I think people have lost sight of why we play these games....

These kinds of games are the same ones we were playing before just an extension of D&D so to speak. Most people who play MMOs were either playing a similar game on console or they played pen and paper style RPG. This kind of game is usually a story in which you learn to BE your character. You develop a sense of actually participating.

The UO thing was just the next logical step in the evolution of the RPG. We enjoyed playing Ultima on our dads computer and then on our original nintendo. The idea that the world of Ultima could be a persistant world that you could live in and share with other REAL people was far too attractive to ignore. Thus MMO becomes a hot commodity among the RPG community.

Along comes EQ and they take it a step further by making the graphics better and changing your game Point of view so that you feel even more immersed in the game. This was the crowning achievement of MMOs to date. We loved EQ because we finally could be our character and interact with others who WERE their characters.

It wasnt about grinding back then. We were all so immersed in our characters and the rich world of possibility that it did not feel like work. What we are missing is the social aspects that made the games great. Before we all got sucked in to the competition to see who could accumulate the most uber stuff or make the most money. We used to just hang out and enjoy the game.

We desperately need to get back to the roots of the genre. Even if it means losing a large portion of the players. We have to stop blaming the game companies for accomodating us in our greed and lust for advancement. The only way to save our beloved RPG is to refine it to what it once was. A world where the people in it matter more than the things that you aquire.

Alright listen up you primitive screwheads.....This is my BOOMSTICK!

Great sermon, but you’re lacking a game or game company to prop. Ultima X Online was shut down, so that went out the window. I, along with most of the old school community seems to be out of luck. I just figure every one has grown up and moved on to other things. No company wants to put out anything but games like WoW and EQ2, both great games in their own right, but still not what I look for in a mmorpg. The ball really isn’t in our court, we can either not play mmorpgs or play the ones they put out. They pretty much have nerfed the genera of mmorpgs, we are all having to drink diet-mmorpg now, unless some game company wants to hire me or another old schooler with vision as a GD, then we better get used to it.

Nice job guys ... downright surgical, I'd say.   Nothing left to be done here image

Oh, could somebody just sweep the pieces out of the way?

Ravenmgs, get over it ... we all, if we're lucky, get our one FIRST GREATEST MMORPG experience to treasure until the end of time.  After that, yeah it's like you've done it before.  Until they can plug it into your head you take the best you can get ... not that different from life.

In this idiot's defense, I will admit that I too like to smoke about 20 crack rocks before posting on this forum.

Wait, no that's someone else. Sorry.

People still play UO. No one here is stopping you.

And if you think what is being developped now sucks, then make your own game if your ideas are so great.

  • hmm.. Well, maybe because 90% of PvP seems to consist mainly of ganking lower level players, tons of obsene trash talk from 13 year-olds, griefing when ever and how ever possible, and a generally very immature player base.

I am risking to be flamed here but I really dont care anyways. I think the guy who started this post is kind of right, he just chose the wrong way to talk about it. EQ2 and WOW are great games, but I think that the... kill xx mosnters to get x level so you can kill x monster and get x item is REALLY boring. And the formula gets even more complex if we include crafting.. but the whole purpose is to have you doing something so you can get to a certain level and do/get something else..

I am going to quote the WISH Faq here. -->

4.1 - What is the point of playing?

One of our goals is to make Wish more than just a selfish drive to the high levels and the neatest gear.

If they can pull that one out.. then I will play it.. as for now I am just looking forward to GW but I would gladly give it up if Wish pulls it out.

I’ll agree that it can get boring just sitting there killing the same mobs over and over again in the quest to gain levels. But the choice to do that is left to the individual. I do not see how that is brainwashing. Many of us have jobs in RL and enjoy a little brainless mob bashing. It only becomes really boring when games force you to do that, and that is not the case for EQ2.

So what is the point of playing a treadmill type game? Well first of all, the goal should not be to see how fast you can make it to the highest level. The point of the game is have FUN exploring new areas, solving new quest (without simply reading a walk through), bashing some mobs, and being immersed in a fantasy world. So the game is only a treadmill if you make it so.
