THATS RIGHT! Microsoft can ELIMINATE the cheating and botting in MMO's for good EASILY!!
Here is how:
Provide a limited gaming version of your OS as a gaming platform for any MMO.
Leave only features that are essential to play the game and REMOVE EVERYTHING ELSE.
Including removing multitasking! There is no need for the gamer to be running any 3rd party software while playing!
The only thing that comes to mind that could be needed would be playing custom music, teamspeak, and web browsing features. The player doesn't need anything else! Those can be integrated into the OS or the game itself and that IS ALL that is needed while playing an MMO.
Installation of 3rd party softwares and any kind of coding should be disabled!
Here's how it would work:
The OS would come with the game install or separately whatever would work best.
They would install as a parallel OS with the normal one that you could choose from your BOOT MANAGER everytime you boot up your computer.
Wrapped into a designated drive encryped and in such format that it can't be accessed via other operating systems.
AS A BONUS! Increased gaming performance due to the lite build no needless processes eating up the resources and slowing down your computer! PURE GAMING!

So basically, you want an XBox.
Perhaps an XBox you can upgrade hardware on.
I get it, but... >>everything<< is hackable given enough time and effort, and there are some really smart scripters out there doing bad stuff. So it might cut down on cheating and hacking a bit, as a deterrent, but I don't think it would be marketable. Anybody willing to buy a separate computer with a separate OS for gaming (or even to be willing to spend the disk space to set up partitions and deal with the manager for dual boot) would probably just buy a console.
EDIT:I dual boot, and some days the manager gets really damn annoying. Not to mention what happens if your boot manager screws up.
Also, if I couldn't run Winamp while gaming I would be very irritable. ^^ Or export screenshots. Or look at forums on the internet whilst lfg (which won't run properly without scripts enabled or browser add-ons.) Finally, I'll be damned if I'm going to be forced to use IE on my own PC.
This is a terrible idea. Anything like this can be broken, so all it's good for is annoying people that don't cheat. I like to surf the net, watch videos, etc. while gaming and this would prevent this. It is a terrible idea and no one will ever go for it. If you want to play without cheating, play on a console.

they never said they played wow assumption is bad, and i love doing the same thing while i play it makes the game more enjoyable plus your idea is terrible sorry lol.
End to cheating: Full IP ban from the internet. Of course many way's to go around it, but it would be a nice step, but has to be proven without a doubt that a person has been using cheats/hacks
Op's idea seems not so good to me, as like others pointed out, why not just take a console. Oh and I definitly consider myself a gamer and truly HATE cheating which is totaly against my "gaming religion" sort of speak, and OP sorry aint from the WOW gen. You could say started with the Pong gen.
Typical, no one thinks your idea is good so you take a fit and assume we all play wow.

Actually I'm 31, been a computer tech for the last 9 years, played every mmo since THE REALM thats right the first mmo to garner any attention and I'm telling you this is the stupidest idea anyone has ever uttered on these forums. No piece of software, especially OS's are unhackable, what you are talking about would make no difference. Here is the reality the xbox was hacked and what you are talking about is similar to a xbox, what changes? Limit the OS features and you might limit the number of options the hacker has to use but it doesn't change the fact those options are there.

im sorry but this idea is stupid. if you want a game that you cant do anything but play the game go play on a console, or better yet go play FPS... MMORPG's have this thing... dont know if youve heard of it... its called DOWN TIME!!! you cant be so enthralled in a game that you dont have time for other things... even back in my EQ days there was still time do alt tab and browse a forum. at any rate i think the poster is an attention whore, and we all fell for the bait. Don't play games with easymode and as a gamer you should be able to really ignore cheaters, I just consider them wanna-be gamers and actualy feel kind of sorry towards those who need to cheat in a game because for some reason they not really able to play a game. Stil don't like your idea, sorry, and like I said before I am from the Pong generations before you asume that those who do not like your idea to be from the WoW era.
Um you seem to forget about driver software such as SetPoint and Razer drivers.
If they ever did something like this I would be infuriated. I do not cheat, but often I web surf while I'm semi-afk in a game. No one has the right to tell me I can't do that, sorry. Some games are built around how well they multitask with other processes.

Your OS would prevent you from eating? Im all for new ideas and such for real and would never call your idea dumb but I do not agree with your idea.

I did that in WOW, because there was downtime.
Earlier MMOs there was more downtime -- as a result I didn't even play those games :P
Find a game which cuts out the majority of downtime (Guild Wars was one) and you'll find I was playing the game the entire time.)
Even in Champions Online where you get a travel power and travel times are 20-30 seconds to a quest, I'm in my 2nd monitor browsing (usually MMORPG.com :P) It's amusing too, since my main character has Teleport (which requires me to click over and hit T twice every 4-5 seconds.)

I think OP has a wonderful idea.
Any time you'd access database sites(like, when you type "<insert random MMO> <insert random thing> info", you cannot go on that MMO for 6 hours. If you do it again, you'll get a last warning. If you do it three times, your PC should blow up!
Damn those cheaters.
