Final Fantasy XIV: Cross-Platform Play, Int'l Servers

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

The folks over at One Last Continue sat down with FFXIV producer Hiromichi Tanaka and global online producer Sage Sundi at this year's GamesCom for an interview on Square Enix's sophomore MMOG effort, Final Fantasy XIV.

The interview has produced some interesting information, namely, that Final Fantasy XIV would feature cross-platform play between the PC and PS3, but it doesn't end there either! In addition to cross-platform play, international servers will also be a focus.

How will this affect naming conflicts with such a global and multi-platform community sharing the same space? Square Enix seems keen on the idea of making use of surnames this time around, so, for example, if two players want the name Paranoos, one could choose a surname, like say, Volvere, and voila! Problem solved!

I expect nothing less considering how FFXI is cross platform international servers from the beginning. So I'm glad they are doing the same here, because it would be a huge step backwards to do otherwise.

Intresting news, im very skeptical about FFXIV, but im gonna stay possitive until it comes out. I mean, there are a lot of ideas that could or could not work... besides it completely bummed me down the fact that the races are practically the same as FFXI... I was hoping on beeing able to play as a male mithra! :S

Come on guys, let's be nice.

We all know hardly any MMORPG.com Community members know much about FFXI.

    Just kidding! :)

I always liked games that had multinational servers. Whats the point of playing something 'massive' if your constricted to you own corner of the world?

Our spirit was here long before you

    Long before us

And long will it be after your pride brings you to your end

I really hope they add male mithra as well, or hope they have a race or 2 they are not talking about. In on sense it will be nice to RE create my beloved Galka in FF14. But to attract the FF11 crowd they should/need some more new things besides the combat and job systems, granted I KNOW that there is not much info out there so this is more of a wish/would like/love to see than anything else. To many people get hyper critical about mmos these days, Give me a game thats fun and its not a rush rush to endgame and im in. ok little off topic...ill leeave it at that

Yes! great news & i'm loving the use with surnames :)...not that i will use this name but we will no longer be seeing copy of names like "Xcloudx" lol this is super~ hehe SE owns.

    Keep up the great work!

Which means they dumbed down the UI so you can play it on a controller.  Just curious if you don't have a keyboard attached to the PS3 how do you talk.  Big part of a MMO is talking to others.

MMO's designed for multi-platform play just seem to be mediocre at best.

What makes you think it's "dumbed down" ui? you can buy a USB kb for a ps3 & still play with a kb if you wanted to.

FFXI plays great with kb & controller so will FFXIV.

probably the same way that FFXI does, there was an on screen keyboard and support for usb keyboards. with the price of them it's really worth getting one, or just grabbing one from a pc if no ones using it at the time :)

Wouldn't it be surprising if each region started in a different location in the game, like U.S. players on a different landmass than JP players or EURO players, but we could all pick the same races with different variations for their colors? Like our region would give us races influenced by living in plains and their skin tones we could to choose from would reflect that.

Kinda like a superficial barrier set up for real world regions. I wonder how that would play out socially in the game like that?

It would be interesting to see implemented at the least :)  Though even in FFXI there were some regional issues, even with GM power, etc...so not sure how its implementation would 'work' well - but like communism, the theory looks quite nice.

It's good to see SE keeping almost all great aspects from FFXI, as I never had a bad time partying with japanese players & look forward to playing with all kinds of foreign folks - especially with a translator function (which I hope returns, though a tad more robust).

Seconded. Those are already features of FFXI.

You know, that actually happened on its own on a couple servers in FFXI. It was an odd cultural thing.  It seemed that a lot more American players started in Bastok, a lot more Japanese players started in the Taru Taru city, and a lot of the EMEA players were in the Elvaan city.
