DO NOT buy Aion via download!

YunbeiYunbei Member Posts: 898

I am serious. As some friends where so hyped with Aion, I thought WTH not try it out, so I went to the NCSoft story, bought Aion, and ever since all download hell is broken loose.

For once, the launcher tried to download one big 6 GB file, but since I cant let my computer connect for so long, I thought to make a break and continue later. Only to learn, the launcher always restarts ALL OVER at zero when you get interrupted.

Ok, so I tried out Fileplanet. Which did not work, not to much surprise, I never had good experiences with FP. It was basically the same. After 2 Gb the download did not resume for some reasons. As I said, FP never was very reliable IMVPO.

The 2 other links I was told about where not to be continued with Download Managers eithers, and finally the Torrent I got even after two hours still was at 5 kb/s and 2-16 weeks estimated download time. I have zero idea if I will ever be able to download it, or if I have not wasted the money for nothing. Take it as a warning. NCSoft has apparently problems with distributing their game via download. You may be lucky, but you may be not.

My advise: DONT BUY AION via download. Do yourself a favour, be parient and buy the box in the store.

You have been warned.

I'm sorry to hear you had problems downloading the client. I downloaded it off of FP with no problem.

works great for me, sorry you have trouble.

Both fileplanet and Torrents support resuming the file, so you shouldnt have an issue.

I bought Aion via Steam and downloaded the client without a hitch.

  • reyskensjoerreyskensjoer Member Posts: 20

The only experience I have on this subject was: downloading the client using the launcher.

It worked perfectly, though it took about 20 hours to download (was downloading when beta weekend already started).

I've never used File Planet so can't say anything bad or good about them.

Seriously, I know you said you can't connect the computer for that long, but the launcher gave me zero probs.

Sorry can't be of more help though.

I have never had any trouble with the File Planet download manager, or the NCSoft Launcher. Wether it be resuming downloads or otherwise. I do believe that you are a very inexperienced PC user and that the fault is yours.

Downloading it 150 kb/s via torrent, you sure your torrent program is correctly configured?

Can't comment on FilePlanet though. Had no problems with the NC Launcher besides their extremely slow speed.

Tbh, I have ZERO idea how such configurations. I am just a normal guy without tech knowledge. Some tech guru may find ways or issues, but for a normal moral like me, I just see I try it for 5 days straight now, LOTS OF HOURS, and nada.

I am VERY VERY frustrated now as you may imagine.

(Other downloads work, so it is only this Aion thing where for some reason nothing works.)

I bought mine through Steam and had zero issues with download. Sorry you had so many problems.

  • aesperusaesperus Member UncommonPosts: 5,135

I've been able to DL it no problem. The problem isn't the download, so much as the fact that you can't stay online long enough to finish it, from the looks of it.

Since that is the case I'd recommend using steam. Steam stores DLs, similar to a torrent, and picks up right where it left off each time you log on. It has done this with every single game I've bought off of it. I dunno if it's as good as getting it straight from the source, but it should allow you to DL it. If the NC Launcher isn't working for you, then steam would be your next best bet imho.

The launcher is slow as heck- I downloaded Download Accelerator Plus and pulled directly from the 1.2 client upload link on the NCSoft website. It was going at around 700 kb/s and took less than an hour. Now I'm patching from the slow launcher, but it'll be done with the patch before open beta starts, even at 20kb/s of slowness. I saw you had problems with download managers too, but try DAP if you haven't already

Is this the PlayNC launcher or the game launcher?

Have you tried talking to NC support themselves? I suspect their servers are getting hammered right now.

I'd suggest Steam myself, good speeds and you can resume partial downloads.

Remember, it has to be fun to be a game. Grinding is a bedroom activity, and the point is definitely not to do my wife as fast as possible.

Sucks to hear you having so much trouble.

I could have sworn the NCSoft launcher starts the download over from where you left off, though.  It will say you are at 0% if you restart it, but the total amount of data you need to download should be lower.

What I mean is if you download 20% of a 100 MB patch and restart it, you should now be at 0% of an 80 MB patch.  I could be wrong though.

I had no problems downloading from the NCSoft launcher, it just took a few hours (this was before CBT 1).

I have also never had any issues downloading from Fileplanet or using their Download Manager.

Oh well, good luck with your download.

Yeah, they are doing something called "trickle downloading". Because you won't have any use of the files and because of the amount of users that are downloading the patch, they are limiting the download speeds to alleviate issues like server crashes.

Edit: the closer we get to OB, the faster you will notice the patcher go.

like most of these posts i am sorry to hear you had problems.  but IMO if you pay 50-60$ for the game (depending on your preorder ce or not) then y not pay the 6$ for a fileplanet account and get the dl at almost unlimited speed?  i got the full client in about 1.5 hours., then just unsubscribe before the next billing cycle.  It was worth the extra 6 buck to me.

Sucks that you had these issues. I didn't have any issues d/l the game myself.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Being the enterprising young man that I am, I managed to pull the client off of usenet quite a while ago at an average 2mb/s (I love you astraweb). To be honest, I would never buy a game in its physical form anymore - why do that when you can have something perpetually stored in soft format?

I think dameonk and starheart are correct.

You are starting at 0% but that is from what you have left to download. Try it again and see if this is true.

After an abort on mine, it DID restart, and I panicked but then I noticed that after about 5 minutes, it picked up where it left off. I think what it does on an abort is inspect all existing files. So, if it restarts, wait awhile before panicking.

I updated my client from CB to OB via FP and I was getting 1.5 MB's, Took me like 20 min's to DL the 3 GB patch.

Total client size now is 14.2 GB's

NOTE: there are 2 types of clients at FP.  1) CB > OB patch   2) full 1.5v client.

haha...i just left my computer on over night and when i woke up the next morning, it was finished

  • custocusto Member Posts: 28

I used the nclauncher and it would continue my download.  Not sure what your problem might be.  I actually had to continue the download 3 or 4 times and each time it picked up where where it left off.

Hi Yunbei, what web browser are you using? I'm just taking a guess at this but to me it looks like you are using internet explorer to download Aion on FP, I think Internet explorer has a limit to how much it can download. If that's the case try using Firefox and try FP again and if it isn't then I have no clue. It's only a suggestion but hope it works out for you

  • Markn12Markn12 Member Posts: 222

First off FP supports resuming if you install there download manager which works really great.   2nd why should people not buy the download version because 1 pesron had a hard time getting it when 10s of thousands have not ?

Add me to the Steam bandwagon. Theres just something I love about being able to access a lot of my games from any computer simply by logging in steam and downloading the game.

  • FunkyLasagneFunkyLasagne Member Posts: 339

Absolutely no problems here downloaded it from the NC Servers from the EU.  I considered buying through Steam, but the wiki entry for GG lists Steam as one of those services that can cause problems so decided to just bypass that issue.
