I cant find a game.
I value individual player housing (non instanced), PvP (the more open the better), a game that appeals to both the casual gamer (I work full time, have a family) and the hardcore (I dont want it to be lollipop land), as well as fantastic music, decent graphics and some sort of stable player base.
Dark Fall offers some of this, as does SWG......but dont want to go back down those roads as of yet.
Any ideas?

Have you tried lord of the rings online? Has everything you just mentioned, but if u want pvp it won't be 4 you. If you can live without pvp thats my sugestion.

Vanguard on a PvP server?
if your patient ,EVE ONLINE (space sci-fi tho)for me i began playing for the first time eq2 and i love it.
i know other but its mostly kidy lol,
FREE REALM (grin)
ps:eq2= everquest 2
It's in development, but you might want to check out Mortal Online.
Will be full loot pvp though, so that might be too hardcore, who knows.
We should start a club, I think there are a lot of us.
I have played a ton of MMOs, forgive me for not adding that.
EVE = awesome, lack of avatars is an issue, the PvP time/isk sink is a pain, and no real player housing that is attainable for an old fart like me
LotRO = Awesome, though is a PvE game. I really thought it had instance player housing though? I need some sort of PvP that would give me the feeling that the world was real, and at some point you canbe killed or attacked by another player. It doesnt have to be live EVE or Dark Fall PvP, even WoW or AoC PvP is fine....but somthing. Monster Play just doesnt cut it simply because no one plays as a monster anymore.
That is EXACTLY what I had thought....but when I looked into it....the PvP servers are a ghost town apparently.....kinda sux, I would love to play there.
Here is an odd question, what about Everquest? THe first one. I may be the only guy that has played MMORPGs for over a decade....but NOT EQ.
Just added RMT to the everquest series, not sure if you are morally against that.
Same boat here too.
Played most of the games on the market and honestly over the past couple of years no game has held my interest more than 2-3 Months. Sad.
M59 and UO I played for about a year. EQ I played for 4 years. Daoc was another 4 years.
Now true back in the UO/EQ days there was'ent alot else around to play .. but Daoc managed to hold my interest for 4 years too and the market was really expanding then. These days most MMORPGs are a stop gap that'll last a couple of months at best.
I've been playing LotRO recently and its gotten thin. Theres a real lack of end-game unless you are an alt's kinda person (Which I am not) Great game and held my interest for 3 months .. guess I'm just looking for more? ya'know?
Still desperatly looking and even concidering another flirt with EQ2 (that'll last me a couple of months tops)
sigh i hear ya, i just got aion, which im gonna play even though its not really that interesting to me. It fills alot of ur req. except for the housing thing. Personnally im just repeating "kotor, kotor, kotor" for the next year or so. though ffXIV looks good too
those of us "in the same boat" really oughta find a game and play together.....somthing.....
I have debated EQ, even going back to freakin SWG......EQ2 for me would need to be on a PvP type server......Vanguard would be perfect, if not for the ghost town of a populace on the PvP server.
*sighs*
Will just keep floating, treading water.....getting old
I'm also awaiting aion since its about the closest thing to DAoC that actually has players, its not perfect, but unless mortal online is flawless, it'll probably be the best thing out for me for a while.
Man, I'm considering going back to SWG as well, i probably won't but w/e.
Anywhoo... I've been paying WoW on a Normal server with some RL friends, it's alright when you have people you know with ya.
Let's hope something is found, otherwise i'll be stuck in this WoW- Fable 2 alternation forever.
Though i will be playing MH:tri once it's localized. (which i realize isn't an MMO)
Since when did the 30's make people old..? lol
I'll be playing SUN online when it comes out from ijji. If you look at the videos of it on youtube you may figure out why 8 )

Quit frankly I think your list of prerequisites are a bit steep.
Just the non-instanced housing makes a very very very very very short list of options. Mix in PvP and the desire for open world..and you have less than a handful. Final nail..decent graphics...oye...
Besides Vanguard on a PvP server (admittedly low pop) I'd think EQ2 on a PvP server.
The housing is indeed instanced in EQ2 but I think it's a rather developed concept in that game. It's actually located in the normal towns amongst the regular stuff (hated having to travel to housing in lotro(and yea i know there was recall))
SUN (Soul of the Ultimate Nation) is a f2p asian game. It has PvP areas, no housing that I know of, and is definitely casual friendly.
I too am an old guy. I play Vanguard! There ain't much pvp on my pve server Seradon (pvp servers suck) I play Vanguard! All the rest of the current crap sucks. I play Vanguard! If it wasn't for Vanguard I would not play ANY mmo at all. I would play Half-Life 2. I play Vanguard! Vanguard should be the top MMO in the world but SOE are evidently a bunch of dumbasses and would not know a goldmine if it fell in thier lap. I play Vanguard!
End of transmission.......................................................
Whew, those two right there blow most out of the water. The "in thing" at the moment is dumbing down for a larger audience. The best of the hardcore games are older, and having troubles managing populations.
That's going to be tough.

One man, a small pile of money, and the screwball idea of a DIY Indie MMORPG? Yep, that's him. ~sigh~
I think im might see if I can stomic champions online for a few months. Dont really know anything ealse to try.

I've been feeling this same way for awhile lately. Champions during CB was great, but played through all the content before launch so I was mostly burnt out on that, plus the PvP was bad.
Restarted guild wars, and noticed alot of changes to skills and classes, which is good, but now i feel like I have to relearn everything....
Eve isn't my bag either.... vanguard is good as a PvE game....
WAR is great through the entire game until you hit tier 4 which is endgame...
So, my answer has been to play console games and FPS's. Just got done with batman arkham asylum... and it was the most fun I've had playing a game in a long time... but single player games aren't made for the endurance of an MMO player so you can tend to run through those fairly quickly. Lets hope theres some good stuff coming on the horizon.
Only open world pvp with non instanced housing at the moment is Darkfall - while the concept is great, the game is truely one of the worst implementations I have seen.
Fallen Earth may work for you, its in open beta so you can give it a go - has pvp zones/towns and I'm not 100% sure on the player housing, but as it has FPS style aiming it requires patience and a little more skill than others which will probably suit us 30+ gamers more so. Down side is a very bland brown and beige looking world.
