Dunno maybe because I have a streak of luck....Only game I ever bought that was canceled was Earth and Beyond......damn EA for swallowing that game a sinking it!

Yes about Earth and Beyond. Beautiful game and the best community in any game i've played and i've played just about every MMO out there.

Good read. I've heard of a few on the list but was fortunate not to have played any of them.

Would love to see a top 5 of games still going ;)

OMG SWG should be #1.   How can you possibly not list it as #1 just boggles my mind.    Think of the losses SOE took with that game and how it still effects them to this day~!  Also what about the expansion debacle that was tied to the NGE?   Did that warrant enough to make it even that much more of a screwed up mess?

    ::shakes her head::

You're list is sorta weird and I would have chosen differently.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Horizons. I worked for the company during launch and it was freaking horrible to be an employee at that point!

Oh I promise you... it was not a good feeling....   It came in a DVD like case with White sleeving that said "Mourning" in about 16 font on the front.  I was so pissed off I don't think I spoke for like 2 days.  It was horrible.  My poor wife was confused as to why I was so pissed off.  I was an avid supporter of that company.  I prayed and prayed they would amend their ways with that fiasco and release a working client.  Nope.... not our luck..   One day it just up and disappeared and tried the whole rename thing.  We caught wind and flamed the hell out of their boards until they just locked everything.  They fleeced people out of a lot of money.

  • greed0104greed0104 Member Posts: 2,134

DnL lol. Probably the worst "MMO" I have ever tried to play. The client never worked and the tests/players had to constantly unfuck it themselves.

Where this lists come from I'll never know.

Where's Vanguard in this list?  One of the biggest dissapointments ever in an MMO.

Of course Age of Conan has to also be right up there.

makes me wonder if some of you people even read the article. The 2 games you mentioned were playable on launch and turned into pretty decent/good games. The games listed in the article on the other hand were closer to scams. Although i think stradden could have replaced RYL with E&B or AC2. The rest are where i would place them.

    P.S. Lol mourning.

Solid list. However, I would also like to see Stargate Worlds and Mytheon added. Both went so far as to offer "betas" and then suddenly psuedo-vanish, and rise again later.

    -----------------------
Tried- L2, Ryzom, WAR, DDO, PWI, Tab Rasa, Requiem, Champs, AA, JD, PWI, SUN, Dawntide

Played- SWG (pre-cu), AoC, VG, WoW, LoTRO,CoX, EQ2, DAOC, GW, PotBS, Aion, MO,APB, NASA, Fallen Earth, DCUO, Rift

    Playing- EVE, Black Prophecy, TOR

Waiting for- Tera, Jumpgate Evo, WH40K, WWE, WOD, TSW

I'd put SWG up to at least number three, but most likely at number one. I'm no SOE hater either. I loved EQ and had at least three good runs playing the game. I also played SWG off and on over the early years of the game. But to make the changes they did with the player base they had that late in the game (and right after an expansion at that) is somewhere on the border between complete stupidity and a flat out scam.

I agree AC2 should definitely make this list for releasing an expansion just before closing up shop.

Dang, you had to remind me :( I bought the expansion and 2 days later the closing notice was sent.

Hah. I won a lifetime sub through a contest here a month before the announcement.

Don't even get me started on SWG and the NGE... Even years later its still a SORE point.  How those idiots could pull such a bone headed stunt... Oh well, back to the present.

A good runner up for most annoying game would have to be Turbines mangling of Asherons Call 2.  Buggy doesn't even BEGIN to describe that game. At various points they managed to break the combat system, the chat system, the storage system... You name it, they managed to break it.  Server/client stability was a sick joke. This went on for months and months and months.  Then to add the cherry on the top, they closed down the game shortly after they sold all too many of us an expansion.  Its too bad as it could have been a fun game, if they would have hired people who actually knew what in the hell they were doing.

There were a lot of things I loved about AC2, and most of the things I hated about it were Microsoft's fault, not Turbines.

I still miss climbing up the Deru Tree with my pet Lasher 'Stumpy'.

Eve would be on my list. Amazing depth with boring gameplay. Like an alzheimer patient, I play it for two week trial, enjoy it for 4 days, then realize it doesn't get any better. $#$@ me, I want my damn space sim.

Anyway, DAoC and the Trials of Atlantis expansion angered a lot of people. Mythic introduced asinine overpowered abilities with really boring and difficult hoops to jump through to get them. Screw that noise.

Never been burned too bad by an MMO. Here's to hoping CO doesn't turn out to be a flop. I actually enjoy it, but I don't see any of the problems in it that any of the other games have. The only huge $#@$% fest was about the RMT, which only the uninformed seem to be clamouring over now. It's aestetic crap. Even City Of Whatever has them, instead of letting you buy ingame credits using your cash, they let you buy a serial key with a mini expansion. 10 bucks for a little extra crap?

And no one complains about that? Funny how doing the same thing a lot of companies already do, but calling it the "wrong" word, pisses off the nest. Fun article.

(i think i missed a couple regen nerfs as well as other non regen nerfs) by the time Jack was booted out the player base was cut in half, Positron/Matt Miller has done wonders to repair the damage but the Great Tanker Exodus will never be forgotten.

Lol, don't forget (or maybe you weren't around for) the complete PvP revamp of Issue 13.  PvP players were asked to organize a list of issues and bugs that needed fixing.  The list was largely discarded, and instead powers were removed outright, or hit with massive nerfs and/or diminishing returns.

Even the crafted power enhancements sets, recently added to the game, were hit with nerfs, and many powers that people had slotted with the rare enhancement sets were no longer usable in pvp.

Then there was the sync bug with Issue 12 which left thousands of players completely unable to interact with the map.  It was like losing connection to the map server, but you stayed logged in.  You could chat, but that was it.  This lasted for roughly one entire month.

People compared Issue 13 to ED, whatever that was.  It sounded downright nasty, but it occured before my time in the game.  Sounded like a fairly extensive revamp, accompanied by some degree of player exodus.

I would put True Fantasy Live Online up there with one of the biggest upsets of MMO's. Even with it's abandonment on the Xbox it could have had a chance in the PC world.

You see, thats part of the problem. Mickysoft pointed the finger at Turbine, and Turbine pointed the finger at Mickysoft, and it just went on and on that way.  To this day, I doubt anyone who wasn't actually part of one corp or the other really knows who was actually responsible for mangling things so badly. But it WAS Turbines game, so even with Mickysofts long history of epic failures(Windows ME comes to mind...) I still tend to blame Turbine. Not to mention Mickysoft was long out of the picture by the time they launched the AC2 expansion, and then closed down shortly after that.

I remember I played the RYL beta and I think actually played the game for a bit. I liked it at the time, but I was young then. Who knows how it actually was. I remember I had trouble getting straight facts about that whole contest thing. I thought it was like the lottery, not  a PvP contest.  The graphics were pretty good for the time period though. I remember thinking that something else was cool, but I don't really remember what it was. It was a really big grind fest.

  • VexeVexe Member Posts: 549

Oh and Age Of Conan promised a bunch of stuff it didn't deliver on (AKA THE XBOX VERSION) along with things like whole sections of the game almost unpopulated by monsters which made leveling in the game close to impossible. As I recall, guild cities weren't ready at launch either. The game's gotten better though. Weapons and armor meaning more in combat made a big difference.

At least they didn't "release" and take people's money.

As soon as cryptic sold the rights to that game it all went to crap. I remember it was maybe my first MMO...maybe. Maybe even the first game I actually tracked the progress of.

Earth and Beyond... Yeah that was a nice game. I just couldn't justify the price for the content. Abandoned by EA. Awesome customization of things in its day, and XP debt system was the best concept to date.

Hellgate: London... Yeah that was a buggy release. I just couldn't justify the price for the lack of support. Abandoned by EA. Feel sorry for anyone who bought the lifetime subscription. Best part of the game was the intro scene.

Tabula Rasa... Yeah that was an ok game. Neat idea but felt like poorly executed and supported. Best part of the game was the intro scene.

I'm not sure when that first game came out, but XP debt has been in City Of Heros since the start.

And Tabula Rasa Was more immersive than some. The animations were a bit buggy, and the world felt a bit closed-off.
