Aion -anything for the casual gamer?

UgraUgra Member UncommonPosts: 7

Like many other fine folk who troll these forums, I am a long-time, old-school mmo gamer who enjoys a very casual gaming style. Truth is, I don't have enough hours in the week for any other style of gaming. I have one huge concern with this game. With guild memberships being capped, what will happen to the casual gamer? Won't very active guilds only recruit very active players? Will they "waste" a membership slot on us casual gamers? I'm concerned that we will end up having to form our own guilds with other casual gamers which suits me just fine in theory, I find all you hard-core nuts a little freaky anyway, but since our memberships also will be capped, will the "casual" guilds be able to get anything done?

Thoughts?

Getting to level 2 and 60 members is easy even for a casual Legion even 3 shouldnt be too difficult and 90 members the rumoured level 4 and 120 members hasnt been confirmed (as far as I know) so not sure on that one as time progresses I think we will see a lot of level 3 casual Legions.

I define myself as casual but I still play at least a couple of hrs a night.

From there its all about networking with other faction Legion's so you can counter Zerg when required and ensure your getting rid of anyone who has went well beyond the realm of casual and not logged in for a month.

My only gripe is i like my alt's to be Legioned I really wish it would be a 90 account cap and not a 90 member cap.

Well.. it sounds like you have the real definition of casual, which is, you would like to play, but you truly dont have the time to put in, and not, you dont have the patients to put in the effort like most of the so called casual our genre seems to have.

Now, the main thing is, are you a casual in the sense that you have a set amount of time to play each day, like 1 or 2 hours, or are you like a weekend warrior?

First thing you will have to do as a time constricted casual is dash all hopes of being in a top raiding/pvp/fortress siege oriented legion, that shit isnt going to happen, as most of them have a daily hourly requirement. but you can find a legion that isnt about turning your gaming time into a second job, id suggest you look on aionsourse, and make a post just saying you ar elooking for a legion and describing your play hours.

Casual guilds can get everything done, they just wont do it as fast as hardcore guilds, you can still pvp in the abyss, you just probably wont be able to take and maintain a fortress, you can still do pve dungeons, but you may have trouble getting the people together to do a raid instance, but that is reliant on your members, casual doesnt mean incapable.

The only thing being casual is going to do to you in Aion, and all mmos really is determine if you get there first, which you wont.

I agree. A casual guild can do anything in Aion but just won't be in line with more hardcore guilds. The only place where I think you might suffer is that your levels might not be on par with more hardcore players. Because of this you might have some issues with abyss and rifting. You'll eventualy catch up but don't be surprised if a very well geared and levelled player takes you and your party out.

then again to a certain extent you can avoid the abyss and rifting and just try to pve. You will still have to keep your eyes open to pvp'ers but as long as you don't mind a bit of pvp here and there you might be able to do it.

Thanks for the responses guys. My concern is less in regards what's technically possible to achieve or the time it will take to level and gear up, bur more specifically regarding the 90 member limit. 90 accounts consisting of people spread across a few different time zones with sporradic playing hours worries me. If the cap was say 300, I would be far less worried. Does anyone have a feel for numbers recquired to truly take part in the end-game content and does anyone have the scoop on alliances?

If you want to be in a casual guild with a good number of players online when you are on, I suggest at least joining one with players in similar time zones.

I'm sure there will be casual guilds for casual players.

Although there will definitely be "uber guilds" that will strictly recruit members and find them selves capped by the limit, most MMORPG guilds are around 40 members, or less.

The sad thing about the limits, I guess, is that the large, casual guild that functions more as a small social network for anyone who wants to join, rather than as an organized guild, won't be as viable.

If you are asking if the game it self is casual friendly? It's one of the least casual friendly games in a while. There is a lot of solo content, (which will have to be supplemented by grinding). However, the leveling curve becomes very steep as you progress and griefing in PvE zones will be a fairly regular occurrence. (Not a danger up to level 20, but a fact of life from that point forward).

There will be days where the casual player will sit down, knowing they only have an hour or two to play and have their plans for the time squashed by griefers who took a rift to your zone. (With only three post lvl 20 PvE zones per side, each fairly small and containing many choke points segregating sections of the zone, it won't be like other games where you might have many other choices of where to go if your current zone is a PvP hot zone).

Level 40s can rift to the level 20-40 zones and even though the rift opening will be in a fairly level appropriate area, it's pretty simple for them to slip to the low level section of the zone. In Aion, you can barely land a hit, skill or spell on someone more than three levels higher, so the ability of low levels to group up to face a higher level group is pretty much nil. You'll have to hope for higher level support from your race to repel the invaders.

Since you respawn back at the bind point, you won't be facing corpse campers, but you will often encounter enemies locking down the choke points and completely cutting you off from the content you were working. The main hub town in each of the level 20-40 zones is surrounded by insurmountable cliffs, with only two very narrow exit points out into the zone. In the last closed beta, on one server, a guild of griefers was able to lock down that zone for almost the entire weekend, preventing players from accessing any of the content in the zone. While the sides should be more even in retail, it still may take an hour or two for your side to rally a force of sufficient levels and numbers to break such a seige, which for casual players may cost them the entire session.

There are no alternate server types that are more PvE player friendly and NCSoft is adamant that there never will be. Caveat Emptor  for most casuals. Know what you are getting into. :)
