Free AO

Th0restTh0rest Member Posts: 2

I've played AO 2 years or so ago. After 6 months I found out, that it is very expensive (from my point of view) game. And I see that it is now available free for 1 year, no fees. Did anyone signed up for this free AO yet? And comments?

I played AO for over a year and a half after release.....

It was a good game. Lots of players and a good community. After the expansions the game started to decline so I quit. Now that I see it is going to be free for a year and no expansions It may be worth picking up again. With a buttload of new people all playing in the same areas with new characters it will be like starting from day 1 again.

Sounds like a great time to me and hey its free. What have we got to lose?

Well, we can lose whole year playing a free game, which is good mainly cuz it is free. After a year the game won't be free any more... Those new guys who will start to like in this year will switch over to expansions, the rest will quit. Will you start paying for being alone in "old packaged shit" :) ?

Playing a game of AO's overall quality for free should be considered a blessing, even without the expansions. Everyone bags Shadowlands but i feel it added to the game, the problem was travel within Rubi-Ka and SL when the addon first launched. I cant see how people see it as a problem now though.

I havent played Alien Invasion yet, and i was interested, but then they still havent bothered to fix bugs light years old, nor balance up the professions. The professions in my view havent been balanced for at least a year. I had a trader as my main, and ive visited the boards on and off since ive left, and it seems theyve done nothing to fix traders for 9 months, and even non traders agreed we were gimped. You dont get that kind of consecus too often.

If Funcom put out a class balancing patch than i may very well give the game another look.

its not good enough ...even for free mmorpg

    they have cosmic haha

AO may have Cosmik as a player... I don't know... but I have not seen him among the FC staff in almost 2 years...

And to counter you on that... AO is best, at least as long as you don't start playing it... ;p

I won a boxed version of AO:AI from another website and I played it for 3 days... then I quit. It is too complex for me and because I never played AO before. Maybe I'll go back to AO since it is free image

The free AO (Rubika) was in fact the most fun part of that game. But it turned into a nightmare of quests and camping with Shadowlands. And if you play more than a few weeks, you'll all be gimps without expansions.

When Funcom redid mission before ShadowLands they became MUCH harder (cannons, sentrys ,human mobs using skills).
The excuse was that SL would boost the player (=more skills, new weapons, armors & implants) so much that it wouldnt matter.... Now its free to play without ANY expansion.

Btw the world designer left Funcom 2 months (3?) after SL was out, said he was "moving on" to new challenges.
On http://www.mmogchart.com/Chart5.html you can see AO from having a stable population until in august-03 taking a turn downwards, same time as SL start...

Yes original AO was fun until it went Everquest ::::11::

Lol, you're right, those sentrys could do some nasty damage. If I remember correct Funcom also nerfed outdoor hunting when releasing SL.
And Shadowlands... I think I read the devs were inspired by some Dante's Inferno thinghy, seven levels of hell.

It was the Game Designer not the world designer.
    Guante something.

IF you ask any long time player of AO, they would hate that guy who made the Shadowlands expansion because it totally ruined the game.

Im on the free year thing and i was wondering if you can by the expasion packs and have them work on a free account.

Also what exactly does the expasion have?

If you get shadowlands or any expansion on the free account it will start to
    cost you a monthly fee.

SL brings perks, more levels (20 shadowlevels), some nice new items like perennium weapons
new armor, you can play keepers and shades, and at least to me only into the second playfield some nice change of scenery, the coils/spindles to regen hp/nano i hated at first but now i love them, say with my enf at 4.8k hp, i'm low on hp after a fight, i sit and use one coil(or is it spindle i always forget ::::02:: ) and it will heal me to full over time ::::28::

XP in shadowlands are also a lot nicer then on rubi-ka, but mobs don't drop any credits even though some items can sell rather well.

To me shadowlands where a nice expansion.

I am really having a hard time understanding how anyone could find a negative to a game or pay to play quality giving a year of free playtime before you have to start playing. I just don't understand that one bit. Even if you don't like the game, you have to give Funcom credit on that one.

I'm downloading it as i speak. I'm mainly doing it for summer vacation though since that is really the only time i have a chance to sit down and play. But it should be fun and hopefully better than many of the other mmorpg out.

    SO BORED
