areas to spread it out or designed it so there arent 4 bags of grain that 50 people are fighting over. o well, ill put this on my list as the first thing i don't like. no game is perfect, still cant wait for release.
They are smart and don't spend too much time on content only to be visited by most people once for a few hours each. Many games make the mistake of creating huge vast starting zones which are populated for the first month but after that they become barren and unused.
spellborn designed it so you came back quite often. (i shed a little tear to bring up what could have been something awesome) i mean were talking design here, sure the starter towns get barren, so knowing this they should have desinged around that. too late now, nothing can be done about it. thanks for the clarification, i never played AOC becuase i read about the crappy channeling. in this game it is certainly not a gamebreaker for me. just a dislike.

The channels scale depending on how many people are on-line and in that zone (lvl1-lvl10 zone or lvl10-lvl20 zone).
When a server gets mature there will be less noobs running around and the channels will scale back to 2. (max will be 10)
