In the hopes of promoting the possibility of FF14 voice chat amongst would-be players I am creating this Final Fantasy 14 voice chat opinion poll. I would love to see FF14 would-be players get behind this and show SE we would appreciate it and that it could help tip people teetering on the FF14 fence.
Who wouldn't like to talk to other Final Fantasy 14 players while in game? Now I am not sure how this could be implemented best. Possibly only In-Guild voice chatting, even that would be an amazing feature. I think it could be a huge draw factor, far more then jumping (lol). But they could implement it in other ways, like a certain mile/feet radius in the game you can voice chat with people, or only people on a friend list etc.
Now in terms of difficulty to implement this. I think lots of us are newbs when it comes to the actuall technical development neccesary to make this a reality. But we do know the PS3 has the hardware to do it, as would the PC. SE has stated they think that because due to voice chat not being a standard "everyone has it" feature on either the PC or PS3 platforms they are not considering it. A poster makes this interesting comment
"wth? no in-game voice chatting cause it's not the standard "everyone has?" thats bs! if that were the case not everyone has a keyboard for their ps3 so no keyboards enabled? i seriously believe that if they allow for in game voice chat that consumers/gamers will get headsets. its software moving hardware. the ps3 makes it easy for users to get headsets considering it's nearly universal compatibility w/ bluetooth phone headsets. move into the new gen of games.... just my opinion tho"
I know I have a headset. (PS3 specific too, its prettty and I know it will be completely compatible)
Hows it sounds guys and gals?! You know you want it.
EDIT- Important note. Some people do not know that the PS3 does not allow game chat unless the game you are playing has it built in. So a person playing FF14 would not be able to chat with anyone in game(or out for that matter) unless FF14 made that a function. Not like the Xbox live.

An obvious hurdle would have to be the language-barrier. The game has no region boundaries so we will be playing with people of all different tongues. Listening to that, especially if you don't understand it or someone is being completely obnoxious on purpose, creates a difficulty for the radius option. Within linkshell wouldn't be bad, but you can always use Vent or your favorite TS.
Not a feature I'm overly concerned with to be honest.
I would much rather have them improve the universal chat system they had in XI by leaps and bounds. Overcoming the language barrier is something that I think is beyond amazing for a gaming experience.
Edit: Because of this, I voted no.
@ The Starheart, I dont think PS3 has Vent, I think that is a PC thing as are most of the voice chat programs available. I think alot of PC gamers will vote no to the poll because for them they don't need the Voice chat they can use a third party(if ff14 allows a program like that to run while the game is, im sure they will). However If the PC gamers have PS3 friends in their guild it'd be awesome to be able to talk to them.
In terms of the language barrier, text chatting will always be there. But this would actually HELP a lot of the people I met online who used the FF11 game to LEARN english better.
The radius idea was/is kind of junk.
Its too bad that alot of PC gamers will probably vote no. But I want this poll to reflect all FF14 players opinions, so that we can get a sense of whether SE had their finger on it.

Why would ps3 need vent if FFXIV had voice chat built in game?

If I wanted to talk to people, I wouldn't be playing a mmo, instead I'd go out and hang with my friends. I voted no.
PS3 is going to be able to utilize a mouse and keyboard, I would still prefer to see people cross the language barrier that way. And I don't know much about the PS3 but I figured they would have a voice integration similar to XBL where you can speak with your friends over it. I didn't know they were behind in that department.
I don't understand what you mean by making people learn english better, why does it have to be people learning english rather than you learning Japanese, Chinese, German, or whatever the language is?
Edit: I think I understand now, you mean people who wished to improve their english? (inflections, pronunciation, etc)
My language barrier concerns are for those who only know one language and aren't learning others.
I don't understand your question Toddze. FF14 for the PS3 does not have voice chat as of yet, and is not slated to. Nor does it have Vent. I do no think Vent works with PS3.
I would like to have something like Vent work on PS3 while playing FF14 , but I dont think thats a possibility.
So my question was whether people would like to see Voice Chat created in FF14. As The starheart explained PC gamers have many third party options. My opinion is that, one in game option allowing for In-Guild chatting, would be amazing.
Again this is just an opinion poll, hehe, I will be playing FF14 for sure, and I have a group of about 12 people in RL ready to play with me. Most of whom I know personally and could call if I needed to hear their voice :P

what are you talking about? PS3 has chat, PS3 has video chat. You can create a chat room with your friends on friend list in the PS3 and chat away. I curently have a blue tooth headset connected to my Ps3. I can chat in games such as CoD and various other games that support online voice chat. You really have no idea what your talking about.

I got the feeling that it's just because we were in disagreement with him. All of the platforms that FFXIV is being developed on has the ability for friends to voice chat with each other.
I know that you can't voice chat PC<>360<>PS3 but that's what the text is there for. And again with each system having their own voice software I don't see the need for them to focus on it when they can make text that will be understood across all languages and platforms.
Again, this is my opinion, so if they do or don't do it it's not a big deal to me. I'm still playing regardless.
That seems strangley contradictory to me. Do you by any chance play Darkfall? :P jk To each his own
@ The Starheart
You are correct Xbox Live has a HUGE one up on PS3 in that in PS3 you can only talk in game, in games that allow it, to people playing the same game. My friend told me about Xbox Lives ability to talk to all your friends while playing any game(or none?). Thats a sweet option. Wonder is PS3 could implement that.... might have to go to the playstation forums and try and start a movement there :P
I agree that learning another language has its benefits, however, it can be extremely difficult for some people, who have to work hard to pay there bills and don't have the time to devote to learning and practicing that language.
And yes, there were many people who told me- as I had many friends from non english speaking countries- that after years of playing FF11 they actually ended up learning a lot of English... One friend said he knew next to no English, only Japanese and a few english words, yet he was able to carry on conversations with me after around 5 years.

If FFXIV has a voice chat program built in the game there is no reason that PS3 360 PC all could chat together. Thats like saying PC, PS3 cant type to each other.
But all of this is a mute point since I highly doubt that FFXIV will have a voice chat program built in game.

@ toddze, you were very quick to reply, before I could even edit what i was saying.
PS3 has chat. Only in game chat it suports is for games that have in game chat available. FF14 does not have plans to have in game chat. hence this poll.

I'm aware if they had the program to do it they could, but that's what this thread is about...and my post was talking from the viewpoint of my "no" vote, lol.
I have never tried to create a ps3 chat room with my friends and boot up a ps3 game to see if you can actually stay in the chat room while playing a game. Maybe someone out there can verify this.

1) It makes things easier
2) Why not have more options?
3) You can get to know people on a more personal level thus making the FF community stronger.

Voted no. And I wont join a Linkshell that mandates one Either. If your not good enough to play the game W/O someone baby sitting you you need to go to a diffrent game.

So far the reasons people do not want voice chat are really interesting. Thank you all for your responses.
I really do not see it being a negative nor babying feature to be able to talk to your friends in your guild, or however else it might be developed. But thank you guys all the same

I don't give a rats behind either way but I voted no. Personally I will be using vent/TS like I did when playing FFXI and I had the PS2 version. Most people today have some form of a PC in thier house wether it be Mac, PC, or a netbook/laptop. Vent/TS doesn't take the cutting edge on computer technology to work. I understand that some people only have 1 PC in thier home and its a family PC but if you can afford a PS3 you can afford to have atleast 2 PC in home. I do hope they impliment something for PS3 via PSN to be able to chat in game with people on PS3, not sure if they have it now haven't turned on my PS3 in months.
Nerd rage and buckets of QQ dominate all the vent/ and TS channels I have ever been in.
It totally ruins my immersion, it's the last thing I need to listen to after a long day at school/work/ whatever....
typing in the chat box and using auto translate function worked great for me in xi, and would accept it with open
arms in xiv.
lol I see your point. I myself have never experienced the nerd rage but from seeing you tube videos I can understand why you prefer chat box.
I voted 'No', simply because i'd rather them spend their time on other things. I always chat to friends while playing games but I do it using vent/skype, i'm not really interested in anything too fancy with in-game voice chat, although if the feature is there and it works well i'm not going to complain.
From what i've seen so far the voice chat on PS3 is terrible and I don't even bother with it. When i'm playing ps3 I'm signed into skype or vent on my pc as the sound is so much better.
Obviously it's my personal opinion and as there's no real benefit to me so it's understandable that i'm not bothered about it. I can see why other people would want them to work on this though (i.e. people with a ps3 who don't have easy access to a pc/laptop to run skype),
I'd be for an in-game chat system if folks actually RP'd a bit. But all the in-game chat system activity I have ever experienced in MMO's is either giggly teenagers spouting off about their real world lives or raid leaders handing out orders like some football coach in the Super Bowl.
I'll stick with typing.
Thats not a vent/ts problem!
Have you ever thought that maybe your in the wrong guild? Or that maybe you need to cut some members from the guild? In raid situation voice chat is by far superior.
