Procedural generated endless hack & slash (Diablo like) MMO.

This is something i would love to see, and play.

Just had to post something like that since...

This is my 1974 post, which is also year of my birth :)

This is something that we (my small team) have actually been experimenting with for a while. As far as I can say, we have two approaches to a massive world of this nature:

    1. Instanced world with connectors, ALA Guild Wars.

    2. Procedurally generated and changing world, that procedurally changes over time, within certain constraints.

The second approach is the one we would love to see occur, because it would give the most flexibility with a game, as well as a game world. The problem is, of course, that you can't have a system that depends on static content (like most questing systems and the like in current games). Hence, we're actually taking the approach of trying to fit a procedural questing system, with certain key figures and non-altered places in the world, into the mix.

Note, what we're doing right now is more so of a proof of concept project right now, and with only 2 programmers and three designers (team of 4, I am both programmer and designer, the there is one other programmer and two other designers / artists) this could take a LONG while.

So, that's my answer to your post. I think, personally, it is completely possible, given a system that can handle specific constraints on procedural content generation.

I actually had good mind to start small indy project.

Procedurally generated dungeon hack&slash , in spirits of Nethack .. or more acuratelly Dungeon Crawl.

Client would be light weight 2D , browser based plugin.

It would support parties up to 8 players. There will be no outside world as such. Just rooms for trading and forming of groups.

Quests and dungeons would be random - in all "roguelike" glory

Basically back to the roots. Diablo 1. Fast , accessible ... but also very complex. With free to play model.

Coding would be drastically shorter cause we would use open source games like Dungeon Crawl.

    But alas.

There is will. And graphic skill... but no programmer , or manager.

    Still its good to dream

  • True that.  Amazing no devs have figured this out yet.  Well, actually they probably have figured it out, but no one wants to take on the bots, hacks, and rmt that will come with it.  After all, you can't just throw the trashy bop mechanic in this kind of game.  You have to have trading otherwise there's little to no point.

Personally, I say the best route is to go with the RMT and treat the game sort of like magic the gathering.  A "collectable" game.  Create an ebay-esque shop, let players buy and sell gear, skim from the top through auction fees, and use part of those funds to "hack-proof" the game.  Sure, the anti-rmt crowd will stay away, but there's more than enough of a market of people who don't give a rats ass about rmt and actually enjoy it (and personally I've always found the anti-rmt crowd to be a clear minority - I think the rmt sales numbers pretty much prove it).  There's plenty of people who will play, I guarantee you that.

Ive played some independent game developers/ indie games/ garage games/ student games that had the same premisse.

    1. Depths of Peril

    2. Fate

Both gave me days of fun, a shame none of those had multiplayer.

I could have mentioned a lot of others, but start with those two first.

This. Dungeon Runner is very much what OP wants... and it's tongue-in-cheek humor about it's gear... stuff similar to "Cardboard Great Axe of the Three-Legged Mule"

F2P too... or you have a minor sub to be able to use uber items and ultimate "Rainbow" named weapons... think for bankbox too not sure, been a while since I played.

     Lineage 1 is kinda Diablo-like.

Althought it is a fullscale MMORPG the play style kinda resembles Diablo.

Great fun when you get into it.

Dungeon Runner didnt really get it. Gameplay is really off.

Only online game that ever came close was Mythos. But that was sadly closed in Flagshipped fiasco.

They are working now to make a new game. "Torchlight" but it will be single player. And MMO version will be out much later. Perhaps in one year time.

Having procedural generated areas would only make sense in an instanced approach such as Guild Wars. Otherwise would just be '"world of plasticine online".

Better to be crazy, provided you know what sane is...

I played Mythos also... exactly how is Dungeon Runners gameplay "off" compared to Mythos? By the way... Mythos IP was aquired by Hanbitsoft, and they have a closed beta registration site open for Mythos now. Enjoy.

After a long time of wait, your dream came true.

Mythos started OPEN BETA on Korea this month. Soon in North America.
