Have been playing this game for a few months now and it has to be said, it is good fun. The graphics are OK and so is the sound, but what makes it groovy to a certain degree is the combat.
Another positive for this game is that there is no uber mech. Even if you use rl cash and buy NC coin, you still have to know how to use what you have bought. In short you will still get your ass handed to you by a better player no matter how much coin you buy.
In a nutshell you start the game with one mech and through combat you gain cash for parts and your pilot goes up levels and becomes more skilful. At later levels you get extra slots that you can build new mechs in to suit your favourite game arena.
Now it has to be said that all isn't rosy with this game.
The community really bites. I mean it is awful. If you want glitchers, armchair Nazis and emoragequitters then this is the game for you. You will get abuse for over-killing someone, for kill stealing in team games such as Team Deathmatch or Capture the Flag and for kill stealing in Deathmatch. Go figure.
It suffers from the same problems due to the lobby setup in the same way Left 4 Dead (worst community ever!) does. You can join a game only to get booted instantly because your mech was wrong, your level was wrong, your equipment was wrong or you weren't in a clan. Or they just think your a nob.
The idiots that populate this game hate what they call 'coiners'. Coiners are people who have bought equipment with rl cash. Despite what other people have said this does not make you any better than those who use in-game credits. In fact, some of the cash only items are bloody awful and take some skill to get the hang of. Being a coiner will get you kicked from some rooms.
They also seem to forget that coiners pay for the game and without them it wouldn't exist.
The game has purchasable skills that you can hotkey. These are instant combos that do reasonable damage if they land and in the right hands can be chained together or just plain spammed. Utter cack! There is nothing more annoying than fighting a worthy opponent who has practised and become skilled with their mech one minute, only to be ganked by a butt hole who is crap but hits you with three or four skills in sequence, trashing you. It wouldn't be so bad if these idiots mainly used skills as a last resort, but they don't. You can watch them skill someone to death, run away, do it again, rinse, repeat.
Lag is a bitch. Unless your ping is in the green you will have problems with the melee weapons. Just because you swing at a mech with your sword does not mean their hit box is in the same place. You will die loads if you melee with a high ping. The other problem concerns lag teleporters. These people try to play with pings around 300+ which means that a) they glitch the game and b) their mech only appears once every half second or so. A real pain in capture the flag. Shooting ghosts is not fun.
Don't bother with the Exteel forum. Its a shark pool. There are a few posters there with post counts in the thousands who think they are special and they have an entourage of brown nosers who think they speak the word of god. The place seems devoid of independent thought. If one of these idiots (and I do mean idiots,) thinks your post is junk, so will all the other little fanbois and you will be barbecued. I visited the site looking for hints and tips. The arrogance of the posters there makes you gag.
There are bugger all maps. You will be able to play all of them in an evening. They are fit for purpose, its just that there aren't many of them.
On the whole Exteel is an excellent game with hectic combat, an excellent array of mech parts that can be bought for upgrades or whole new mech and a large assortment of weapons to choose from. I recommend it as a bit of light relief.
It suffers from lack of updates (the Korean version is well ahead), lag spikes like nothing else and a community that sucks.

ADDITIONAL:
A new level of asshattery was achieved tonight.
In Exteel you can start your own room. This room has a level allocated to it that you select. It can be for players between levels 1 & 9, 10 & 16 etc so only players of those levels can apply or you can open it to everyone and set it to 'All'.
The latest piece of cack that I got caught in tonight was entering a room marked as 'All' only to have players request that I be kicked because I wasn't of a high enough level. Suffice to say I left.
????????
If they only wanted players of a certain level then why didnt they set it as that unless they just wanted to grief.
Be warned, you need a really thick skin to put up with the douches in this game.
I had no problems dealing with the people in the game from either the 2 closed beta's to it being live.
How did Exteel make it on this site???
The community has gotten much worse over the last 6 months. All of those that were really the big clans and the best players have left because of lack of updates due to aion. The game is a shell of its former self and tbh I can no longer recommend it to anyone til NCsoft decides to actually improve upon the game again.
That sucks, I enjoyed it.
It's still a good fun to play as long as you don't take it seriously and accept the fact that you will have to wade through some crap just to get a game. On good days which are increasingly few you will meet some really excellent players and have a laugh. On bad days, of which there are loads, you will be lucky to find a room you wont get kicked from and you will get grief from pre-pubes in-game.
The best suggestion I can make is join battles in progress or use the 'quick start' option. Bypass the rooms wherever possible.
As for the skill comment aren't all of the fighting or shooting players playing something more constructive? Honestly two moves for the sword and they have the nerve to include a shield as well. For the lobby complaint it's just like any other mainstream shooter with players gametype but no ping though. You're right the L4D matchmaking system is flawed. I have to agree I couldn't complete the tutorial due to lag and actually thought about hosting my own game for a multiplayer session because I noticed the pings were sloppy but then I thought no, I'm smarter than that and won't so I gave the tutorial another shot and still got the lag so I uninstalled. The only defense you really have is it's free and there's still better free games like Runes of Magic. I think more people are playing Quake Live and Battlefield Heroes.
CURRENTLY PLAYING SHAIYA
I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what you're getting at.
As for defending the game, I'm not. I am not shooting it down in flames either. The point I was making was that, as one of the few online Mech games out there it was good fun, but it also has it's flaws.
