Motherboard error problem

GrubbsGradyGrubbsGrady Member UncommonPosts: 371

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone could give me some info on this. My friend just bought a new motherboard/cpu/ram. He hooked everything up and on his motherboard there is a led place where error codes can show. Initially it loaded up to a screen made by the motherboard company, and then froze. After trying to reboot there is a Post Code 8 error. It isn't posting at startup, does anyone have any advice of what could be wrong- do you think he could have just recieved a bad board?

First, what mobo model #, can look up Post Code 8 with that info :)

Second thing I would do is double check the power connections, make sure the extra 4 pin mobo power connector is hooked up, some mobos even use 2x 4 pin I think. Also the CPU fan power connector needs to be hooked up to the CPU fan mobo power connector, if you hook it up to any other connector on there it thinks there is no CPU fan and won't boot.

Make sure the ram and video card are fully inserted and no loose screws fell under the mobo, and the heatsink is fully locked down. Then I would reset the bios by putting the CMOS jumper (next to the battery) on pin 2-3 for a few seconds then putting it back on 1-2 (all this while the PC is unplugged btw) Sometimes the bios just gets a bad read on the CPU and needs to reset the config.

My guess is it just needs the bios reset but I'd run all the steps above too.
