There are no games like original EQ. Nothing, I think I played every available MMORPG out there, apart from very new released/beta (and some of htem i done too) and nothing gets close to the original EQ.

I agree. To this day I still miss EQ and go back every now and then to play. But to be honest the world has gotten too big for the player base, You go through zones and they are mostly empty except for whatever the current Hot zones are. I miss the days of sitting in the commonlands selling my stuff off back before they added traders.
NO GAME today can compare to the grouping that used to talk place in EQ. The games are so solo orientated these days that a lot of people do not even bother with the grouping social aspects of the games anymore. ( I will admit I too get caught up in this with the newer games out there such as Champions and Aion) They make it so that you no longer need a group for most of the content in the game and people get out of the habbit of doing so. Combine that with the fact that a lot of the begining chat systems leave something to be desired (that or it is just the people not wanting to talk in a general chat anymore).
Well enough before I go too much off topic and start ranting.

I never understood the Bazaar and the ruining of the open area markets, although not all servers used Western Commonlands.
That area was just awesome, go there, watch the spam of items, haggle with people, get to know the regular sellers, the guild bank sellers etc, it was like an entirely new aspect of the game that was seperate from fighting. If you were really clever and smart you could go there with a relatively rare item and upgrade via buying and selling.
Never understood the decision to remove that and have Auction houses. Esp when you consider it was player generated....it was Web 2.0 LONG before Web 2.0 became a buzzword, it was completely and utterly created by the players with no tools at all put forward by developers. Why take out something the players created? So silly.
I'd be very interested to see how games with the same core mechanics as EQ1 and pre-cu SWG perform in the current market climate; MMOs (and their players) have changed a hell of a lot in the past 5 years.
I do have one slight worry; if the respective games do fail massively and I happen to be near a sandbox/forced grouping fanatic at the time, their head might pop like a ripe zit and tbh I don't want to get any of it on me.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
You don't miss Everquest, you miss the experience of playing Everquest at the time that you played it.
There is no time machine, and the likely hood of you reliving those experiences and feelings in a new game - whether it has the Everquest name on it or not - is pretty unlikely.
I know the feelings, I can rant on about at least 10 experiences from EQ that I remember in detail and tell you a story about. Can I do that with any other game I've played? Err, not so much.
2 years ago (I think it was that), I even rejoined the Everquest game on the "Progression" server - which actually was quite fun in alot of ways. But it Progressed to fast, Planes of Power with all of it's baggage came along, and I grew out of the game again. What it was really good for was that it brought home that Everquest is done for me.
But I'll never forget the experiences - And I'll not likely ever have other ones that scale to the level of those experiences. Because no game will ever again be designed like EQ was (through PoP). If they released an updated EQ clone graphic wise but kept all of the game play decisions - the game would be reviled and panned many times over.
If they remake the original EverQuest and keep pretty much everything the same from before Luclin and just redo the graphics ( and I mean good looking graphics not playdough characters and a world that lacks artistic direction like in EQ2,) animations, music, etc. Then I'll play. However this is SoE we're talking about. The same company that found it impossible to finish an expansion for EverQuest. I really don't think they're capable of making a good finished game. I can always hope though.
I read there is a project in the works actually called at the moment Everquest - Next
However Everquest had major issues to a lot of nostalgia i feel fo rit also my first MMO..but ..group lists and camp checks ..the birth of elitism ..in a way EQ went from a casual fun adventure ..to a serious full time business of grind and camp..and it would be a step backwards to recreate it as it was then.
I agree group content and the need for guilds is being left behind the main reason I play MMO..but if EQ3 is anything like EQ2 id rather they dont bother...EQ2 in my opinion is why WoW is so sucessful..

LOL .. there is a reason why ebay become popular. It is more convenient. SAME principle applies here. I prefer an auction house 100x than i have to go spam my trades and find a buyer that way.
I was always a SOE fan when I started MMOs with EQ back in 2003. Then I hit the point where I could no longer lvl as I could not find a group....my guild was extremely slow and ultra laid back in that regard. I became frustrated and eventually left for SWG which had been out for only one month...some EQ ppl I knew left for it too.
Boy, EQ floored me as I could not believe you could do all this on a computer...but SWG captured me and held me until SOE ruined it. I was stunned and angered with SOE treatment but by then I had already been looking forward to EQ2.
When EQ2 launched, I was there....but it wasn't. After more than 24 hours with the servers down i decided to try WOW, which launched around the same time. Well, I was again captivated by the pristine look of the NE starting area. I eventually went back to EQ2 and then back to WOW for years...with small breaks for CoH and back to EQ2. (Even tried Vanguard)
All said and done, EQ2 has so much more depth and more to offer...but wow was simple and easy. The graphics, or lack of any armor variety, pushed me away from EQ2 (some of the silly animations as well, like shooting arrows looked like you were throwing sticks in the air, and the combat pose made it look like you had to do number 2.
But, I stuck with WOW as I loved shaman (enhancement) and loved the S2 gear. BUt I hated the developers treatment of the shaman class and how there was always a FOTM class that could dominate nearly everyone. That philosophy continues with Blizzard and they will never change. It is what the kiddies want. A class that is unstoppable....well, shaman have sucked since BC and will continue.....no more WOW for me, ever.
As far as EQ3....I heard before they thought it was a mistake to call EQ2, just that, EQ2. They (SOE) want to get away from the EQ name, but it is a brand name recognizable by many, not sure why they would do that. I would think they would want to distance SOE logo from any future products due to the stupidity of that guy who I won't mention....the one who ruined SWG and the good name of SOE. They should have canned him, if not drawn and quartered him.
But I do hope for an EQ3, with many lessons learned, specifically graphics...lots of options for customization and of course, BEASTLORDS!!!
That would be AWESOME...but like you said, no way will it ever happen, at least not with SOE.
Anyway, looks like SW:TOR is adding player housing.....and crafting. Looks like they are really going for the old SWG folks as well as the WOW kiddies.
I was initially turned off by SW:TOR but it appears they are reading their forums and hearing what ppl have to say....very good indeed. I will actually buy and play the game, initially I wasn't.
There are no games like original EQ. Nothing, I think I played every available MMORPG out there, apart from very new released/beta (and some of htem i done too) and nothing gets close to the original EQ.
True! This is why we are always searching for one like it. We would love a updated one, like the original. Tunnels, trains long boats. paying players for their rides and items. Helping one another! Hidden quests. Epic quests! With out any gold farmers.
the thing with eq2,its just starting to be smoothly playable at max setting on everything since i7 core and window 7
and now they update the shader (delayed to update 54 insteade of 53) wich will be even more cool looking
that being said customizing graphic setting on this game take patience but that where i had the best looking game
armor look so real i could touch it .skin color are weird but then i think its made that way.i had soso result with ground texture color etc it looked like it came from window 98 but then i can only use balanced setting .
EQ's appeal always seemed centered around being too new to MMORPGs to understand how bad it was. For a long time, every time I heard someone talk about EQ1 I would learn about some new way it was terrible and wonder why anyone bothered with it at all (apart from knowing that the answer was there weren't any alternatives.)

Oh yeah I love my beastlord. Hell if they ever added them to EQ2 I would go back to that in a heartbeat.
This is the mentality that is killing the genre and making companies pump out crap games at a fast rate. People are never satisfied with what's there and they always want the next one. EQ and EQII are both still running so play them, don't ask for an EQ3. This is common in every at least decently successfull MMO people start saying "Ok time for the next one".
If they did EQ3, a year into EQ3 there'd be people asking for EQ4 because EQ3 was DX 11 and now there's DX 12 or 13 so clearly it's outdated and we need a new one. Just learn to play what's there and stop needed the newest/prettiest all the time. The same people probably own 5 i-pods because each time a new one came out they had to have it. They probably also paid the intial $600 price tag on the i-phone because it was the newest and coolest.

This is also why we are not playing pacman today or riding the horse drawn coach to work...

Creating another EQ-like game is not about resurrecting 1999 graphics, class design, and interfaces; it is about recreating the challenge and mystery those games had.
And I think those elements are sorely needed in MMO's.

Yeah no kidding. Todays mmo's are not complex at all the social aspect sucks, WoW while not as social as EQ still atleast has people talking and socializing. Try Aion or Champions (and yes I do happen to enjoy the style and gameplay of both) but there is hardly any socializing. I miss the ooc trash talk and such, making new friends. I still have friends I got to know in EQ that i keep in touch with after all these years, even though I do not play the game anymore.

Nah no more elves..
Let's have SWG 2.0 (fat chance unfortunately)...

eq3 = free realms with EQ lore and skins.
would love to see an open world with a skill based system. like SWG of old.
As long as that doucher Smed is running the ship, the game will be utter garbage.
If they hung smed by his nuts and gave it back to brad, that would be a different story.
Can you tell i hate smed?
I agee!
