That makes sense. However, is the 9600 GT really THAT outdated? I didn't think it was, because I could run WoW at about 35 and sometimes up to 60 fps on full graphics. I ran PvP fine. And as for Aion, I beleive it IS a 64-bit game. Also, what I want to know, is how come my friend doesn't have a graphics card as nice as mine, but has a nicer processor, and can run Aion full blast? That's what doesn't make your guys' logic make sense. My graphics card, if it works like my friends, should be fine. Explanation?
It depends on what background programs you are running, which drivers you are running, if they are from the same generation, and from the same type (nVidia and AtI run better or worse for certain games). Simply stating that his is worse, and he is better is difficult to say. Also, if his "worse" card is an 8800gt for example, that card is actually better than yours. Even though it is a generation behind.
And yes, the 9600gt is pretty outdated. Not REALLY bad, I mean, it is still good, but 9800 or equivilent seems to be the norm these days.
So are you comfortable with building the computer yourself?
If your mobo is an AM2+ mobo you are ok with the 9600GT you could simply drop in a Phenom II X4 955 for $200. It seems a waste to me to buy a whole new PC. The 9600GT is sort of a trouble part because it's good enough to not toss but weak enough to justify an upgrade to a 4890 or GTX275 which is why there's some back and forth going on.
My advice would be: Drop in the Phenom II now, wait till late Sept to see what happens with the 5870, then upgrade the video card as well if Aion is having any trouble.
Problem is that right now the only worthy CPU families to buy are corei7 nehalem or c2d wolfdale , the first one offers great performance and long term capabilities but is probably too expansive and will stay that way until AMD learns how to make a CPU , and the second one might begin to show limits depending on how game engines evolve but for Aion anything starting with E8xx is overkill already .
In both case you have to change motherboard and RAM (buying ddr2 in 2009 is a crime imo) and HDD (for the record HDD is what slows down a computer the most , theres no point in using an old 5400rpm or 7200rpm in a new computer) so pretty much a whole computer anyway so you might aswell build one that can run every game on the market (and as shown above it IS possible for around 800$ noadaways which sure wasn't the case in the past)
So for christmas my parents are spotting me a bit of cash, and I'm saving up for the rest. Overall, I can spend about eight hundred dollars on the computer, just the tower, that is. The ONLY thing I'm looking for is a good processor. I've got an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core, and I want an upgrade from that. I've got a Nvidia Ge-Force 9600 GT, so I'm set for the graphics card. What would be a computer in my price range with a powerful processor?
ok your question is vague ,first is 9600 gt after 8800gt or its the agp type card if its an express,i would put 4 gig of ram if you havent , thats it nothing else. im using that as a computer works great not a lot of game can oom that computer ok eq2 can lol.
one suggestion i got ,if you keep that comp and just add ram to 4 gig ,please go to AMD website
and patch the processor ,yes its all automatic ,the problem is amd had made a patch avail in the past but it was buggy and they made a new one avail this year and it makes wonder .if you like the change just pay me a beer when i pass at the space station(grin)
my 2cp....dont buy a new machine if it doesn't have at least a quad core and ddr3 support. Also get at least a 700w power supply and make sure your motherboard has SLI or crossfire support....the nicer machine you get now the longer it'll be before you need another and the better your 3d effects will look
Where are we going??? Why are we in this handbasket??
I definately DON'T need a quad core. I've looked at so many websites... a more powerful dual core will perform better than a less powerful quad core. And on the website, there is only a 3.0 ghz quad core, and a 3.33 ghz dual core.
With that second rig, will I be able to run Aion full blast, in raids and PvP?

His point was to get a motherboard that could be upgraded with a quad core, not necisarrily that you needed to get a quad, or at least that is how I read it. Also, the ghz of a processor is not a clear indicator of processing power, as AMD has proven for years. Anyway, with todays games, a quad core will almost always be worse off than a dual core, because games do not take advantage of the four cores. However, the future will change this.
The AMD 965BE is a better processor. It doesn't overclock as well, but at stock its better and in multi-core applications its better.
This will probably get over your head so to sum up this next section. Buy only a Phenom II or Core i7. There is no benefit of DDR3 over DDR2 unless your motherboard supports triple channel memory. Only the LGA1366 socket uses triple channel memory, not even the upcoming LGA1156 socket will have triple channel. Its gonna have dual channel just like the AM3 boards. Ultimately, the Core 2 line is outdated. Intel deemed it 6 months ago with the release of Core i7 and upcoming release of the Core i5. The competition has also surpassed the performance on the Core 2 line. Considering how technology moves, getting a Core 2 isn't a good investment.
Onto your computer. Don't bother even looking for one now. You won't have the money until December, and in that time things will significantly change. Also don't bother listening to people saying get a 700w PSU and SLI board. Its unnecessary. Most games don't support it, it will just be a money and power sink. Getting a 700w PSU costs $120, getting a 550w PSU costs $50.

Im saying Core 2 is not the way to go. Inbetween now and then, the Core i5 processors are released which is Intel's mid-range parts. Right now in the low and midrange, AMD dominates. It may change before then. Also parts will drop in costs. Like I said earlier in this topic, you should be looking at getting a Core i7 machine because your budget allows for it.
Well looking at the speed of each processor, an i7 doesn't give me enough power as the BE AMD does... I'm getting a custom iBUYPOWER computer. The AMD is much cheaper, and the ghz is higher.

As I had said earlier, the GHZ means nothing. Well, ok, it means something, but simply looking at the Ghz does not tell you anything. Clock cycles, cache, and type of caching also count for a lot. And the i7's are at the top right now.

His is a nVidia 8500 GT.
How about this one?

Spending 870$ on rig to play a game from 2004...
Since you don't listen to any given advice here, I am out too.
Good luck with your purchase.

In that case I thought the one you linked was a solid build.

I would go for that last PC, it has a better Graphic card. every thing else is almost the same for both PC's.

Well, I focus on Aion. So between an AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE or an Intel Core 2 Duo E8600, which would you choose?
The AMD 965BE is a better processor. It doesn't overclock as well, but at stock its better and in multi-core applications its better.

If you did any research on it, you'd notice that it's incredibly overhauled, almost not looking like the old engine.
Alright, so are there any processors that are coming out near that time? And also, are you saying the AMD is the way to go, as is DDR2?

decent building guide.
btw some direct x 11 compatible video cards should be out in a couple months.

look at the 3d mark scores. (scroll down a bit for cpu's)
www.yougamers.com/hardware/stats/3dmark06/priceandperformance/
buying pieces yourself is a lot cheaper than using a custom site like iBUYPOWER.
Personally I would go with a AMD Phenom II X4 955 because it overclocks better and has cheaper motherboard prices.
Well I know it doesn't mean everything, but I'm not going to be multi-tasking.
And I'm not going to build my own, I just don't want to deal with it really.
So should I just wait a few months?
