Wishful thinking? Perhaps, but like previous MMO's led up to the giant, WoW... could Blizzard model a game similar to Tabula Rasa to fit the niche?
Honestly, back when Everquest 2 and World of Warcraft were going to be released near back to back... I thought to myself "Self, how could ANYONE possibly want to play a MMO that's modeled after a RTS game? The graphics were no where near the quality of EQ2! It won't live past a few years of fanboi support." Well... like it or love it, it's the staple for MMO's now and probably for some time past.
Now consider the possibility of combining elements of Tabula Rasa-ish style of play... with Starcraft.
Who would want to see this? Do you think the player base is out there to support another WoW-like giant from Blizzard?

Personally I think World of Starcraft would be absolutely great! Of course they'd have to call it Worlds with the s, cause you would have to be on multiple planets. Three factions though, all which play very different. It could be neat. You could have everything from siege tanks to protoss carriers and so on.
That being said, I don't think they can just make an MMO and slap the starcraft sticker on it. They'd have to build it specifically geared toward the things that make starcraft what it is. It would be very ambitious.
As far as if/when we'll see it? I don't think we'll see it any time soon. While we do know Blizzard is working on a new MMO, they've said it's a new IP, which means nothing we've seen before. Also you've got the fact that they're still working on Starcraft 2 and it looks like they're not gonna have it fully out the door for at least another 3 years if you count the seperate boxes. I think after that they'll be ready to take a break from starcraft.
By then we may very well have Warhammer 40k Online, which could be good. Carbine Studios' secret sci-fi mmo that they're building could be neat too. I think if they ever do have a Worlds of Starcraft, it'll have a lot of competition.

possibly. I don't know if it would be a great move on Blizzard's part to use another existing IP for another MMO. I think it would be better if Blizzard started those creative juices flowing and came up with an entirely new IP with entirely fresh stories that merge perfectly with the gameplay. I probably wouldn't shun a Starcraft MMO. However, I would prefer something new and innovative, not only for gameplay, but also lore.

-That's exactly what I thought of WoW, honestly... but WoW incorporated existing ideas and built upon them to make them their own in most respects. The most recent Expansion reminds me of what happened in Guild Wars with Ascalon. Happy trees and flowers, then boom... post apocalyptic destruction. Not saying it's good or bad, but it was successful. So then what would make a functional World(s) of Starcraft?
Would a player base be happy if they took every gameplay element of WoW, and copied it... and just changed the models of Warcraft with that of Starcraft? Battlegrounds would be fought for actual control of special territories or racial benefits and not just bragging rights? Would there be the "phat lewts", or skill upgrades like in City of Heroes? Skill trees for each race, or advancement systems which became more specific over levels, or you chose your specific class from the start?

starcraft would be great, because you essentially have 3 absolutely different worlds to explore to begin with.
i always wanted to talk to protoss in kotor kinda way.
tbh i don't think any company could (or would want to) support more than 2 MMO's at once and Blizz have already said their 2nd MMO will be a non Blizz IP. I would love to see a World of Starcraft as the lore seemed pretty solid and Blizz is good at making games. That being said i would also love (much more so) to see far more sci-fi AAA titles that use awesome IP's.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Why not call it Starcraft Universe?
Human space marines looks cool especially in frosty blue armor.
I would play it.
"Starcraft Universe" sounds so much better, especially considering that Starcraft doesn't just take place on one world.
I guess it could be done, but I don't think it's in Blizzards interest to make one. It would be cool though. To have a Starcraft MMO with a 3rd person shooter type combat.
Who knows, even though their next MMO is a new franchise, maybe it will have some awesome combat.
...I am still really curious about what that damn MMO is. It's driving me insane to know.
But alas, we have to wait a year for any kind of comfirmation. From what I've heard, it might be unvailed in the 2010 Blizzcon.
Groovy.
Sounds hard to produce, I mean WoW had a world you basicly could copy paste in with mobs and everything, Starcraft would be different as there are Tanks, Goliaths, huge space ships and etc.. how would the class system look like and what enemies and MOBs would you face.
To me this sounds good on the paper but when you really sit down and think about the mechanics it takes another turn. Besides Blizzard making a PvP MMO please? They cant even make a PvE game descently how you expect them to make a game twice as hard.
So long as Blizzard cant copy paste from other games, this wont happen...
worlds? ... a world incorporates everything, it would be like going with the idea of calling it universe of starcraft and then saying oh but we should call it universes of starcraft. Just saying.
Well we probably won't see world of starcraft. Even Blizzard knows that getting people to play the zerg or protoss race would be a bit too much.
But leaks about the new MMO in development at Blizzard suggest it will have a Sci-Fi setting. So in a sense you could get something similar to Starcraft. We will just have to wait and see what Blizzcom announces next year.
Well coming up with a Sci-Fi MMO would make pretty much sense.
As Fantasy and Sci-Fi are completely different genres. This way their 2 MMO's won't directly compete with eachother.
So Blizzard can reach a new and completely different chunk of players with a Sci-Fi MMO.
It would be a " Slam Dunk " and all know it.
Jihad works both ways

Well I remember they were hiring for projectile/trajectory programmers. That is a pretty specific thing to hire a programmer for and not just throw in if you think about the style of MMO's these days. A projectile is usually just grabbing a vector from point A (You) to point B (Target), and maybe applying some simple accuracy randomness to determine if it hits and then maybe adding an arc to the visual. MMO's do not usually have very in depth FPS mechanics or trajectory mechanics.
They won't want to compete with WoW too heavily so they will want something different. This is why I thought it would hands down be a Starcraft MMO with more twitch based 3rd and 1st person action. Then they said that it won't be based off an existing IP so I was clueless. I am pretty sure there will be something a lot different than WoW to not compete too heavily, but rather have fans subbing to both games.
Well, doesn't have to be sci-fi. Could be anything not fantasy. Post-apocalyptic? (does that count as Sci-fi?)
Although I don't see them making a real life type game in the future. If they do, I would be kind of depressed.
Groovy.
Even if one day we see Starcraft Universe, it's gonna be a looooong way of.
As for the unannounced one, I really hope it's SF space opera style game or a post apocalyptic bloodbath.
Ohh, Space Opera.
3rd person shooter mixed with space combat?
Groovy.
Yeah that, but I was talking more about the setting. You know, Swar Wars + Dune type of thing, pew pew + techno magic and larger than life characters with some Star Trek mixed in for variety.
Oh lawd...
They're just in for the money, they better spend time on World of Warcraft, they're just in for stealing other subs.
10 mill subscribers to WOW and soon a 1mill+ subscribers for the other game, first we'll have a lot of fun, after the first expansion we will call the good memories "Vanilla <INSERT NEW BLIZZARD MMO NAME HERE>"
I don't know... it'd sort of be like Aliens vs. Predator. In the days when the game(s) were flourishing, there were always people willing to play them all. Personally I'd love to play Zerg-side.
Regarding WoW, I never thought that an RTS based around humans and orcs would be the crown jewel of MMO's today.
With respect to units in the RTS to RPG, you don't really use naval or aerial units in WoW, though they do play a minor role, much as the units of Starcraft could also do the same thing.
The endgame reasons for playing WoW usually end up in the realms of raids, battlegrounds, or arena. A Starcraft-version wouldn't be out of the realm of imagination or that of probablility.

Could be awsome, but then how should the playstyle be, like Planet Side, or WoW in another skin ?

And how, exactly, would you pull off playing Zerg...a species with no individuality and are all pieces of one gigantic hive mind? (exactly like the Tyranids, which is yet another concept Blizzard ripped off from Games Workshop).
Katsma is Lithuanian for 'he who drinks used douche fluid'.
I would play it, if they give us a true sci-fi setting. Totally.

I'd have a hard time deciding between a Glitterboy+boomgun or a Juicer!

Well gee, how exactly did the Forsaken become playable characters if they were originally under control of the Lich King? Sylvanas Windrunner... Banshee Queen, Dark Lady... ect, Leader of the Playable Forsaken.
Sarah Kerrigan ring a bell? Perhaps her influence over the general zerg thing could constitute a similar thing like with Sylvanas Windrunner for the Forsaken. Part of her human individuality bled over via hivemind control like a virus... allowing individuality with a constant uplink to the hivemind... blah blah blah
There... there's your "plausible" explanation.
