It is a sad state of world health, when you can "play a sport" in the comfort of a Lazyboy.

It's also a sad state of fandom, when you can take time off of your game on a tv, to watch others play it on a tv, on a sports channel.

    -----------------------
Tried- L2, Ryzom, WAR, DDO, PWI, Tab Rasa, Requiem, Champs, AA, JD, PWI, SUN, Dawntide

Played- SWG (pre-cu), AoC, VG, WoW, LoTRO,CoX, EQ2, DAOC, GW, PotBS, Aion, MO,APB, NASA, Fallen Earth, DCUO, Rift

    Playing- EVE, Black Prophecy, TOR

Waiting for- Tera, Jumpgate Evo, WH40K, WWE, WOD, TSW

People actually like to watch other people play video games?

I like to play them but to watch other people play? I just can't see it.

  • EthianEthian Member Posts: 1,216

Good god...this post does nothing but push me further away from WoW if anything. PvPs alright in WoW but come on...seriously?? I can think of 2-3 other MMOs I'd much rather spend my time playing.

awesome blizzard, now warcraft is a professional e sport now. Now who says blizzard's pvp sucked? It is officially mainstream pvp now. Congrates to blizzard for becoming the first mmorpg to become professional e sport in the world of professional sports and the world.

    It does suck.

  • The fact that some of you think that this is such a milestone shows how much ignorance floats on the internet.  The WCG has been on PPV on direct tv for at least 3 years now.  Plus MLG has a segment that is sponsored by espn top ten plays.

Besides, it probably wont last long, because the only thing more boring that watch golf, is watching someone else play a video game.  Some clips and motages are cool, but full matches with anouncers is really boring.

Also since most of you know the names Walshy, Ogre 1 and 2, Fatal1ty, as well as others shows how mainstream other video games have become.

Haha, are you seriously comparing WoW to Starcraft and Quake? And have you seen any real 3on3 games? like the Finals of the big Arena tournaments? If you cant see that skill that those people have thats prolly cause you dont know anything about WoW to begin with and prolly shouldnt comment on it.

    Playing: CO, C&C and WoW.
Played: Tabula Rasa, AoC, War, Aion.
    Regret Playing: Hellgate: London, EVE.

    According to dictionary.com

    sport

    –noun

diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime. (3rd definition)

Anything competitive can be considered a sport, it just so happens its ALSO a word to describe a more physical genre of competition.

  • djazzydjazzy Member Posts: 3,578

They also show tons of high stakes poker games, truck pulling competitions, fishing, even spelling bees. I don't think it's that big of a deal. But like watching those activities I just can't see watching a video game on tv, I guess you really have to be into it..

WoW's PvP is crap in my opinion:

"Jump, Spin, Mash 1, Mash 3, Mash 9, Run, Jump, Mash 4, Spam "lolololol pwned!111!!!" in chat"

Sorry, I just don't like it much, I know others do. Now, I do think this should not, in any way, be an E-Sport. Unreal Tournament, that's a game that deserves to be an e-sport. Battlefield, Halo, Counter Strike, etc. I think you get the drift, a game where one player cannot be better than another because they have 'moar phat l337 lootz". The only deciding factor is:

    Knowledge of the game

    Skill on the game

If it's being played over the internet, the player's computer system can also help or hinder him. But, at least his +9 Soulbound Dragonscale Plate Chest with a +70 Strength isn't what is letting him win.

And video games can be competitive sports, there's no doubt about that look at games like Quake Arena, Unreal Tournament, and Warsaw that are dedicated to competive play between players. Look at E-Sports in general, there's legues and thousands of players.

I disagree with this. Maybe WoW PVP has gained a somewhat unexpected (and perhaps undeserved) place in E-sport, but I doubt that it would drive people away due to the game being mainstream.  The game has 11 million subscribers and is propably making more money than any other game i video gaming history, I do believe its safe to call WoW as Mainstream as it gets. the only way to make it more mainstream is to use it in the educational system, in some weird way.

You can say whatever you want, but I do believe that the people that left the game due to it becoming mainstream has already left. You could possibly debate that this would draw in additional players, which would drive som old players away because of "overcrowded-ness" or too many noobs.. but that would be a small number (compared to the entire playerbase)

Yep. Nowhere else have I heard about someone becoming top in the arena by multiboxing 4 shamans, all elemental, and focus-firing instant and 100% crit chain-lightnings, guaranteed to kill whoever they hit, with a second person playing a resto shaman.

Oh! Or the whole "adding in an untested and highly flawed ghost rating system in the middle of the season", yeah, totally. Cause golf so totally did that with par, and football with field goals.

Yeah, definitely fair and 100% fun PvP at its highest.

Arena was the single most horrid idea Blizzard has had, I've seen specs nerfed to hell and back and ruining their PvE dps or utilities because Blizzard doesn't want to make skill effects separate between PvE and PvP, which honestly, is the only way to make it fair. Hell, Warhammer made tanks usefull in PvP, so how is it Blizz can't do it when they themselves are infamous for copy&pasting other game's ideas and polishing them a little?

I play WoW, I enjoy playing it, but I hate PvP, at least arena, battlegrounds is the only thing that isn't overrun by overpowered RMPS, cleaves, whatever... and finally, FINALLY, Blizz realised it, and is giving us Rated Battlegrounds that are fair in its system, unless they change it to be like the arena system. It was a horrible idea to force casual BG'ers to have to do arena just to get some pvp gear. They are the ones choosing to grind out that 50-75k honor and the badges instead of 1-2k arena points, so why force them into the arena just to work to get a rating.

Doesn't matter that the tournaments are played on premade characters.  The fact is that EVERYONE plays on grinded characters on live servers.  Noone is going to just play WoW only at tournaments.   In order to compete in WoW you must level, grind, farm, raid for best in slots, before you can begin actually practicing the part that matters.  Compare this to other "esports" games where EVERYONE goes right to the meat and potatoes of what matters upon logging in, no matter if you're a new player or oldschool.   You install, you load it up, and you go straight to the competition.

As far as WoW taking skill, it takes a tremendous amount of skill to play in the arenas at a high level.  It's rather boring to watch due to the fact that you rarely ever have come backs in a single match.  One person dies, the match is over 90% of the time.  In addition, it's really hard to see what is going on unless you're a WoW player.

WoW is an MMORPG (pve, raids, gear heavy, grinding, farming) decisions on nerfs and buffs are made outside of the arenas, and pvp, ultimately effecting classes, compositions that would or did work in the arena.  If the MLG ever decided to drop this game, and trust me if the numbers start to dwindle they will, ESPN will not be showing other WoW tournaments.  They have a deal with ESPN, and that is the only reason why you see WoW on there.

Put it this way, WoW wasn't the game to put MLG where they are, it wasn't the game that got them a deal with ESPN either.  It's not the game that gets the most views.  That game is and always will be Halo.

If the MLG ever decided to drop this game, and trust me if the numbers start to dwindle they will, ESPN will not be showing other tournaments.  They have a deal with ESPN, and that is the only reason why you see WoW on there.

How is that difrent from any other sports? You dont think that the companys who pay to air Football and so on would stop to do so if the number of people watching it went down drastically.

And that they have a deal with ESPN, do you think WoW is the only game or sport or whatever you want to call it that has deals? Do you think that other sports etc just magically start to air on TV or have their own tournaments? I guess you think that magical gnomes jump out of the ground to host tournaments and give price money etc?

So funny to read laughing irl sometimes.

Put it this way, WoW wasn't the game to put MLG where they are, it wasn't the game that got them a deal with ESPN either.  It's not the game that gets the most views.  That game is and always will be Halo.

Ohh so the only sports that should count as a sport are the once that are first? So lets say that tennis would have been the first sport to be aired on whatever channel then football wouldnt really be a sport even if it has most viewers today? I dont follow=P

Or have you gone far off topic now?

I don't expect you to follow.  Just as long as you know that the only people that care about WoW as an esport are WoW players.

And people who like football have prolly played it at some point=P What does it have to do with anything, doubt that the WoW players that watch it and there are quite alot of those dont care if there are others that dont play WoW that care about it as much as they do. So dont really see what you are trying to prove.
