Oblivion was shit to be frank. It took the playerbase to fix their game with user created mods.
Wow, your the first person i've ever heard that called Oblivion shit. The game was extremly polished and complete. There were two money glitches at release and they fixed that with a patch shortly after. 99% of the player created mods i've seen are just add ons for new places and equipment, i can't say i've ever seen a mod that tried to "fix" something that bethesda did wrong or bad. I think it's awesome that they have such a sweet tool set that allows people to make such awesome mods, which is another plus to the game, once you beat it, just download a few player made mods and you can play for many hours more with new things to explore.
Then you obviously weren't there from day 1 at release. The main forum was littered up with rage fom the community. let me adress a few things. but first let me say this. I have the outmost respect for modders and the modding community. My issues are solely with Oblivion and Beth.
I followed oblivion during development and there was this huge rave of a new "radiant A.I." A groundbreaking AI system that would give Oblivion's characters full 24/7 schedules and the ability to make their own choices based on the world around them. Non-player characters eat, sleep, and complete goals all on their own. Sure npc's walk around and enter and leave shops, but they don't really do anything and nothing like what was presented and promised. This was completely removed from the finished game. I remember a demonstration trailer with this woman in her room throwing spells at her cat or something and doing chores?. They also promised unscripted conversations between you and the random townsfolk..another thing that was left out..the conversations was very much scripted.
I bought the game and after a short while of exploring i realized something. The game has an awful level scaling system. all the dungeons and its mobs and loot were all geared towards your level, no matter if you visited them at level 5 or level 30. This effectively killed off the feeling of becoming more powerful and also the feeling of "oh shit there is some high level mobs in there..i can't wait to level up so i can go explore it...they must guard some awesome treasure in there". even if you managed to open up some of the hardest locked boxes the loot would be equivalent of your level instead of the difficulty of the box. This became even more ridiculous when you became 30 plus and all towns people/town guard started wearing daedric armor instead of regular clothes as soon as you hit that magic level where it became available.
I understand there are/was mods that could fix my issues with the game but i'm one of those gamers that prefer the fixes coming from the game company themselves rather than the community. I'm not a big fan of user created content to enhance my games. I would download a mod or two but i shouldn't have to download mods to fix core gameplay mechanics for it to be playable.
This is not even to mention the amount of bugs the playerbase had to fix. I have spoken and written with enough people to know i wasn't alone in thinking Oblivion sucked. But if you only venture in fanboy communities you would have completely missed the other half.
I wouldn’t call myself a fanboy. I played the game when it first came out and loved it, although I completely agree with the faulty leveling system. That would be one of only a couple complaints I had with the game. I wished it was like morrowind, but still i thought it was amazing. I had it for Xbox so i never used any player mods until I later borrowed the pc version from a friend and downloaded a bunch of mods.
I see where your coming from but in my opinion some broken promises and some bugs wouldn’t make the game deserving of the title "shit." Just look at Two Worlds, if you think oblivion is shit, then there must not be a word in any language in existence that would be able to describe that game. Overall I think the game was great and nearly perfect if you could get past the horse lag and the bugs. Joining the dark brotherhood and assassinating people and climbing my way through the ranks of the various guilds will be something I’ll never forget.
On April 15, 2009, it was announced that Bethesda Softworks moved to rescind the Fallout MMORPG license. Interplay received notice from Bethesda that it intends to terminate the trademark license agreement, claiming that Interplay is in breach of the agreement for failure to commence full scale development by April 4, 2009 and to secure certain funding for the game. Interplay disputes these claims.
So unless Interplay can convince Bethesda to back off or win a court case this MMO won't be called Fallout because they will have lost the rights to the IP.
The fact that Bethesda is actually going to file suit is really interesting that sorta shows intent... suing people takes money.

Anyways, nothing is still certain yet. But it seems like it's a bet that Bethesda been working a bit on Fallout online, they probably wouldn't bother suing otherwise.
Yes, the company that made the first two, wildly popular, Fallout games is definitely not the right company to make the MMO. They must not know anything about the universe or lore. Nor do they know anything about making a good game. It's not like they have two other wildly popular franchises like... oh... Baulder's Gate and Freespace? Under their belt. Bethesda didn't "go with" Interplay. When Interplay sold them the rights to make Fallout 3 they retained the rights to a Fallout MMORPG being they started production by April 2008. Interplay MADE Fallout in the first place, Bethesda just took the universe and feel of the 2D classics and made a modern game that retains the humor, character, and ambience of the originals. Bethesda is fully open to make an ES MMO, the Fallout MMO has NOTHING to do with them, nothing. And if you're talking about Masthead Studios, frankly, you don't know what they are like. They haven't released a game yet. And going from a trailer and some screens says nothing about a game. Next time, maybe pull up Google, look at something, anything, that tells you what's going on before you make a stupid post. Okay buddy?
It would be fun to have an MMO, being it was in the Oblivion universe. Morrowind was a fun game, but I'm much more attracted to the Oblivion setting.
Balders gate was made by Bioware, they just published it.
They are bad with the programming however, they stole Bioware engine for the Icewind dale 1 & 2, got sued for it too and lost "Neverwinter nights" just before release.
But I rather have them do the Fallout game anyways and Bethesda do their own thing instead.
Anyways, nothing is still certain yet. But it seems like it's a bet that Bethesda been working a bit on Fallout online, they probably wouldn't bother suing otherwise.
This is a possibility, that or someone else approached them about licensing the rights to make a Fallout MMO and offered enough money to make it worth their while.
Granted its more likely they're doing an MMO, its just still very unusual, they've had many opportunities to do one in the past and have always turned against that idea in favor of a compelling single player game...
I wish all these companies would stop passing around their IPs like it was free candy =/
The original owners seem to do better with their own game engine's and lore. KotOR I kicked ass, KotOR II kicked ass, but there was obvious wtf moments in the story and some of the gameplay. Had Bioware stuck (and this was more LA's fault then either BioWare or Obsidian Entertainment) with KotOR II and had sufficient time to fully develope the story/game, then I would be willing to bet it would have won game of the year again like KotOR I did.
Anyways, All this deal making behind the scene seems to always hurt the final product. Eh, they are the ones making millions, so they must be doing something right (just not all the time from what I can see).
I Reject your Reality and Substitute it with My Own!

I wasn't calling you a fanboy. I'm sorry if you took it that way as it wasn't what i was trying to convey. If you are part of an Oblivion community today you are less likely to see critizism. The criticizm died out long ago since it's now an older title.
I would even go as far as to say the gameplay of now dismantled 3DO's old Might & Magic series far surpasses the gameplay of Oblivion unmodded. Not in the graphical sense but sheer fun and immersion. But that is my personal view. I don't expect others to agree. i would rather replay any of the older M&M titles than take another crack at Oblivion
I agree, too bad it won't be made anytime soon. Especially now since Bethesda went with a crappy MMO Company to make Fallout MMO and that venture is working out swell =P
However, if the Fallout MMO falls through, then maybe, just maybe they will think about making an Oblivion MMO.
Interplay is far from a crappy company. The made one of the greatest rpgs of all time, Baldurs gate.
And here we have one more person confusing the Interplay of old with the Interplay of now.
Almost all of the old devs are gone. The current Interplay incarnation hasn't made shit.
And now that Bethesda is suing them for breach of contract, the new Interplay won't have the chance to make anything. They are toast.

I know this now, I did not know this before posting my original statement however; I've been reading up though.
Too bad for Fallout MMO, even if it does get made, it will have this stigma attached to it until it gets release and at that time it had better be perfect or it may be the end of that. =/

I bought Oblivion on launch day for the Xbox 360, and it goes down as one of my favorite games of all time. I also play a lot of games of many different types so I feel that saying that about Oblivion means a lot. The game just had a great world, and story attached to it. Everything seemed alive, the characters had personality, and the quests had some great stories attached to them. Such as one quest where you enter into a guys dream world to free parts of his personality, or entering a painting to save a painter who used a magic paint brush to create it.
I would love to see any mmo in the future create an environment such as that done in Oblivion. I could spend hours just walking around and looking at all the beautiful vistas in the game. And the wildlife actually seemed more alive in the sense that the deer actually looked more real running around the wilderness rather than just a little deer looking critter walking back and forth waiting to die as seen in current mmos such as WoW. The weather effects in Oblibion were very well done with realistic looking and sounding rain, and some amazing lighting effects for the sky. So many things that can be looked at and adapted to make and world look better.
Oblivion was shit to be frank. It took the playerbase to fix their game with user created mods.
Any MMO that introduces level scaling can count me out as a customer. Dumbest design in gaming history
Yes and yes.
Put me down for yes and yes as well. Well I don't think Oblivion was shit, but the level scaling and the ez travel modes and hand holding to quest locales made me realize it was not in the same league as say the Ultima series.
The interesting part is from 3.30 to the 5.50 mark. Radiant AI was one of its major selling point for a lot of people who followed this game during development. Shocked to find out it was completely dumbed down and even a good portion removed. I myself was tricked by this as an AI like this was unlike anything seen in such a game before. As close to a living breathing virtual world you could come in a fantasy single player game. this is what i was sold on as it was for a lot of people. Then buying the box and finding out it was non existant. Oh well tried to look past it but the hits just kept on coming and landing straight in my face. Now it's a cupholder. There is no denying the game is absolutely beautiful. On the graphics side i have little to nothing to complain about. That was never really anybodys issue
The only thing that made oblivion special where the modifications, the vanilla version is actually pretty shitty, the level scaling was the biggest letdown. Running to the end in mere minutes is somewhat stupid.
Before Oblivion I would have been very excited about an ES MMO, now I'd have to watch it with suspicion... level scaling, possibly the dumbest concept in gaming history? hah

Yes and yes.
I sort of disagree.
It just sounds to me like players want to eventually be able to one shot everything once they get of level. Where is the challenge in that? Heck, I can just go into the toolset and make myself a god, problem solved.
Where the level scaling didn't work is that you were having minor road bandits being of the same power as you. Or that guards were always the same power if not higher than you.
However, being able to go into a dungeon and get a challenging experience is a good thing. What's the use of being lvl 41 if I'm the most powerful thing in the world? I should be one of the most powerful things in the world.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

There is nothing accurate about what you are saying. In addition, level scaling is an amazing mechanic as it makes the content challenging and fun no matter what level you are, so you focus on the story and not how powerful you are.

I'm in agreement with your criticism fibsdk. The gameplay does have alot of shortcomings in Oblivion. But from a artistic perspective, it has beautifull landscapes and excellent musical compositions wich really fit the world that it takes place in. I definitely always thought Elder Scrolls games were really immersive.
But then again, the mods could compensate its shortcomings. I still think TES:IV Oblivion is Game of the Year 06.
