Severely satisfied with the open beta - My problem is of another kind :)

I understand why people have to bash things. In effect what they are trying to do is finding the basis, the arguments, for not doing something, for not playing, i.e. spending countless hours in a game. You need good reason for anything you do in life, but when the consequence of your decision is measured in hours not spend irl, with family, friends and beautiful girls, its all the more understandable.

So, my point in saying that is, dont take the negative posts about Champions Online, or any other game for that matter, too seriously. People are just trying to fight their inner battles.

Now to the real point. I absolutely loved the open beta. I had a wonderful weekend, playing around with various characters. Luckily i made alot up to lvl 8ish, so that when the lvl 40 booster Policeman finally appeared, I could make at least 3 chars at lvl 40. That gave me a great chance to see some of the other possible builds. The depth and complexity of the power "trees" is phenomenal. never before (maybe in AO with the skillpoints) have I seen such a variety in how you can create your own unique Hero.

I kinda think of the 18 archtypes as Talent Trees as in WoW. But where you only have 3 for your chosen class in WoW, you actually have a wooping 18 trees to pick and crosspick from.

I was slaying dummies with my brother, testing out all kinds of crazy builds, some that drained you, and then build you up, using just that right power from that other tree. I havent had this much fun in a game in a long time.

I always hated instancing, but when you come to think of it, the way they have done it i CO, makes it one of the biggest persistant gameworlds out there. You can meet everyone. Even that guy you played with 5 years ago, who you never could play with because, of Geo/server bounderies. Everyone can meet up at any point. Sure you have to wait to join a larger group, but thats a small price to pay, i think, to have access to such a large playerbase.

The one thing about CO that beats any other MMO ive tried, is the fact that you can nearly and almost create just that blend of a hero you want. The hero you wanted to be when readin comic books, you can now play that out. With so much variety, Cryptic has a marvelous engine for unique character building. They did great with COH, they are doing even better now with CO. If for nothing else, this game will still be here 5 years from now, based on the sole fact, that it has the most immersive character generator system on the market.

So whats my problem then? I dont have the time at all to play this game! Id absolutely love to play, but I cant find an argument that will truly convince me to take out time from all the other things i do in life.

But then again, isnt sacrificing alittle bit of your real life ambition, a small price to pay, to finally become the SuperHero of your childhood dreams?

9/10.

Its the cheapest form of Entertainment on the planet. $15 a month is insane for the amount of time you get out of these mmos. Tell me how much fun you can get out of $50 for the game and $15 for a month plus 30 days free. $65 Entertainment bill for 60 days. Take advantage becasue someday in the future it will be pay by the hour and the good ol days will be gone.

It really is the cheapest form of entertainment.  I can't tell you how many thousands of dollars i've saved from playing MMO's...  I used to buy 1-3 games at month at 40-60$ a pop.  I can get a years entertainment for what I got some months for.

Isn't freedom awesome?  It's too bad it doesn't extend much outside of char creation with CO, but the yeah the char creation is a blast.

Last night, I went to an open house where they had all these volunteer opportunities. Kiwanis club, mentoring kids, helping the elderly.

I hate to admit, I really weighed my use of my time for something worthy, versus CO and how that would affect my ability to get into the head-start launch.

    Nice OP.

Yeah, it does sometimes get hard to justify the time.  But I think MMOs like CO and CoX have been designed very well for casual players who don't always have more than an hour's playtime to commit per session.

Then it becomes an inner battle for the player - whether to carry on for another delicious hour, or attend to the family, or see a friend, etc :)

Tbqh, I think MMOs are the most psychologically addictive things on the planet, for some of us (and for all of us, some of the time).  They give pure, unadulterated and intense happiness for short bursts, in a more or less assured way.
