If u don't know what an MMO(RPG) is, then i suggest u check wiki for it.
"Massively multiplayer online role-playing game (commonly abbreviated MMORPG) is a genre of computer role-playing games in which a very large number of players interact with one another within a virtual game world. As in all RPGs, players assume the role of a fictional character (often in a fantasy world), and take control over many of that character's actions. MMORPGs are distinguished from single-player or small multi-player RPGs by the number of players, and by the game's persistent world, usually hosted by the game's publisher, which continues to exist and evolve while the player is away from the game."
If u read that, then u know that Guild Wars has all of that aspects. If u don't like it, then go back to your Playstation and shut up. Sure, it does some things differently, but does that mean it isn't an mmorpg? There are plenty of ppl who don't like WoW , and prefer the GW system. It doesnt have 5 million players for nothing, u know... I just can't stand it when ppl are just making these useless threads for a game they don't even like (?) and flame them. Does it bother you that other ppl like other games than the ones u like?
I loved GW because of the low level cap. I know most of you don't have a job and have loads of time on your hands, but some of us actually work and only get a couple hours a day free to play....
below is taken from the FAQ from the official site
Will Guild Wars 2 be an MMO?
Yes. Guild Wars 2 provides a massive, online persistent world.
How is Guild Wars 2 different from other MMOs?
While Guild Wars 2 adds a persistent-world experience, it retains the unique characteristics of the original game, including strong narrative, extensive instanced gameplay, anti-grind design philosophy, and strong support for competitive play.
and yes its a rpg too , as in diffrent classes = a.k.a. role u play in a persistant world
why is the hype of this game so high ?. .its not even an mmo, and there is almost 0 information about this game yet..
GW2 will be like typical MMO - with persistent seamless world.

I hardly hear anything about it, doesn't seem like much hype to me...
Expectations are high for a reason though. ArenaNet came out of nowhere and made an awesome, revolutionary game (payment model and PvP/Arena focus). Through the expansions, they continued to make it an even better game.
Now with open worlds, new ideas, better technology, more experience, and ncSoft refocusing on AAA titles and pouring money into GW2, it's almost certain that GW2 will be a great game.
yep your right, arenanet was probably laughed at when they proposed their model to ncsoft
but gw1 is their succes and it was a big succes,so now with the full might of ncsoft behind them not just a half-assed effort
we will get an sawsome game from arenanet
why im so obviously seperating arenanet from ncsoft
try arenanet game then try lineage 2 or aion
in my view gw(arenanet)is a better game then ncsoft game )hell its what 3 years old 4 years. aion is bran new.
i do hope arenanet, give us world pvp ,blizzard would hear none of it when they released wow
in my view world pvp would be nice,as long as the gankers get a debuff auto
that isnt applied on one condition,i f your doing a pvp quest ,but only untill you killed the pvp you needed then you become a ganker again(debuffed to 50% attack power ,50% of your normal health
First, Guildwars2 will be an MMORPG. It will have a Persistant world, multiple classes and races to role play, world vs world massive PVP, Guild vs Guild PVP, quests, dungeons, and as mentioned by developers, other things to do that are not combat related.
From their description, You will be able to hang out chatting with friends in the persistant world doing other things as well as fight along side them , or with them in battle if you so choose.
I do not think this game is overhyped, if anything, it is under hyped. Why Am I so hyped about this game? First off we have a quality game being presented to us from the creators of Battlenet. Arena Net has taken a different approach to their games than most companies, by actually using player feedback to create their game. They listened to what the players said they wanted from playing Guild Wars 1 and are implementing those things in Guild wars2. This is a company that ACTUALLY puts players first. Yes, they are for real. Instead of overcharging players, they instead gave real cash prizes and no monthly subs. Who else brings quality like that and real player rewards to gamers without charging a monthly fee?!
Guild wars 1 was their first attempt at anything remotely like an mmo, and it was an excellent game. Beautifully done, thought out quests, great storyline, most balanced pvp I have seen in the industry. They accomplished something with Guildwars that I had not seen in the industry, they presented a polished amazing game without the monthly subs that gave players the choice of jumping right in to play, or working their way through the quests and PVE content. You never had to do a quest if you chose not to. It was not heavily based on items or combat lvls, instead based on real strategy and real player ability. Every class could be played well if you knew what you were doing, unlike most games where one class is overpowered and there is no point in being any other class long term in the game.
I am excited about the world vs world pvp that is the mists where any or all players on one world will battle another world for resources for that world. Their implementation of their new event system that is determined by what the players do on the world is going to be really amazing! From the way they explained it, if players kill all of the centaurs on the world, for example the centaurs will not lead an assault on the player fortifications, but if the players do not kill enough centaurs, the centaurs will not only attack their fortifications, they will then continue to take them over and hold the fort unless players stop them, and none of the regular NPCs from that fortification will return until the players themselves actually mount an attack and retake the fortification.
This type of player driven event system is exactly what games need right now., this will make the " predictable persistant world" more unpredictable, and will allow for players to actually affect what happens in the game itself. The problem with most MMORPGS is the predictability, and if they accomplish what they are setting out to do here with this game it will definately change that.
For Arena Net to bring us a polished, solid game with multiple PVP and PVE features as well as combat and noncombat activities without Monthly subs and a player interactive persistant world with a great storyline and questing system is amazing. I think this game deserves a high hype rating, and I am confident that they are one of the only ones in the industry that could even pull something like this off.
For those of us that have been following this game since prior to the postponement of the 2008 Beta, we have good reason to be excited about this game. If they pull this off, they could set a new standard in MMORPGS. With Arena Net, you actually get MORE than you pay for, in terms of quality, service, and enjoyable gameplay. Their customer service was the best I have ever receievd in the industry, and they do not even charge you monthly for it!
Just when I thought people couldn't get any dumber, the internet proves me wrong again.
The hype on GW2 is so high because GW1 was an amazing game. Guild Wars is, in my opinion, still the best MMORPG available, it's free to play after buying the box, isn't a grindfest, and has a unique and genuinely awesome skill system. If Guild Wars 2 is anything like GW1, with the addition of a persistent world, it will be an amazing game. If anything, I would argue that this game is under hyped. I think this game will be much better than the other top hype contenders.
The real question is, why do you care about the GW2 hype?
Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike Loved: Star Wars Galaxies Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.
Well alot of the higher ups at blizzard that made WoW left blizzard and created arena net. So we have the producers that was behind the original WoW on this. Nuff said.
yeah because wow is the best game ever... seriosly..
Not an MMo wow...Failure righ there OP ...but I won't linger on that since many people already called you out on that.
next...yah umm the first Guild Wars was massively popular.....sold lots and lots of boxes. what that equals to is success and Anet is full of it. Anet has developers from all over and even some from WOW and EQ. The Guild Wars F2P model IMO has been the only MMO to implement it correctly and has not abused it's powers. Millions of players from All over the world are eagerly awaiting GW2 why? Because the Guild Wars franchise is freaking awesome, the PVP is balance and the PVE is excellent, get a clue dude.
yeah thats not an mmo, and to answer your question spider, even if alot of people loved gw1.. its not a reason to rate it 9/10 while the game as been announced 2 weeks ago..
FYI, the fact that GW2 was in production was well known over a year ago, it was not a big secret. The fact that tons of people knew about it's development but no official announcments on it besides the fact that it exists made people extremely hyped. Hence why alot of people are rating it highly now that it is finally officially announced and going to be a "Open world".
I personally, could not play GW1 for over 6 months because of heavy instancing and fact that after you play through the story, all you had was PVP, though watching other top ranking guilds duke it out was very fun. GW in itself was a amazing game and very fun storyline/gameplay. If they add more seamless world that players can interact together without having to group up just to explore together, then this will be awsome it it's anything similar to GW1.
MMO = Massively multiplayer online. Now Guild Wars. Is it Massive? Check! Multiplayer? Check! Online? Check! I guess it is a mmo!

No... It doesn't. Nowhere in RPG does it state that such a game must make you level up for X amount of time. Do you want a wiki article? I like wiki articles.
I ctrl + f 'd through that to save time, looking for level. Nowhere did it say anything about a necessary leveling system.
Also, guild wars = fps? it's a first person shooter now? Yes, you can go into first person. And yes, you can click things and it will shoot things at them. But I really doubt it's considered an fps by anyone besides you. Also, most mmorpg's these days fall into your description of an fps.

Are you an idiot? RPG = Grinding now? The fact that you could get from 1-20 in a day was one of GW's shining parts. Grinding is pointless and a boring waste of time. Guild Wars eliminated the grind, and let people spend most of their time actually playing the game. If you ever even played Guild Wars, you would know the levels meant nearly nothing after Factions came out. Progression came in the form of collecting skills and rare items.
The reason why Guild Wars was able to eliminate the grind was because they had no monthly fee riding on the player being forced to play as long as possible. That is why you grind in other MMOs, it isn't because "thats an RPG!", it's to make you pay for as long as possible.

In what way does RPG mean that it takes you a certain amount of time? How much time is enough? Where does it say you never need levels...or a cap?

In what way does RPG mean that it takes you a certain amount of time? How much time is enough? Where does it say you never need levels...or a cap?
"There are two great powers, and they've been fighting since time began. Every advance in human life, every scrap of knowledge and wisdom and decency we have has been torn by one side from the teeth of the other. Every little increase in human freedom has been fought over ferociously between those who want us to know more and be wiser and stronger, and those who want us to obey and be humble and submit."
John Parry, to his son Will; "The Subtle Knife," by Phillip Pullman
