What I am looking for is a complex pet system in a game with no non-consentual PvP. I have been playing pet classes from way back in EQ when I played a mage, and they are by far my favorite.
Here are some pet systems I have played with, and what I think of them:
- Rappelz: The main pet class (I don't recall the name off-hand) was a lot of fun. I really enjoy havng a lot of options with my pets, and Rappelz has that. The ability to train your pets in a variety of ways is important to me, I don't want my pet to have to be exactly like every other one of it's type.
- Perfect World: I really like the Venomancer pet system. My single biggest problem with it is that you need to play a female. While this might not be a big deal for some, my wife and I both play and we have a tendancy to be together in game as well.
- WoW: A beast specced hunter has some of the elements that appeal to me. One of the biggest things I enjoyed about it was "pet shopping" - going out and finding that perfect skin, or that new ability. Warlocks were a lot more fun in actual play style, though, I enjoy being more of a caster then anything else.
When the pet becomes it's own little minigame, I really like that. Having to raise up your pet like a second character with it's own unique development, then learning to work together as a team.

Vanguard maybe?

Vanguard has a fun to play necro. your pets grows and chages as you lvl. Also your pet can equip items to make you pet stronger and give him new abilities.
AoC Also has a necro with all difrent types of pets and you can controll a bunch of pets at the same time.
Pokemon.
Er... I don't think Tamogachi or Pokemon are really what I am looking for.
I had played Vangaurd quite a while ago, but I never did a great deal with the necro... it ran pretty badly on the system I had then. I may have to give that a relook.
I have never touched AoC, I was of the impression it was pretty buggy and hard to play? Again, I may need to give it a relook.
Thanks for the quick replies!
Aw... it's ok. Full points for posting, though!
In LoTRO, Loremasters have several pets both combat and non-combat. You also don't have to PvP if you don't want to. If you want more info/have questions send me a private message. I can also give you a guest pass.
SWG beast masters could be worth a look. Its nice raising a rancor from a pup to a monster, and its interesting actually *making* the pet from DNA etc. I found it all quite robust.
The best summoner class I've ever played... Summoner in Hellgate London. Unfortunately as FSS is out of business, and Namco owns the rights to it on NA region. Hanbitsoft can't release it for our region (Hanbitsoft being the S. Korean Co. that own's the IP in their respective company.)
But anyways the Hellgate Summoner was probably the most feared for PvP, especially if you have a "Warper+12 - 18 Force Elementals for stunlock). Never ever accept a pvp challenge from a summoner with his mobs summoned in play (yup that's pretty much instant death for you). Your warper would be the main cannon and would "one-hit" kill most Bosses in the game (except for a couple of bosses in Stonehenge) Force Elementals can stunlock almost every mob and every player you might pvp against. There are other elemenalts you can summon and you can have a variety build for all the multiple elemenal effects such as stunlocking, poisoning, igniting, etc..
Another neat thing was that hellgate allowed for Dual Weilding weapons. And what was cool was that you could weild weapons w/ a variety of skills that you might not have put points in. But the weapons would allow you to use those skills (or elementals you didn't put any points in). This gave the player such a huge variety of options and builds to work with.
God I miss Hellgate, it was fun, played fast like and Arcade style, or FPS style feel to it, and it had great character and skill progression that actually made a difference in-game.
Now if only Hanbitsoft and Namco could strike a deal for it to be released in NA region... one could dream
I think they cleared up Vanguards issues by now. The pets were pretty darn good and you could upgrade your main pet with parts and such you scavenged off dead bodies.
AoC purportedly has improved and the pets in the game were fun. Well, except the floating testicles..those were just creepy.
I know Guild Wars is old news, but the Necro is that game was tres fun. Loved the pets.
Champions Online has two "pet" arch-types. The gadgeteer has stationary guns, drones, and others. The sorceror has zombies, demons, angels, etc. They aren't as glorious as they sound though.
Hmm, can't think of others right now
Ether saga online has a very important pet system.
EverQuest 2 has 4 class types that have pets. the two major ones w/ tanking pets are Necros and Conjorers. And the other two are crowd control types illusionist and corcer.
Mabinogi if you don't mind cash shop pets. You can program their AI for any purpose. It is also possible to decline PvP request (both in the option menu for RvR and manually for PvP)
Try Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online. The whole game is basicly built around their pet system, was kinda fun, ends up to be mostly grind, but thats ok, some people like to call it 'PvE'

It r free 2
I miss that game.
They fucked up so much.
"IRL is a pretty upstanding MMO with thousands of classes, a lot of PvP and even some pretty unique emotes and titles you can acquire. Explore that world first, then we'll talk about this virtual one."
Necro from Vanguard is absolutely amazing.... You can graft different weapons to them and as you level your pet will get more graft slots. Also you get minions.. Some are DPS minions some are defensive which will rescue attacks off you.. Great pets.
The Spirit Master in Aion so reminds me of an EQ1 magician... They are a very awesome class from what i have seen so far... Its actually what i plan to play when the game goes live. Even though currently they do have some quirks that need to be worked out.. Such as the pet not being able to fly.. However they do have a pet they can summon which will knock enemy players out of the sky.. Which can actually kill them 8)... SO that at least evens the odds somewhat.
