Aion: Open Beta Ends, the Wait Begins

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

The Aion Open Beta test ended this morning at 8AM CST, and with the doors now closed, the wait begins. The doors will open once again on September 18th for players eligible for the Pre-select program, which allows players to select their servers, reserve their names, and create their characters a full two days before the Head Start program begins. The Head Start program will then begin on the 20th, with the floodgates opening for the full launch two days later on the 22nd.

So how did the Open Beta go? From what we understand, much like Champions Online, even Aion couldn't escape Open Beta woes; with issues like widespread lag, login issues due to the authentication process, and a bevy of GameGuard errors cropping up.

patch was released during the Open Beta program to address many of these issues and more, and as a result of the aforementioned problems the Open Beta was also extended six hours to 8AM CST this morning.

So now with the Open Beta over, how was your experience? Did you hit the level 30 cap during the test? What do you plan on playing, or doing to occupy your time between now and the game's imminent release? Let us know in the comments!

I am going to play Aion for this reason:

It's not the best.. but it's the best new thing that is out there right now. This game will hold me over untill Guild Wars 2 and Final Fantasy XIV.

Gameguard is the one and only reason I am not going to buy this game. GG is pretty much a big sign to hackers saying "Hack me cause I don't do crap"

My motherboard burnt out on the very day of open beta. I didn't get to try it.  Will get the game though

Seriously I enjoyed the changes made between the closed and open beta. I never experienced a problem with lag, or any game gaurd issues, save one isolated incident when I alt-tabbed out of the game, it shut it down, that was kind of annoying, but nothing to emo quit over.

My Internet connection suffered some major issues and got D/C'd cause AT&T has way WAY too many incompitent people, and apparently something as simpe as changing service to a new address can have problems three months down the road, when they say you haven't payed you bill when in fact you payed the bill they sent you, but thats not the bill to the account supplying service.

anyways point being I got to play OB for three days, from what i understand though they got alot of the problems solved by the end of the OB. Can't wait, gonna go talk to a friend of mine and see if he'll come get me friday if I decide to freeze myself so i don't have to wait.

Aforementioned problems aside, i had a blast in this game. I love the combat system in particular and found the grouping aspect of the game to be engaging and fun.

If you are a fan of the grouping of Final Fantasy 11 and the pace of WOW combat, then this might be the game for you. Everyone has mentioned how radical the graphics are, lest we forget that you also get the best of both worlds in this game (at least as far as the beta is concerned). If things keep with the way they were in the beta (content and combat wise), then I see a bright future for Aion in the next few years.

Its doubtful that anything will top WOWs manic audience as it is that WOW is a  "Crowd that attracts a crowd" game. People will finally come around the bend once an altogether new concept is put into the mix. Something that not only panders to those with little RL time on their hands, but also those hardcore gamers.

Until someone reinvents the wheel, I see excellent games like this "Tickling the fancy" of players, but I don't see anyone hitting the numbers that WOW and its endless commercialism has brought it success wise.

that is one strange reason not to play a game , you are not going to play becouse of some strange way of thinking , well more room for those who will play , i will play .

I didn't hit 30 but i can tell u one thing the pvp pre 25 ( rifts and  zone defend) made my blood boil it was like "come one rift announcement come faster" meanwhile waiting for that , questing ocupied the remaing time . So even if u are not 25 u can get a full day just doing quests / rifts ( and yes u get abyss points if u kill asmos/elyos who come throu rifts, even more u get experience while u do that ).  And the thrill of getting throu the enemy teritory killing and fighting for your own skin reminded me of DAOC in his first period , or even a little of warhammer but  one zerg who is leaded bad can disapear in an instant even though the zergs are high lvl ( rifts have the bad and perveted pleasure of appearying in high lvl/elite zones ) , Wittnesed ( hope i spelled it right) how an lvl 30 templar vanished from 3 hits elite mob lvl 36-37 and an enemy asmo so kinda hard and rewarding if u succede to get behind enemy defenses , setup an kiosk well hidden and bind to it so u can stay for 2 or more h inside  enemy back lounge. You do not get kicked out of the asmo/ely theritory unless your kiosk is destroied or u forgot to bind to it ,even if the rift it self is long gone.

LE: bah the post should have been next to mokwee or smthing , but u guy's posted to fast :D

  • I never had any GameGuard issues, and my lag was only there every so often when my internet was messing up.

I had a great time with the game, and I'll definitely be playing on the 20th because I've preordered it.

I loved both closed and open beta - the patch in open beta was pretty much right on point for the issues that we were facing.

There are definitely some other tweaks that need to be addressed - specifically key binding for camera movement and flight imo - but other than that it's a great game so far!

I haven't decided what class I'll be yet, but I'll be Elyos and either Ranger or Sorc.

See you at headstart and/or launch :)

I only reached 15 in my few days of playing, but I enjoyed myself in this game, and found myself playing till early in the morning which hasn't happened for me in an MMO in a few years. I may buy it, but I think I'll wait till I see trials for this game hit later on down the road so I can play further into and see if if starts sucking past 20 like most games.

While I did not have the chance to play the open beta of Aion(Fall classes intruded), I do look forward to character selection and the launch date.  In the meantime, when I actually have time to play an MMO, it will be DDO Unlimited(which I am pleased with.........one of the few truly well implemented f2p games out there).   I encourage everyone to give the revamped DDO a try.  It costs nothing and I think the new storyline has enhanced the game.

Only got to level 17 on OB mainly cause i kept jumping from one class to another on and on both races. I usally played a tank or healer so naturally my first 2 choices where cleric and templar. Then was like you know what I want to try something new, rolled a scout and assended to assassin loved every moment of it very fast paced and fun. I'll roll a cleric as my alt later on just cause playing a healer later on to help friends get their alts up as well.

as for what I will be doing till the 20th. Well I logged back on WoW this morning and started doing daylies and was like uuuugghh. I guess ill just be playing some arkham asylum and wait for the season opener of always sunny in phillie

Only got to 27, I must be missing something in the leveling process because I played for a decent amount of time, or doing too much (had extract vitality at 200, extract aether at 125 but didn't level crafting).

Anyway, still had a lot of fun and looking forward release, my lag was fixed on the second day of the Open Beta.

CB and OB was a blast was it me or once you hit 25.. the game fully felt opened up...

The Abyss Tests were fun and enjoyable (flight quest et al) and you basically got a cutscene explaining almost every question you have thought of asking (and some really awesome mobs to look at).

The cutscene explaining the abyss and the first meeting of asmodians and elyos was very enjoyable. The game just started getting going (although a shame the PvE quests kinda drop off [quantity wise] a couple of levels 25-27).

Still no lag, incredible rift fights ... we had 50 asmodians chasing us after we battled through half their lands... (completed all my spy quests along the way, bar one i had picked up the asmodian side)

can't wait for retail... everyone was friendly and awesome on the server, never seen so many PvPers HELP people... even if you weren't in their "alliance" or "legion"

I'll be there on the 20th as well.  This is one of the most polished games to release in a while with a ton of PvE and PvP content.  If end game is as fun as I hear, It will probably take SWTOR to pull me away from this one.

Wife & I hit level 14 during OBT....  I have to say that I was quite happy with the crafting system... It is the one aspect I am looking forward to exploring on the 20th!

I've played the Chinese version and closed beta, but the open beta did disappoint me. The only reason being is that all of a sudden I couldn't connect any more. I was one of the many that got the "cannot connect to server" problem and I probably spent a good 10 hours the whole week doing different methods on many forums to try and fix it. It never got fixed. If a lot of people still get that problem on launch you will hear a large crowd roar.

But the game is awesome none the less.

The game is pretty good, but not worth paying for. So I'm going to go a head and pass on this one.

When we get back from where we are going, we will return to where we were. I know people there!

I had quite a bit of fun playing, mostly because it's a new setting, a new grind, new most things. I'm just so tired of grinding in WoW and FFXI, that having Aion come along and give me flying, and a sweet tank class that looks awesome and plays well is a godsend. I will definitely be playing head start, and release day.

P.S. Never really had a problem with lag, just had to turn my graphic settings down some, played like a chaaaarm.

P.P.S. Anyone looking to start a casual, fun guild? PM me. I'm looking for one, doesn't matter what server, preferably something in the midwest timezone though. AGAIN, casual, you have to be okay with a casual templar player.

    See you guys in game.

Yeah it's not a bad game, I think some people may be having flashbacks on how they got burned with games like RF Online though.

Maybe its just me but this type of artwork still facinates me.  I am referring to grinding in one area and having the sky and surroundings go through different color changes in a day and night cycle creating an individual mood everytime I play.  It is not so much as eye-popping but what is called visual stunning and Aion has that only to be refined in later content release and expansions.

I played both a Elyos and Asmodian character to level 10 getting to their starting cities, ascending, and grinding in the first flying area.   I went exploring with my Elyos character and found a tree town/city that was probably the best of that type of fantasy I have seen in both MMO and regular video games.

I have 7.1 sound X-Fi Xtreme Gamer sound card and the sound is also very professional and in the 7.1 sound (maybe 5.1 am not sure).  I have some clicks and static at times but it is still good sound.  For a Beta that I just played through that was really well done.

I love what I have seen so far.  Some of the grinding areas may seem tight knit but over time I think it will play out compared to the early starting areas.

I am not urinating on the floor but I am looking forward to the launch when the play time counts.

They have a hit and though it may not be as big as World Of Warcraft in its early heyday there will be alot of people that will enjoy this game.
