I liked Aion, really, but pay to play is a buzz killer for me. Does Anybody have a suggestion for a free game that is similar to Aion? I've played Perfect World, and it's similar, but I've gotten tired of it after getting 2 different toons up to lvl 40+. Too much useless grind.

Maybe Shaiya Online? It has the same art style and similar playstyle. No flight, though.
If you want to fly, there's always Flyff, but that is incredibly animeish.
From what I have seen and heard, Perfect World is as close as you can get to Aion for 'free'. I myself don't mind P2P games at all, I mean I spent like 10x the amount of money a month on coffee as I do for 3 MMOs, heheh.
My favorite F2P MMO is still Ragnarok Online. It's nothing special at all and the whole point of the game is to grind, but.. so fun.
Hopefully somebody else can help. Good luck!

That is the exact same way I justify it to myself, lol.
Karos Online.
2nd closed beta is coming anytime now, and they are giving aaway keys. Its not exactly like Aion, but its the closest thing I know of

if $15 a month, or $3.50 a week is too much to pay to play....you have bigger issues.
A pack a smokes is well over $5, beer is like 10 a 6-pack....MMOs are a deal at the prices they charge.
Dax.

10$ for a six pack of beer? Wow! Are they gold-plated cans?
This is a sequence of characters intended to produce some profound mental effect, but it has failed.

Actually he's right but I'm thinking that he drinks what I drink.

FREEREALM
Terrible game. I was in and out of the beta in about 1 hr. It was one of those shitty can't play because of the amount of lag games. That and they had the type of loot system that I hate, where shit drops and anyone can pick it up. Fucking hate that.
Veritas Vos Liberabit- The truth will set you free.
mm this one is a p2p but the cheapest in price ,it lordofthering mine of moria
Lets not discount the fact that the game has an upfront fee of 70 bucks as well.
But seriosuly if aion being p2p is enough to stop you from playing it then that is your loss.

I did the beta for Aion too, and was disapointed with how it is geared towards PVP. But I'm playing free MMO's right now because I got laid off. Right now I'm trying "Runes of Magic". The first expansion for it comes out tomorrow. Plus there is "The Chronicles of Spellborn" and "Requiem" which I beta tested and seem pretty nice for free MMO's.
Well Im just waiting for my pr-order to come through for AION.
Well most games are grind in one way or another, you could try Sword Of The New World F2P, and is alot different
to others out there, some people dont like it , but I stuck with it, and just like the Barrock era its set in along with some nice graphics.
The other game I have been playing which is made by Perfect World is Jade Dynasty, which is a grind fest, but hey its even got an auto bot system you can leave on as long as you want, and the graphics are very good.
Its taken from the Korean game Celestial Destroyer, it's the same game.
Could try those.
Guildwars? it isn't free to get but have no monthly fees. It is actually a great game, second best selling western MMO ever.
Otherwise you should have a look on Runes of magic, it is the closest F2P you can find.
lol how about eternal world, the Chinese browser based clone of Aion

My favorite F2P game is Sword of the New World. Second favorite is DDO I guess.
Yeah, but your character is so freakin' weak compare to hard and ultimate mode characters it's ridiculous and unless they've changed it you have to level a normal mode toon to lvl 40 before you can even make a hard mode one. It isn't a terrible game and the art style is similar but I don't know...
I think Runes of Magic and Chronicles of Spellborn are both better choices. I would even recommend Dungeons & Dragons Online now that it's f2p if you're into something a bit different.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
Easy choise these days:
FTP is AD&D on line.
And it shows : it is already played more than Lotro (and even more than Aion Beta and CO). If you like free dungeon crawlers, its relaunch is a huge successand no monthly subs.
Everyone should play it as a freebie.
I really do not understand peoples aversion of pay to play games. I got a friend that absolutely refuses to ever pay a monthly fee to play a game and I simply can not understand that concept. MMO's are a form of entertainment just like cable tv, going to the movies, going to an amusement park, and the list goes on and on. I mean, the only way I can understand this is if say, your out of work, but then that would raise other questions of priorities that I wont get into.
Pay to play games are an excellent return on your investment if you simply play just a few hours a week. The way I have always looked at it is this way. Before I played MMO's, I was buying tons of games. 20-50 bucks a pop and beat them within a month and out to buy the next one. MMO's are not made (typically) to be beaten that quick thus you get much more bang for your buck. Heck, when EQ1 came out, I didnt buy a single other video game for almost 2 years. Think of the savings!
One of my favorite comments from people that dont like pay to play games is that they feel they must play to get their monies worth. Well, thats an illusion. If you only play once a week and had fun, then why worry about having to play more! That was 4 times in a month that you got to sit down and enjoy yourself, If you went to the movies 4 times in a month it would be WAY more than playing that MMO. Not only are MMO's entertainment, they could also be classified as a hobby in many ways and we all know that hobbies are usually way more expensive than 15 bucks a month.
I do see your point. And honestly, I agree with you. I don't mind supporting good games with some money, but why pay for something you can get free? I've played Guild Wars since release, but they haven't come out with anything new since EotN, and having beaten all campaigns with several professions, it gets old. Even so, it's a good game, so I've bought a few things through the in game store. Same with Perfect World. It's a good game, and when I had the money, I bought some Zen to support them.
All the same, there are other things I'd prefer to spend my money on. Going to the movies with the wife, for instance. Putting money into savings so we can try and get ahead in life and look at starting our family.
Point is, yea, I like Aion, but I don't like to HAVE to pay to play a game beyond buying the initial box in the store. If it's good and I have the spare cash, sure I'll spend some extra and support the game.

You're talking craft beers, and not many people drink those while watching the game or when having friends over.
And if they do, then they're not the type that would worry about $15/month on an mmo.
Soul Of The Ultimate Nation
NA, canada, mexico, UK www.ijji.com in open beta
rest of the world www.webzen.com closed beta starts at 8. oct.
Aion is not geared towards pvp, what the hell are you talking about? The game is pvpve, its focus is both aspects of the game unlike most common MMOs which do on OR the other.
WIsh people would research before spreading misinformation.
