I've been into DAoC since October 2001, as off-and-on as any other game (except World of Warcrap, which I consider the bottom of the gaming barrel really), so I've seen how the game has changed over the years.
Is the game good? Hell yes.
Are the majority of players good? Definitely not.
The players left nowadays tend toward solo play (especially on servers where buff bots are allowed) in the battlegrounds, and elitist group play in the frontier. So unless you're an established, well geared, character at level 50, you're not going to find many groups that are actually any good at PvP. (Personally, I've run with several different "8man guilds", as they're called, but these type of players never last long in the game, in my experience. They get their characters powerleveled to 50, gear up exceptionally well, pvp for a couple weeks, and disappear into the night, often without a word.)
What this means is that in the battlegrounds is that you're often going to find yourself having to fight solo against large numbers of enemy players. On the rare ocassion that you do find a PUG (pick up group, usually the lowest level of skill, ability to work together, and the worst equipment per character), in the battlegrounds or the frontier (at level 50), you can expect them to take a large amount of time to get buffed, and a comparatively small amount of time actually fighting anything before they all die.
If you're not looking for a pvp game, DAoC is even better for you. The game is packed with tons and tons and TONS (did I mention, tons and tons?) of interesting storylines and content. And you're not as likely to be forced to solo in pve situations, as the higher level content does actually require groups. People are even -sometimes- good about helping someone out with the "easier" higher level content too. Head to your chosen realm's capital city, get into a guild, and you'll be much better off on all counts (pvp and pve).
I'd definitely recommend the free trial, especially since they've released all the expansions as freebies.
Until Ywain is released, Devon Cluster is where you'll want to go. (That's any one of the following servers:
Akatsuki
Bedevere
Galahad
Igraine
Iseult
Kay
Lancelot
Morgan
Pellinor
Tristan
I'm playing on the Kay server and chose Albion for a realm because I'm working on maxing out every craft skill level on one character for Albion. (I've already completed that task for Hibernia.)
Keep an eye out for the guy giving away free crafting stuff in Camelot if you choose to play Albion (in Tir na Nog if you play Hibernia), and if some stranger whispers you asking if you want to get powerleveled for free,it's more than likely to be me. I do that kinda stuff a lot, especially when I get bored or am feeling particularly generous. ;-) (DEATH TO MIDGARD AND IT'S PLAYERS! BOOOO!)
Oh, on another related note too, when Ywain is released, I'm expecting that the number of players on that server will skyrocket with many people transfering their characters over.
God only knows if/when Ywain will be released though... Don't believe anything about a release date if it doesn't come off the Camelot Herald. Many players of DAoC will make up all sorts of crap to screw with people and make them look stupid by getting people's hopes up. (It is the player's fault that many people still think "Origins" is coming, when in fact it was "postponed indefinitely" in an official post on the Herald. When we were discussing Origins on the VN forums, I quoted that post directly, and since, the post has mysteriously disappeared from the Herald. It was findable in the search function, but when clicking on the link to the search results, a 404 error (file now found) ensued...)
so are you still gonna be playing or is this the only game you play? if i decide to play i will make a toon on Kay server, and probably a wizard, what is your name on there?
I actually play a handful of games at any given time, most because I get into a lot of closed betas due to the dozens of games I've already participated in closed betas for, and I tend to pay for (at most) one game per month. In August, I paid for Aion (bought the collector's edition after being invited to their closed beta), but September 1st I'm going back to Camelot. (Still have work to do on crafting there, and I've been loving my Reaver.)
I'm currently farting around with Runes of Magic (playing 6 characters at the same time) and Dragonica (playing with my daughter). Runes of Magic is pretty awesome, just don't expect any customer service whatsoever. I've had a problem with one character there, no others, and the customer support people can't fix the character, nor can they figure out what's messed up about it. Of course it's the character I spent $90 over several months. Dragonica is pretty empty, but it's cartoony, so my daughter likes it. Getting from level 1 to 10 on each of the 4 classes in the game, I only saw 2 other players besides my daughter's character.
So if you're looking to hook up with me in DAoC, I'd say wait until September to start your free trial, and go check out Runes of Magic and/or Dragonica. They're both free-to-play games, so it couldn't hurt.
I've been Stormbow in every online game I've gotten my hands on since 1990, so keep an eye out for that name. Most of the time it's me. (It's my scout on Kay in Dark Age of Camelot and it's the name of my Scout/Thief in Runes of Magic.) You can also find me on Vorbot, Vorbott, Vorbottt, Vorbotttt, Vorbottttt, and Vorbotttttt all at the same time in Runes of Magic. (LOL)
well i may just go ahead and do the free trial now due to ive always liked the camelot lore and all that dealings with arthur, merlin and excalibur. I even liked watching the TV show Merlin this year which got me to rethinking about DAOC.

so, do you recommend a yes then to playing DAOC? But what is a good server to play on?
