I came into the game not expecting anything, so maybe that helped me enjoy it. Most complaints I've read, seen or heard in chat are pretty easiy fixes, or a lack of info.
Graphics are a two step process. From log in screen set them to max and most importantly set you moniter brighness to a low scale 1.2 or 1.3 at most. Its a dark game its not designed to be flushed with color. I noticed a vast improvement from setting the moniter gamma lower. In-game is the second setting, set to max resolution, with shadows ect.
I wont speak to lag since it is laggy in towns, but ehh I've never played a beta that wasn't laggy in crowded towns.
Combat is clunky at first, but once you start to get used to the controls it becomes smooth.
A lot of folks try to do much rampant weapons switching. Max a skill and use the secondary as a fall back. If your a rifleman max that first and use your crossbow; dont switch, take your time, take aim and keep firing. Keep eating food to regen your health and use/craft bandages.
Hand and hand with that is ballistics skill. Always be crafting somthing while your playing, you dont need to stand still at a crafting station or even be logged in to craft, just hit the create tab when you have the componants and do whatever you want.
Aim for the head and get a serious first shot out. If your get comfortable with weapon switching, use max distance and if you don't think you can get a second shot off use the time it takes the mob to get to you to hit alt 4 or 5 or 1 and pull out your melee. If you can get a 2nd shot, chances are its dead b4 it gets to you. No offence to anyone but its not that hard.
Melee is hard at 1st becuase mobs dont lock for you like so many games now. Still when you get used to it its fun. Knowing your weapons reach is important and how the mobs move and circle takes the pain out. Hold and press the left mouse button for auto attack with the target rec over the mob. Thats it. You can now move and circle with your wasd keys. A second mob jumps in move back to keep the 2nd from getting to your flank or back, circle and keep moving on 1st protecting your vulnerable flanks.
If all else fails, get a horse. You can shoot from horseback and nothing I've seen ingame can catch one, so kite them.
Character movement and animations are ugly, I agree and hope they fix them. Still you can break dance, so all is not lost.
If you expected somthing that FE isn't; its never going to do anything for you, sorry I really am it sucks. Still thats not the games fault.
Its a pretty deep game and IMHO very enjoyable.

I am enjoying this game myself, its a different turn from the linear theme park mmorpgs. THANK GOD!
Dont get me wrong, I love my dose of WoW clones, but only for a month or two. I will still try out Aion, but I am thinking at this point that FE will keep me more amused since it looks like the social and crafting aspect of the game is there and people are more personal. When I am in a theme park mmo, I feel like I am racing to level cap so I can do end game content. I had enough of this routine for the last 5 years.
I am excited this game has sandbox elements and a skill based system in place. And I am seeing some of my old SWG veterans in game . The graphics in the game are not as bad as people claim, however I got a pretty nice rig and running the game at 1920 x 1080. When you got full detail with shadows on, the game comes to life.
However with the game being in OB stage and packed to the hilt, I am going to keep the graphics down to where its playable.
I am glad there is something different in the mmo gaming scene and not some of the same ole stuff we had for the last 5 years.
It will be a niche game, which is fine by me. I am currently having fun with my guildmates and new friends I have made online in the game.
*Bump
I'm digging it too. You can tell the developers are players themselves. It's not like the other games and takes some getting used to, but once you do it's a blast.
These are good tips. My favorite is turning on the auto fps option. The melee animations in first person mode don't seem to be working properly, but you get used to knowing if your hitting. I've also noticed that you can sniper some mobs. Go intro the crouched position and use ranged weapon. You can hit mobs and they animate the hit but can't locate you to approach. Seems to work best when done from cover (rocks, spider webs, etc.)

I have to agree. I spent the weekend with the open beta, and had a great time. When I saw that it had first person shooter style controls, I almost didn't even download it. I am really glad I did. The combat system really works once you get the hang of it. and it works pretty well in third person, especially for melee, I still find myself switching to first person when I am shooting at anything. It is really nice having a classless system in place, I don't think enough MMO's are willing to take that chance anymore, and with Fallen Earth it really works. The crafting system seems really deep so far, and since it is beta I am experimenting with crafting almost everything. The best part is the crafting system does not require the usual grind. You just get the recipe for what you want gather the ingredients, and click create. You can even stack up a lot of crafting activities before you log out, and they continue in real time while you are gone. This is an independent MMO, and it shows a little bit, but it is still in beta, and is already as polished as some big name games after release. All in all I would recommend it and I think this will become my next MMO when it is released.
Darren pretty much nailed it, here is his blog.

Fallen Earth – Possible Diamond

I’m sick as a dog right now. The only thing worse than a winter cold is a summer cold. Oy…
/sniffle
Anyway, let me try and get something coherent for you all to read with your morning coffee. Fallen Earth. I’ve been playing the beta for about 3-4 days and I honestly don’t know what to think. My first thought is “Eve in the Wastelands”…because that’s how I feel about this game. It is a very different take on MMOs…especially when it comes to crafting and equipment that your character uses. Everything is crafted. Your weapons…your armor…everything. The crafting itself seems to be a real-time system a la Eve as well in that you start a crafting task and a countdown/progress bar is displayed telling you how many minutes/seconds…days(?) it will take to complete the task. Interesting and highly involving due to the fact that you have to scrounge for the components to make anything. The crafting will be this games main draw for most players…even for players who consider themselves “non-crafters”.
Graphics are serviceable but not spectacular and that will turn off the typical “flash in the pan” gamer. Performance is my main concern right now because on my machine I’m getting a consistent 5-10 fps. This machine can handle Fallout 3 at a solid 30+ fps, so I have no idea what is going on with Fallen Earth…but something is wrong in that department.
This game will not be a mainstream hit by any stretch of the imagination simply because it does things too differently. The way it just “puts you out there” will make most MMO gamer’s heads explode…and that is a shame because there is something to this game. Perhaps, in a year or so that will change but this game’s popularity will grow with word of mouth from the grass roots of gaming. It will probably end up in the same category as Eve once was, i.e. a small, dedicated audience who have a potential to steadily grow the title. Which is all good because my sense from talking to the developers a year ago is that they are not looking for insane numbers here.
I have to admit though, when I did see this game at AGC/GDC last year, I kind of just nodded my head and smiled, thinking, “ummmmm…yeah…right guys. Good luck with that.” After having played it I’m going to say that my first impression was incorrect. This game has huge potential to get some legs given the right conditions…I’m just not sure that the right conditions will ever come given the track that MMO gaming is going on.
In the end, I recommend trying this game out, but with a word of caution that this could go either way. Performance is the main issue. Also know that you may not like this game if you are not into games that stray from the expected formula and are “hard to get” out of the box. Hands down though, this beta was head and shoulders above the Champions experience.
D out.
I posted this list in other FE forums ill post it here as MY list of needed improvements
water ditch in monkeytown water is a non interactable mass and its easy to get stuck between the sides of a ditch and the water
travel times overly long (steam train)
costume clothing / clothing toggles
crafting que
radiation barrier defined more obvious,, with rad meter clicker
vehicles need vehicle physics (jumping)
horse population gonna be a problem after release as in 100+ horses standing in oil
repeatable quests not identified
need grenage physics includes the poisons and acids
need shotgun physics not slug
shotgun damage out of wach 410 is the smallest NOT the bigest (12,20,410)
factions are wattery and have no unique contrast.
no player chat channels
no tiered clan bank security
need more player choice in crafting dyeing or other customizations like a blue mororcycle or green berret or spicy chicken (vs normal chicken)
no /follow command
no /drag command
I would have to say even though steam train and shotguns are important to me,, I would have to say the number 1 thing that needs to be addressed is the vehicle physics
some of these have been requested to be addressed months ago.
and a week isnt enough time to get a feel for a game as the other zones are much sparcer and factions limit your quest access getting groups together is rare
proformance is still subpar I am getting about 12 FPS and in this star wars era engine I should be getting at least 20-30+
I am dissapointed to see just another minimalist production MMO plain brown wrapper as it were.
the game is a mixmash of thrown together systems they have costume clothing but use a statclothing system so costume clothing is out the window by about level 5
the grenades they dont work like regular grenades they are kind of a slow motion single target thing and if you miss the grenade does nothing at all
shotguns were a huge dissapointment they are just using the rifle engine so its like a shortranged nonscoped slow rifle not the bugg or zombie killer i was hoping for they didnt even get the order of the shotgun types right just go look at a 410,20ga 12ga from the same skill level just look at the single shot damages,, if you know anything about shotguns you will see this glaring error.
basicly this is a shooter game you scope in on an enemy and try for headshots til he is in melee range then swap to melee weapon till he is dead there are very few if any AOE attacks so its prety much 1 v 1 over and over
PVP combat is quite simplistic gun and knife brawl gets very boring after an hour or so as there are effectivly no special or heavy weapons like mines or flamethrowers or mortars to spice things up,, some vehicles can have machineguns mounted but they are VERY weak and vehicles are bullet magnets with no armor options.
there is a boarder around the zones that is unmarked,, it is lethal radiation you cant see or hear anything just bam your dead and the barrier on the map is useless they need to makr it with bodies or a fence or line or something at least a rad meter clicker sound
oh endgame at 45 you slam into it like a brick wall nothing to do some crafting or pvp.
make a world, not a game, we dont want another game.
