Laptop for College / Games

ak282ak282 Member Posts: 21

I am looking to buy a new laptop I can use for college and for games. I do not want one that is too big or too heavy.

Right now, I have a very old desktop that surprisingly runs games decently.

P4 CPU 2.6ghz with Hyper Threading
17" Monitor
1 GB of DDR Ram
Nvidia GeForce 6800 GS - AGP
Windows XP Professional
107 GB HD

It's old, I know lol

Now, I was thinking of getting this laptop for college

15.5" XBRITE-ECO™ LCD
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T6500 (2.10GHz)
4GB PC2-6400 DDR2/800MHz
320GB HDD
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4570

Right now, I can play WoW on high settings and I used to play Lineage 2 on medium settings.

How will this laptop be in playing:

- World of Warcraft
- Champions Online
- Aion
- Starcraft 2

Also, will this laptop be an upgrade over my desktop?

Unfortunately, that is not an option for me. Can anyone please answer the questions?

It will play those game alright, for a laptop. The thing I would be concerned about is the battery life. While the web site states a 4 to 6  hour battery life, most reviewers say they are are only getting 2 to 3 hours out of the battery.

This has a smaller screen but a little bit faster video card (the 130M = 9650M), depending on how much portability you want. I would go with Cleffy's if portability is no problem.

    Acer Aspire AS5739G-6132 Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 GeForce GT 130M $750
    Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 2.1G
    Screen 15.6" 1366 x 768
    Memory 4GB DDR3
    Hard Disk 250GB
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 130M

This is a good ASUS laptop from Newegg.com at a very good price.

It has a 2-year warranty standard and I love Newegg's extended warranty.

The only problem I see with the laptop is the OS.  The OS on this laptop should really be 64-bit.  I would reformat it and install Windows 7 RC 64-bit.

Yea, I was gonna link that one as well but it turns out the 220M is really a rebranded 9600M so it's exactly the same as the Acer Cleffy linked but with a smaller screen so I dunno.

It looks pretty ok for a laptop, if you must have a laptop you should go for it.

However the best option for gaming is to buy a palmtop or one of those cheap Acer 10" laptops for school and a new desktop for the gaming. There is a huge difference in performance between a desk and laptop and you can easily move the files between the computers.

If you buy the laptop you should buy a keyboard, a mouse and a 22" or 24" flatscreen to have home because the screen of a laptop and the keyboard really sucks for gaming, and you don't need anything extra for using them. And a mouse is a must, playing with the touchpad is almost impossible.

In my opinion, you should not have a problem with the games you specified
