Edit: I can understand a lot of people being sceptical; if you're not willing to take other peoples opinions for it then the best thing that you can do is test the three OS's yourself. I've done that and I find W7 to be the far superior product and I've not met anyone who has tried them all and thinks differently.

Right now I am running Windows XP Media Center but when I get my new pc next year I'll be putting Windows 7 on it for sure.
Lets face it none of you know if its better or not, yes they release a list of impromenst but this doesnt mean performance increases.
No wonder Microsoft will be laughing all the way to the bank once again.
uuhhhhhhhhhhh.... a lot of people actually DO know for a fact that it is better.... its called "running the release candidate" which at this point is pretty much identical to the final build of the OS. windows 7 release candidate runs smoothly and plays games just fine. and did i mention that it is set up more more logically than vista?
you seem to have great inside into the windows kernel structure. can you please explain to an old unix geek what exactely "more logically" means?
From what the positive people are saying would it be safe to assume windows 7 is Vista's service pack 2 being repackaged to avoid the negativity surrounding Vista?
If that is the case then it should be pretty good. If not then I would prolly wait because in the past Microsofts first version of anything is usually pretty cruddy and doesn't start working as intended till after they have another couple of goes at doing it. (still remembers the old windows 3.1 to 3.11 error message crap they pulled)

Pretty much! It doesn't have all the issues Windows Vista has and 100% more stable than Vista.
I was very skeptical about Win7 at first. After trying it though, and comparing it with my performance with Win XP Pro SP3. MS has sold me. I'm definitely getting it. My system is hardly a gaming system. Yet I got better performance out of my system using Win7 RC then I did with Win XP pro, in most of the games I tried it on. Without having to tweak it or change anything.
Side note: Vista is a crap OS. MS could not pay me to use that horrid OS again. Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. It came with my laptop, and I used it for about 3 months before I just formatted the drive and installed XP on it.

Not to mention it also takes less resources then vista, has a new taskbar intereface that I like much more, some revamped security, and the professional and ultimate versions come with a fully licensed copy of XP for compatability sake. Windows 7 is where its at.
Vista was crap on release, failed to impress the market and is dead in the water. I work in PC retail and repair, and even now it is rare for anyone to order a new machine and ask for Vista to be installed on it. We actually get more people bringing new machines in, for us to remove Vista and put XP on, than people wanting Vista. We've been running the Microsoft pre-release of Windows 7 for months, on our in-store systems, and we all, without exception, love it. Not one of us has ever kept Vista on their machine for more than 3 to 5 days, so universally do the staff loathe Vista. It's going to be quite cheap in the UK, too, with Amazon selling Windows 7 Home Premium for a measly £65. A win all 'round.
The reason Vista wasn't excepted was there were a ton of people that were trying to run that os with a P4 and 1 gig of ram and thats why it sucked. Ive even seen Vista ship on computers that only had 512mb of ram.
They saw how slow Vista was on there current computer thinking it would be faster because its a new OS but thats not how things work. Vista needed at least 2 gigs of ram 4 if you want to do gaming, and I would do no less than Dual Core. Granted when I tested Vista on my P4 and 1 gig of ram I tweaked it out so it would run better, yeah it looked like windows 98 but oh well it ran decent.
Once people found out it didn't run well on their computers they put out the bad word and people avoided it like the plague. But the people that had sweet ass computers ran it fine. My cousin has been using Vista for years and never had a problem with it and likes it better than XP.

I would assume he is referring to the ease of use, the Win7 UI has sever fairly subtle changes and a few not so subtle but over all it is more comfortable. I do regularly work on XP32 Vista32 Vista64 Win764 and various server OS, as a matter of preference I prefer Win7 (from the point of view of feel) in terms of features Win7 has several changes to the UI in particular the task bar, I have noticed a clear improvement with networking between XP and Vista from Vista to Win7 nothing notable. In terms of multitasking Win7 is clearly the top dog, I regularly lock up Vista and well XP was crap from day 1. With VPCs Win7 has a few new features to include the ability to boot from a virtual drive nothing a gamer would probably mess with but none the less. In terms of general stability Win7 is an improvement you will find that Vista becomes highly unstable over time such as running a work station a week or so without a reboot, Win7 however I have not noticed this, further the Win7 I am referring to gets a lot more abuse than the Vista builds the Vista builds are business systems 1 gaming (highly unstable) the main Win7 system is my main gaming platform has a ridicules number of betas on it and I use it for my own private development projects so it gets worked I would say twice as hard as any of the other builds and is an older set of hardware salvaged from working systems here and there.
In short Win7 is a clear improvement over Vista and Vista as clunky as many found it was a clear improvement over XP. I am not a MS fan and if more games would run on it I would favor OSX (feel free to flame me you nix lovers) but they don't so for a mainstream gamer Win7 is the way to go. On a side note if your still running 32 I highly recommend you go 64 when you make the OS switch time to take full advantage the RAM you hardware has been able to handle for the better part of a decade.
if nothing else you can dule boot your current system (I would sugest this any way untill its live) and give it a try, assuming you can still get the RC cant remimber when they are pulling it.

Whenever Microsoft release something new I always wait for a while till all reports are on par with the old. In the case of Window Vista, I might change to it instead of 7 soon, but for now XP is fine with me. If all reports are good though, I might just skip Vista all together.
I won't purposely upgrade to any new M$ product until it's at least SP2, they've proven time and time again that anything they put out is buggy and it takes at least that long to get it to be somewhat stable. I stayed with XP for as long as I could, when I bought new computers, they came with Vista pre-installed, which I wish I could have prevented, but I couldn't. I hate Vista with a passion, but I don't trust Win7 to be any better for at least 6-months to a year after it's been in the wild.

You get to use RC for free till March 1st 2010, but you can't download it of of Microsoft's site anymore. You can find a torrent but there are a lot of modified versions of it on the web. The file is 3.05gb if I remember correctly so if your going the torrent route look for that file size.
Is there a carrot for us gamers like there was DX 10 with Vista? Why would I give up on this sweet Windows Vista Ultimate that works perfect and offers everything I need? Or does it? I think I'm going to skip Windows 7 unless someone can convince me otherweise. How about you?
there is no reason right now to switch. vista is all you need. most developers dont even offer dx10 support yet nevermind the fact of dx11 games being a year away at best. also you should never switch to a OS at launch. always wait for the first service pack.
Think of Windows 7 not as an entirely new OS but as Vista SP 5-6....
Consider what vista was like when it first arrived, now consider the opposite scenario for 7, and you got what windows should be like all those years ago + DX11.
And yes i have it runing on my PC, yes im a Win XP user prior to that, and yes it runs faster whit all the programs(including games), Just to put an example: whit Empire total war v1.3 i have a nasty CTD, well whit 7 no more..
Well, when Vista first came out, it was a piece of crap. So most people stayed with XP. Now, they're releasing Windows 7 which is what Vista SHOULD have been. Staying with XP would actually be kind of stupid in my opinion. A lot of the time, Microsoft will stop supporting their older operating systems and I don't think that XP will be any different. In fact, it's not smart to NOT upgrade to a new operating system, granted you could wait a while, but eventually it'll be necessary. I know someone who finally just upgraded from Windows Millenia because everything just started becoming more and more of a problem; games wouldn't install and programs stopped working properly. Frankly, if you look at Windows 7 and the beta thats been going on, you'll find that Windows 7 stability and ease of use, is far superior to Windows Vista and in fact, is (in my opinion) better then XP, especially if you plan to use more then 4 gigs of RAM, the 64 bit actually works, flawlessly. The only problem I've had since installing the beta of Windows 7, was actually with Gameguard + Aion, and thats only because Gameguard didn't update their program to include Windows 7 until recently. I mean, it of course would be up to you, but there is always incentive to upgrading to a new operating system. Staying current, is always better, at least in the gaming world. In my opinion. P.S. Up until the beta, I used the same OS as you, but considering the fact that there ARE bugs and problems with Vista, and that they are all fixed and cleaned up with Windows 7, why wouldn't you upgrade?
Well, Windows 2000 was the best OS Ms ever made but it took 1 1/2 year for them to make it run as it should. I will evetually change from XP to W7 but I will wait until they have fixed the worst buggs. So I will probably install it next spring or so. I waited a long time before installing XP too.
Vista is the worst crap since Windows Me, Dx10 might be sweet but it is not worth how much it slows down my computer and lower the stability.
Microsofts OSes are like a MMO, it need some times until it works as it should. In some cases like Vista they never fixes it. And I am not worried about my computers performance, my raided SSDs and my 280 GTX handles rather sweet in XP too.
Does windows 7 work with ETW and Aion and stuff like that then? Also I take it installing it now will wipe my HDD?
Don't know what ETW is but Aion runs just fine on my Windows 7 RTM 64 bit. You can do an upgrade install from Vista. A clean install does not mean formating either, you just set up a new Windoes Folder and a new User folder. Most games ran fine without reinstallation, some were fixed by just copying over the files from the older User folder. But you will have to reinstall some applications yes.
2) Cheapest OS ever ( almost as if they are trying to offer us an apology for Vista )
3)Smallest install package since Win 3.1
4)Quickest install EVER
Full drive format, compete install, networked, patched, all latest updated drivers installed.
XP 4-5 hours if you include manually configuring your internet connection and tracking down and upgrading all the drivers for all your hardware.
Vista 2-3 hours if you include manually tracking down your lastest hardware drivers.
Win 7 15-20 mins including full format, install, automatic network configuration and connection optimization ( including home or office lan network setup ), automatic latest driver selection and installation, automatic processor and memory optimization.
5) Err did I mention PRICE?
6) Automatically recognizes and handles configuration and optimization of TRI and Quad SLI : ))
and the list goes on but those were the biggest sellers for me.

Ok in MMO terms then.
Windows ME at release = Anarchy Online at release.
Windows Vista at release = Age of Conan at release.
Windows 7 as RC = Aion.
I beta tested all those games too. Aion as it was in closed beta ran much more stable and was much more rich in content than many mmo's 2 years after release. Same thing applies to Windows 7. Windows 7 is not just a new OS it is also like Windows Vista SP3 only better.
I played with Vista 32 and 64, never had problems really.
Have now Win7, and everything runs smoother. Can only say what has been said and mentioned in reviews:
better memory management, better gfx-interface management (you don't have the application lock-up as under Vista), and Dx11 (although, one doesn't really need that....). Plus, it will be cheaper than Vista at release....

Microsofts OSes are like a MMO, it need some times until it works as it should. In some cases like Vista they never fixes it. And I am not worried about my computers performance, my raided SSDs and my 280 GTX handles rather sweet in XP too.
1) Most stable pre-release OS EVER

Plus, it will be cheaper than Vista at release....
alright fanbois I'm now intrigued! I want to try it.
Will be down.. err buying it when it's released!
R.I.P Chikaca Whachuchu
That would be you being completely wrong then.
