Is this game as carebear as WOW?
I remember liking the graphics in world of warcraft but the game was just sooo damn peaceful and there was no risk in PVP combat. It was just zerg, zerg, zerg and earn points like pacman.
Does Aion have any risk in the PVP?
Is there maybe a hardcore server with full looting for advanced players?

If by advanced you mean global trolls than F***... I hope so.
Yeah theres penalty... you die you lose experience... you die more you lose more and more and more experience. If you die in the upper levels of pvp you lose pvp experience... I presume bad players will have a hard time hitting max level and advancing in PvP tiers.

There are no risk in PvP . Items never break and/or need to be repaired. Only bragging rights that you are the best in PvP
Played Aoc/DDO/FFXI/WAR / LoTRo / CO / Aion
Playing Rift
Waiting for FFXIV to be the game it should. so sad =(
The biggest risk you face playing any video game are siezures and obesity!
People will just zerg from a bindspot then.
Just run mindlessly into combat and die, am I right?

Dieing in pvp don't mean you're a bad player, I just found out the abyss is same area for levels 25-50 so if you go there at 25 you will get one-shotted by all. So being good or not has nothing to do with it.
You lose abyss points - Aion's point accumulation system for PVP kills - when you die in PVP.
When you die in PVE, you lose exp, and there's no happy run back to your corpse, picking up where you left off (can be quite harsh, particularly in outdoor elite areas). Furthermore, some (not all) of the exp can be regained for a price that will scale with the amount lost (higher level, more exp lost, higher price). Amongst the other ways this game 'nickel n dimes' its players, it should be a rather consistent concern. Granted, as any game progresses, the economy will do what it does, and these prices will be less relevant, but for new players it should always reinforce a serious loss on death, and therefore a fear of it.
Frankly I like the way the game has ways to constantly siphon from its economy. It'll at least slow inflation down more than I've seen in other games.
Edit: Adding that abyss points determine your PVP rank, and the points can be spent on some gear, at which point you will lose rank, iirc. Anything I'm wrong on, feel free to correct me if someone knows better.

So the game is heavily instanced/zoned?
Aion is like racing for pinks dude. Everytime you lose a fight you have to give the winner your entire account and start over! Risk enough for you?

Nah man I'm dead serious. I come from games like Ultima Online (back in the day), Asherons call darktide, Shadowbane, Darkfall.
I'm just worried if I try this game it will be a heavily zoned/instanced nightmare of carebearness.
He is a troll. If he wants answers to these simple questions he can go look it up . It's very easy to find, even for a troll.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
explain what you mean by 'highly zoned' since thats not the same as 'heavily instanced'.
heavily instanced for me means most of pvp happens in closed areas like battlegrounds (wow) or arenas (wow/guildwars) etc.
heavily zoned tho... what does that mean? if a part of the map is named then its obviously a zone.
how do you imagine a world (whether real or virtual) without zones?
if you mean lots of 'loads' between zones etc then i guess you should have just said 'heavily instanced' and everything would be clear.
about the risks.... hmmm there will never be extreme risks in any game. permadeath would mean extreme frustration from players and they wouldnt stay for too long thus developers would never get enough money.

I also came from Ultima Online and Darkfall and where I have a preference for sandboxes I lack the desire to partake in the "Darkfall" community filled with elitist, whiners, and undercover carebears. I recall UO having a good community. After I maxed my bank with player loot in Darkfall I quit, the game is severely unbalanced and pvp felt linear... everyone had the same specs Archery,Fire & earth magic. The sprinting in fullspeed circles to melee was one of the lamest mechanics I have ever experienced. All and all though I had a lot of fun but I want more from the games I pay for. I prefer to have both PvP and PvE and the PvE ... if it can even be called that was horrible.
So if you go into AION a lvl based game expecting a sand box you wont be happy. If you go into AION expecting AION, RvR, group based, class oriented pvp with a built in targeting system then you might be enjoy your stay a bit more.

I have seen the above info elsewhere as well, I have yet to see much in the way of PvP and honistly we wont know untill we see how the community developes around Aion but I am hoping for what we saw in DAoC and that is possible from what I have read of the mechanics.
Some middle-ground would be nice. I agree, permadeath could get irritating. I am on the other end of the spectrum in thinking though. To me, the death penalties of most every game are so slight that it really is meaningless to die.
Meaningful pvp and death with consequences makes for a much more exhilarating experience.
How many mmo's have breaking items? Not alot. Also, you sound like someone trying to do a book report after reader the cover, "100% uninformed"
You lose EXP, which becomes a larger ammount each level. From 10-20 you may half to spend 1/10th your usual earnings from creatures/quests to buy back your exp. Around 40-50, you may spend 7 to 8-10th your regular earnings on exp recovery. It's a huge drain. PVE wise.
Getting into PVP. When you die, there is no guarentee you will rez ANYWHERE near the battle, unlike the convenient graveyards in WoW E-game BG's. So it's not "Die" run back" die run back", its "Die", spend a good portion of the battle coming back. This works because in aion, if you play well, the "Survivability" is much higher than in games like WoW. Also, you lose a good ammount of abyss points that are needed to buy good armor and advance you in abyss rank.
Lastly and most importantly, in the high ranks, if you are serious about your rank. THE BIG ONE. Your K/D ratio matters for your rank... If you do not have an amazingly good KD ratio you can forget about becoming one of the higher ranked players.
All of these combined will have people players much, MUCH more cautiously than WoW. If you play Aion like you do WoW, that says you don't care about PVP armor or ranks, and that basically equates to you not caring about the primary purpose of the game in general. Anyone playing to better their character in this game will end up learning the importance of this penalties, or risk just failing in general.
Now some people say abyss points don't matter because you can rank up by farming NPC's. Well, basically. They are right. For the first ranks you get it doesn't matter. But once you start getting into the higher ranks, the K/D will hold you back, and unless you bridge a good cap in your K/D ratio, you won't be going anwhere any time soon. You could be a very high rank soley on NPC's, but say at that point your K/D is 0/0. Getting ganked "1" time could drop you 15 days in rank worth of NPC killing. "That's the penalty for avoiding PVP to rank up".
Overall aion has much more risk than WoW. It's a perfect split balance between the hardcore crowd and the casual one. It doesn't cater to either exclusively, but it doesn't throw either one out of the door either. What you may be is what is considered an "Ultra-hardcore", the only thing out of the question for you is perma-dead, or maybe not even that. So my advice for you is that you go play Ultima, DF, EVE, or wait for Mortal. They are your bread and butter. Not aion.

You like EXP, which gets bigger and bigger each level. And each level it gets "More expensive" to the point where the divide between how much you make regularly and how much you lose when you want to recover it gets rediculous. Well said bro,, placing penalties for dying leads to better, more well rounded players.
Im sick of playing MMO's at lvl 50 + with some kid in the group who could care less weather or not we all die.

Do you guys think they'll have a system where they reset your K/d?? Cuz what if u suck at pvp at the beggining and die a lot so u have a terrible k/d then even if u get better u won't really be able to get a high rank cuz ur kd will be weighing you down

Coming from Age of Conar the Prepertarion I can tell you it's not just kids... it's all ages. More or less a personality or mind set that doesnt care if you wipe or not.

Let's look at it like this, say your KD is 1/50 at the beginning, you basically think you are screwed right? Wrong. Since this game is team based, alot of "Your skill", only shines when grouped with "Other players". So roll with some good players, and your KD will jump up to 100/78. Realistically your deaths jumped a bit because you will still die a few times playing with these guys.
But when you keep getting more kills and it might jump to 150/90? Then forward to 500/200? See, the deaths don't matter AT ALL. In reality, it's the K/D "Spread". The gap between the ammount of kills and deaths you have. As long as you can bridge that by as much as possible, you always have a chance at getting back up there.
See when you stared with 1/50, your spread was -.49. When you caught back up and created the spread, it ended at +.300 That is a huge increase, and it can be done relatively easily if you play tactically with friends.
Go look up the ranking system it tells you everything. If you are level 10, happen to get a kill on a level 35 by chance with a certain PvP rank you can get a shit load of points and vice versa also lose if you are the 35 level killed by a 10. It's sort of confusing so you need to look at the table to get an idea. I don't believe you lose char XP, just abyss points which can buy abilities and gear and what not. It's a little more in depth on how it works.

Its much like we see with FPS game rankings, still not sure how I feel about it, I do like the idea dont get me wrong and will be workign my way up that ladder but I want to see a way for the less leet yet dedicated player to reach rank i.e. a life rank to parallel the Abyss rank or what ever you want to call it, I would hope the rewards are diffrent or some how unique yet balanced and non stacking. My general idea is that the less than perfect player may never hold the top most rank but can get comprable equipment or reward for there dedication rewarding both skill and dedication. Either way i will play but its a thought.
