@ todze: I've prolly been in hundreds of these chat rooms sampling various games, and have stayed up many nights listenining to the dribble drabble coming from my siblings trash mouth while he was on vent playing CS, CoD4, WoW.
Yes, talking over vent/TS is superior in raid environment/dynamis/salvage....etc.. That is given.
I've been in many guilds in WAR for expample (these are end game guilds) and the officers try their best to try to make everyone stfu during times where you need focused concentration. it works fine. but when you are not raiding, I have it turned off cuz I didn't really want to listen to everyone's horseshit.
I remember once in war, playing as SM, I was in another guilds vent (tanking for them), and I got some drops (that I didn't want),.. well some asshat in thier vent started talking mad shit about me, not even realizing I heard everything. LOL - got to rip that guy into pieces in front of his guild.
I started ffxi with ps2, and my brother joined me with his gaming rig. I'm not gonna lie, I used his comp when he was at work just so I could chat for LS events/raids. (and hear wtf is going on so you don't look like a dumb afk nublet)
If you have a great guild and mature people in it, that can actually control people spouting off- more power to you. (cuz I have not)
btw, you guys stole my cloud song, and someone throw more DoTs on this thread please.
The option for voice chat for people with friendly guild members who would benefit from this sort of thing, would be awesome. Of course the option to not join a guild where people "demanded" its use is also there , as is the option to ignore the voice chat all together.
So to those who use voice chat in othr games and don't want it coming to FF14. I just don't understand the logic, you obviosuly take advantage of it when you see the benefits in other games and choose not to when you don't feel like it in those games. So why not do that in FF14?
This is basically another choice for FF14 players. Why does allowing the choice for some players while not using it yourself seem so bad. Especially when so many of you use vent or something else, and are only saying no because you don't need it implemented in FF14 itself. That just seems selfish.
To be honest I personally wouldn't want to have to voice chat while in-game.
Typing is fine with me, I just don't like feeling obligated / or having people think getting in a vent or an online chat is necessary to play. I know people stated that it puts you on a more personal level with people playing, I honeslty don't really care about getting 'personal' with people.
Meh I don't really care though if they add it that is fine, I won't be upset either way. I'll just do what I and a lot of other people do.... "I will listen but I don't have a mic" xD

I think the point todze was making is it's your own fault if you choose to use channels with a bunch of idiots that you can't stand listening to.
I only tend to chat to small group of friends while playing. Your not forced to listen to people you don't want to. If your in a guild that expects you to be on vent all the time then find another guild...
An obvious hurdle would have to be the language-barrier. The game has no region boundaries so we will be playing with people of all different tongues. Listening to that, especially if you don't understand it or someone is being completely obnoxious on purpose, creates a difficulty for the radius option. Within linkshell wouldn't be bad, but you can always use Vent or your favorite TS. Not a feature I'm overly concerned with to be honest. I would much rather have them improve the universal chat system they had in XI by leaps and bounds. Overcoming the language barrier is something that I think is beyond amazing for a gaming experience. Edit: Because of this, I voted no.
What about the In Guild Only Voice chat? Obviously u dont think that the languge barrier is a problem there too? I mean writing is just as much of a problem when you dont know the language .
And if we have learned anything from FFXI is that people tend to group in guilds based on language.
I'm not gonna lie, I used his comp when he was at work just so I could chat for LS events/raids. (and hear wtf is going on so you don't look like a dumb afk nublet)
This is why I voted "No" in the poll.
I prefer not to have voice chat because it kills immersion for me but normally I would say that those who like it can use it and those who don't like it don't have to use it.
Unfortunately, once it becomes a standard thing, you are treated like a second class citizen (or "dumb afk nublet" lol) if you don't use it. This was the case for me in both DDO and WAR so I eventually ended up having to use the voice chat to be treated normally.
Also, I will admit I was in a crappy guild in WAR but the guild members in Vent would hardly follow the guild text and the members outside of Vent wouldn't hear what was being said so there was basically two "cliques" or "clubs" of people in the same guild...
Besides the fact this would be a huge waste of development time given that there are plenty of voice chat programs out there already, I personally hate voice chat. It's a bunch of added setup and annoyance to what would otherwise be a simply click and play game session, and the last thing I want to be hearing while I'm playing is some whiney guy I don't know talking about his phat lewtz or ordering everyone around.

If I wanted to talk to people, I wouldn't be playing a mmo, instead I'd go out and hang with my friends. I voted no.
Very ironic statement.
However... I think it serves as a wonderful example of why "more soloable" is the mantra of more and more gamers in the past few years. People don't want to be social. They want to play among others... but would rather not have to interact with them.

heh sounds like me xD
I don't mind playing with others though, I just like being around others rather than actually interacting. Never talked to anyone outside a few people in a social linkshell(6 people total in shell) and saying hello or brb in parties and endgame.
I quite surprised by the figures. Thanks to everyone who has voted. This is really educational to me. I do appreciate all the comments as much as the silent voters. I even see some validity with some of the counter arguements to a voice chat system.
Though in my mind, choice of this sort is not imposing or restricting, and expecting ones non- FF mmo experiences with Voice Chat to be similar to ones idea of FF14 voice chat could be a mistake. I personally think voice chat as an option, would be nice to have for those who'd like to use it, and compltely ignorable for those who wouldn't. Just like all Mithra LS's there can always be "no voice chat" Guilds.
Much of the game is what u make it. And if you want to join the uber-epeener-guild that uses voice chat, well it would be your decision to stay in it. Voice chat in that instance will be just another way for you to know what guild you don't want to be in, before u have wasted much time in them.
I vote yes, basically because Bellarion asked me to... LoL... No not really.
I don't see why this can't be availaible. It's not hard to get your hands on a headset, bluetooh, mic for the PS3 and it's infinately easier to get your hands on it for a PC. Language barrier could be concieved as a small problem, however there are other games with voice chat and those game extend beyond the boundaries of english and they get along just fine.
Just add in the extra thought of, "Just because FFXIV would have voice chat, it doesnt mean you HAVE TO use it."
Ultimately, I think asking for things from games that are already in developement is a futile effort as most companies usually don't listen to their player base much anyway and surely do not when they've already got a plan of action in mind. But it can't hurt to ask Square-Enix Santa for an early christmas present, sometimes they do and the offchance that SE is listening maybe they'll see a common, overwhelming interest in voicechat and change their minds.
In the same breath however companies DO tend to listen to and sometimes concede to the demands of their player base during BETA testing phases, as this is a crucial moment when you are closest to the minds of the Video Gaming gods (other than during Wintereenmas) and they will hear your prayers.
Just add in the extra thought of, "Just because FFXIV would have voice chat, it doesnt mean you HAVE TO use it."
There was an idea earlier about how some people don't like being forced into speaking with others when grouping. If there is an in-game convention they may be less favored for groups than those willing to use the voice chat. That would either make an uncomfortable situation for them or one where they don't get groups because of it.
Also, those not well-versed in English could be (and this may be likely) prone to some ethnocentric jerks giving them a hard time. Not to say that anyone here would do that. I understand the arguments for and against and they both have some great points.

LOL, First Haven, hahaha I said you should post your view and vote it. But thanks for the open minded comment and vote, its nice to see. I totally agree its probably futile, but while SE seems to be handing out the free candy in forms of other commonplace MMO features, I thought I would try and show this one could be a usefull addition as well.
I am more a proponent(sp) of Guild Voice chat. This thread, Starheart, is not only for all encompassing voice chat or voice chat in only one form, but the idea of voice chat in SOME form. Voice chat in a party setup I did not even bring up. Though your comments are logical. Again, the benefit in voice chat I see is the choice to use it, and mostly in-Guild.

Voice chat in a party setup I did not even bring up. Though your comments are logical. Again, the benefit in voice chat I see is the choice to use it, and mostly in-Guild.
nah nah, I understand bellarion. It was just pretty much in direct relation to his quote. In guild would definitely be the most logical implementation of it. You should rephrase the poll to reflect that it's just for in guild though. You may get a different outcome.
My thoughts were that people would see the vagueness of my question and the explicit "Even if its only Guild Voice Chat" and let their votes and comments reflect a more general view view of the idea of voice chat in some form, ven if it was specific to their personal tastes(and maybe they could express what those tastes were, whether they were in guild or all over etc.)
But as you say, people are not getting that and thiking about past game use of voice chat or voice chat without any sort of limitations. But I could have been more clear I guess, hehe, oh well.
If I wanted to chat with people via voice, I would call them or even use teamspeak or vent. However, Voice chat is in fact the bane of mmorpg.
Alot of players never learn to anticipate and act when necessary because they rely on voice chat to tell them what to do next in a game. I mean in FFXI having voice chat is useful, but only sometimes. Winning aginst bosses is not as simple as being able to communicate with each other. Working as a team and teamwork is very different, since the former just work together while the latter seek harmony by thinking what is the proper action that is beneficial for the team.
Vent and Teamspeak help with working as a team so leaders can give out clear and concise commands, but even if by voice people still miss commands if they don't pay attention which is the same thing in the end. Basically, working as a team is something anyone can do as long as they pay little attention, but teamwork require thinking ahead and thinking for others to determine proper course of action. Teamwork does not really need much communication so voice chat plays a very small part.
I thought all FFXI veteran already learned what teamwork is since it is one of the lessons that game teach players.
If it is just chatting for fun, I'll stick with typing, since the horror of vent and teamspeak I am already fed up with.
I would like to see an ingame voice chat, but the chances of that actually hapening s low, even for square.
Also voice chat on xbox360 is an after thought, so much that it limits to a handfull of people and would not work for a linkshell, but possibly for a group if they were going to be together for a long time in their group.
Of coarse people on PC will have vent, teamspeak and xfire even if its just o chat. What I want to see for PS3 is something like group voice chat able to cross game where chatting is not defined by the game you ply but the friends you choose. I don't own a PS3, yet, and know little about what the voice chat is capable of, lets see some more advancewd voice chat witht he PS3 by the end of 2010!
Originally posted by linren I thought all FFXI veteran already learned what teamwork is since it is one of the lessons that game teach players.
You are absolutely correct. When I read this single sentence (about this thread's main argument) it inspired me to ponder for a day before I slapped down a response.
I evovled from ps2, to xbox360 high def, to family gaming pc rig... anyways the relationships I gained through many years of play in ballista, and I often mention ballista often because I consider myself one of those very few percentages. What I'm trying to convey / confess is that after years of playing with friends in a very tight knit community, (EVEN YOUR ENEMIES), you start to understand play style, and develop another sense to anticipate their moves, and vica versa.. they know what your crazy ass is capable up and you need a mean heal, and you know that heal is coming, so you sit in the pocket forever with that faith, and the healer will come in and heal you with the notion that he knows you will survive and reap sweet vindication on remaining foes.
this all done without voice chat.
exp ptys go the same way.... it should be automatic....
raid is another animal for another time. thanks ^^
I never once said I thought Voice Chat best because it facilitated teamwork, so do not imply I did. Futher, do not imply I am incapable or did not also learn to anticipate and rely on others abilities and skills in FF11, just by understanding the time responses of abilities and skills in the game and peoples uses of them.
Part of the reason I want Voice Chat is because I am going to have a large Guild full of friends and it will be fun to play and enjoy the game while being able to talk to them, while on my PS3 which does not have that capability.
Understand that I never stated or implied that Voice Chat would facilitate teamwork. Reread whatever you need to, to understand that.
I agree Soulsurfer. Part of the reason this thread exists is because Sony has not stepped up and donw what it needs to to create a comprehensive Voice Chat system . Still, having the in game option allows one to talk to all of their FF friends not just PS3 users.
And in a helpful and openminded guild this could be a great thing. Others have talked about bad guild experiences with voice chat... I personally would look at the game player base, as I am pretty sure I know what game they are taking about, when it comes to forcing people to use voice chat or alienating them etc... but with that big MMO douchebagery abounds, not just when it comes to voice chat. And people should have the personal strength to leave a guild if its full of douchebags, even if it does do lots of raids etc.
Yeah, I think I'm goint to be the leader of my own guild, helped run by with my brother and some of his friends. I'm trying like crazy hard to peel them off of WoW and show them the light.
I can't wait to have the power to eject people that cannot control thier pie holes. =D

Again, the benefit in voice chat I see is the choice to use it, and mostly in-Guild.
nah nah, I understand bellarion.

Reread whatever you need to, to understand that.

sorry if i misconstrued your point, (i was drunk and posting) oh noez!
anyways, If they do add a ps3 voice thingy, it would be another alternative to a flexible choice of systems.
im all for that d^^b
