Okay, I have to confess - I have been waiting a damn long time for an mmo where I had this much fun. And this game hit me like a golf club to the back of my head because I'd never even really heard of it until after just wasting $55 on Darkfall. I was hoping that Darkfall would live up to even 1/10th of its hype, and was very disappointed.
Don't get me wrong. I love PvP. I miss the old days of old-school UO. And Darktide of the Asherons call game. And the all PvP Andred and Mordred servers that originally were found on the great Dark Age of Camelot. But Darkfall is completely barren of content. The mob AI is pathetic. The world is empty. I am imaginative, but I got to have some kinda content besides a bunch of knuckleshead players all running around trying to fight each other or a handful of mobs. Darkfall was another big let down in a long list of mmo games I've tried over the years.
Until last week when I finally took a look at Requiem: Bloodymare.
I typically don't like free to play or micro-payment games, and I also have grown to hate all of the Asian/Korean mmo games I have ever installed. I typically usually prefer the more fantasy-themed games as opposed to the sci-fi themed mmo games.
Then there is this new game to the USA as of last summer (2008) called "Requiem".
It takes the best of WoW, the best of newer games like Warhammer Online, and also allows a freedom PvP server where you can kill and attack any player with consequences of not being able to group with others and talk to most npcs making life rather difficult. It has features like mailboxes, live auctions to sell/buy goods, and personal mounts for faster travel. The crafting system is actually very reqarding and fun and doesn't require grinding crafting skills for a billion hours. And best of all, it is totally free to play. Sure, you can pay them money for added benefits, but the game is insanelty fun just with the totally free, basic account.
The game features another thing that is extremely satisfying - Graphic violence. Heads being cut off, arms and limbs flying, blood splattering everywhere, and even bodys being cut in half! Each type of monster actually has different ways that it gets hacked apart. For this feature, and the fact that they allow players to curse to their hearts content in the game instantly gives this game an Mature-17 game rating. Not that mature rated games are uncommon, but this game is actually a quality and very entertaining game with oodles of content.
Trust me, I could go on and on and on about all the reasons I love this game. But let the game speak for itself...
Check it out yourself at www.playrequiem.com
It's easily worth the free trial in by FAR the best free to play mmo I've ever installed out of at least 50 of the suckers over the past five or six years.
Enjoy!!

Requiem is a quality game, and definitely one of the best F2P games. However, it's not nearly the best MMORPG since DAoC. That's some incredible hyperbole I hope, or you just haven't played anything since DaoC
Exactly. That's why I refrained from going on and on and on about all the reasons that I love this game. I just left the link in my post for people to check it out if they desire and to judge the game for itself.
Nothing monetary to lose to try the game as it is totally free to play.
To me, this game is a breath of fresh air in a very stale mmo market and I am enjoying the hell out of it.

Not sure what you mean by "exactly", because I definitely don't agree with the idea requiem is the best F2P. It is one of the better ones, and it would probably be in my top 5 or very near the top 5. The game is just too grindy and suffers from the "grind till you're blind" disease most asian MMOs do after level 30 or so.
I've had more fun in this free game than in previous games which cost me money. But yeah... it's very grindtastic.
It's a blast until you reach later levels. Then it becomes a major grindfest.
Requiem is very good.
What I don't understand is if you passed level 30 why havent you started paying for the game yet?
People complain about the grind? maybe thats due to not having 50% xp and subing to this really good game?
Seriously, If your going to be a cheap bastard and not shell out atleast a sub to the game dont complain about the grind.
Seriously the F2p MMO crowd is messed up, Games like Requiem, RoM and Atlantica are just as good as other themepark P2p the problem is you have to Pay from them to be as good!!!
Spend 5,10,15 bucks a month on these games and they stop being grindy and limited.
Oh and dont give me that "But, It's F2p!!!!" because nothing is free im sorry.

Id say Atlantica is better and more finished than certain AAA titles weve seen out in the last year..lol.
Is requiem a cash shop grinder or something? If you waste weeks getting to level 50 you wont suddenly have to shell out £30 a month on scrolls/potions/mounts and whatnot?

In requiem if you dont pay you get less XP/cash per kill and less bank space.
Everything else can be gotten in game, the best armor from pvp/raids, mounts and bags all gotten from free play.
Edit: actually as a Req player myself (casual) i must say i like how long it takes to level in the game as a free player. Kinda feels like an oldschool mmo.

I've been playing a couple of weeks and paid 7 bucks (8 bucks on the checkout screen....thx to taxes I guess) to access global chat, better loot drops, more xp per kill.
I like the game so far but always have the feeling its like a bastard step child as if the developers have no desire to see it grow. I'm afraid the game is what it is and will never be different. I want to see new zones, dungeons, classes, mobs, weapons, armor, etc. Requiem has alot of potential but I wonder if we'll ever see an expansion or significant new content.
If any devs read this PLEASE do something about the lame planes we use to travel between destinations. Planes seem so out of place in a horror mmorpg. Rusty planes? nah, lets see zombie bats, dragons or something monstrous. Something undead and scary which imo is more appropriate.
Well its been out in NA for what, a year now? Not even, think it will be a year this fall, and they already added a new race (plus its classes). Plus additional PVE and PVP content.
I just started up again and i'm really impressed by how much work the devs continue to put in this game.
I never experienced the grind until I was level 65. There are also other ways to level. I gain about 600k exp per SvS.
I think it is true Requiem is treated like the bastard step child. Requiem does have less developers on staff, and it updates half as often as its other counterparts with Gravity. Its theme is definetly different then anything coming out of Gravity. One gripe I do have is how Gravity is managed. Its based on making maximum revenue for its shareholders rather then making a quality game. You can see this with a limited assumption of how you should spend on game development and how they dedicate staff.
The company itself has 500 developers working on 6 MMOs, and atleast 3 mobile games at a time. They are also one of the most profitable mmo exclusive companies in the world. With that much development they should have much more developers. They also poorly use their development studios. Its pretty well-known Korea doesn't have the best programmers. So I wonder why they don't use their US studio as a programming house and the Korean studio for art. Utilizing the best of both regions. I wish they would use their US studio to program for Requiem. They definetly hired the right kind of programmers to make a nice and varied gameplay experience.
I played it some in beta and liked it. When it came to the 'real' game, it's totally unplayable. I've now downloaded it three times and every time I download it and get into the game world, I get terrible lag which makes the game unplayable. I'd like to play it and had fun when I did the beta. I just wish I could play it now.
Good game, better than alot of p2p games out there, but I wouldn't say its as good as Daoc
awesome game imo. It compares to Age of Conan which is a P2P , which is also saying alot.
The world is gritty and dark, and the combat is slowed down to create a psuedo realistic experience. The ambience is great, and the character progression is pretty deep for a F2P...
If you are looking for a gritty game world like AoC thats free, look no further...
It's pretty fun. Get's Boring after a while, though.
I thought it was like all the other games I have played out there. Nothing special, just the blood.
We've seen this before, people playing a game (any game) for a week and declaring its the next great thing.
Comparing Requiem to a classic such as DAOC borders on almost blasphomy, its a decent game, but in the end its a typical grinder. Decent theme mind you, and some great twists, but it doesn't have anything to rival the pvp experience that DAOC provided.
Well, we'll give the OP about 6 months, then see if his review is the same.

The OP started this thread a few months ago; and others who participated in this thread I still see pretty actively on the Bloodymare forums. Might get that answer sooner. I've been playing it off and on for over a year; I originally left it to go play WAR. Let's just say I have a WAR time card collecting dust on my desk, and Requiem is still on my hard drive getting played.
I'm not going to blow sunshine up anyone's backside to say this game is awesome. But, it does click right for a lot of us. The gameplay can be fun, the layout of the world and the atmosphere definitely caters to a different crowd. It has plenty of faults, my biggest being the occasional font hiccup and the word-wrapping in mid word. Aside from that, it's been one of my favorite games to quest in, and the dungeons can be pretty cool. What it lacks in content for most it makes up for in community; the Self-Entitlement kiddies looking for something to (unrealisitically) find something in the F2P that shines like WoW or any other AAA premium title have apparently tapered off, and the people who are just looking for something different and get into the groove of the game stuck around. I think I've only ran into one total asshat in the past month *knocks on wood* and that was just someone who got upset I didn't just stand there and smash keys in a duel. But that's any game
Its a good game, worth the DL and to me worth the sub cost. I have played AAA games that just dont stack up to it then again its not hte best thing since sliced bread but hay the price point is right and the game is fun what more can a gamer wont out of life?
I guess Ill give a it a try, Ive always been a fan of horror/blood&gore. Might be a good break from DDO and RF Online
