I'd say the closest to a "real mmo" would be runes of magic, which is decent. the only other one i've play'd would be Wizard 101. and its LAME (imo)
Welcome to MMORPG.Com
There is a board for players to find a new game called the LFGame board located HERE
I wrote an article on how to find a new MMORPG game HERE
Also try out the MMORPG Finder where you select what features you want in an MMO and it gives you suggestions of games to look at. The site can be found HERE
Good Luck
P.S. For me...DAOC was the best MMO Iv'e played
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
The best FTP MMO I played was Perfect World.
DAoC was my all time favorite, played it for 5 years straight. In terms of FTP, I'd say either Runes of Magic or Perfect World. Atlantica was also fun for a little bit.
Long Ago - Dark Age of Camelot, Guild Wars
Now - Aion
Looking Forward To - SW: TOR, GW2, FF14
Will Never Touch Again - WoW
Smashed Hopes - Vanguard
Bah... forget about any F2P games. None are free & pretty much all are terribad.
To answer your question, to me, it was FFXI & by a long shot.
- No obvious hamster wheel for gears.
- Group oriented... what an MMO should always be imo.
- Great story
- Enough engaging & fun content to keep you busy for years.
- Not easy mode
- Some great game mechanics: combat skill chain, class change on the same char, having to unlock content with quests & mission, etc...
I never found anything that came close to the fun factor & community of FFXI to this day.
Thats my 2 copper.
In the free category...I'd say Runes of Magic is pretty good. I messed around with Perfect World for a short period just to see what the hype was all about. I'd say its passable for a free MMO also.
Depends on what you are talking about or looking for.
I cannot really recommend a game when I do not know your preference or playstyle. I liked a lot of different games for different reasons. Some do things better than others. The MOST fun I had in a game was SWG before the revamp of the game but, to be honest I was losing interest in the game about the time they did the revamp. Did not do anything to bring me back either.
I really LOVED Vanguard before they revamped it and then released the big pile o stink that was called a game there.
City of Heroes and Villians has the record for the longest Subscription from me. Had too much fun with various people in that game. I am currently looking forward to the CO release which IMO, has everything I liked from CoX and then some.
Fallen Earth is a decent game but, requires a level of commitment that I cannot give. Very crafting oriented but, it streamlines the process into something fun. Not sure about the combat or PvP in it. I hear it has some issues in that category.
AION, looks like a good game if you are basically looking for PvP that is balanaced. Considering there is only a cosmetic difference between the 2 opposing factions. Personally I cannot understand why PvP games do not follow in DAoC format of having 3 factions. It adds more dynamic to the PvP and keeps it from getting stale. Jumpgate used this as well. It just works so much better IMO.
EVE is a visually stunning game and the depth and sheer size of it is beyond imagining. The one issue I have with it is the one thing that most people love. Real time learning of skills. It is a bit overwhelming and a steep learning curve. There is a decent community to help out and you will be behind the vetereans no matter how much time you put into it. Again, another game that requires some time commitment to be competative.
Anything SOE right now is pretty much a ghost town or will be. Scattered fans and diehards of the remaining games are still there. The populations are low but, they are generally the best community as far as being helpfull. They really try to get people interested and liking the game so it will stay alive another day.
WAR, declining in Population. Not getting much good word of mouth. Fun at first and really makes PvP enjoyable but, something about it gets very repetative real quick. Some great things come out of it like Public Quests and so forth. The problem I had with it is in order to make PvP balanced you are extremely dependant upon other players. IMO none of the classes ever felt EPIC or awesome. They are all just , well.... meh.
WoW, well for lack of anything it is just WoW. Could not get into the spirit of this game and I tried for about 6 months. It is not a bad game, I just could not get over the art style. Shallow of me I know but, damn it if ist does not grab your attention then.... why pay for it? I see this game as the EQ replacement that it was. It does somethings better and built upon some of the EQ weaknesses but, to me it is no more than a RAID and LOOT centric game. Which is not something I am that interested in either. I would rather be Dungeon Crawling in small groups over huge groups that take 2 hours to prep for 30 minutes of combat and 3 hours of arguing over drops.
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.
As posted above if it's a game you're looking for then you should go to the LFGame board, however I can answer what the best MMORPG I've ever is: Guild Wars. Theoretically I think EVE is the best game, but I can't stand playing it myself so I'll have to stick to the second best - Guild Wars - since I find that highly enjoyable as well.
